Tips for Planning a Memorable Anniversary Trip to Montreal or Toronto

Question:

My husband and I are were suppose to be going away next May over seas for our 10 year wedding anniversary. Our plan was to just see what we could get a good deal on as there are many places we want to see. However, with covid, we are presuming we may be staying in Canada. I was thinking of doing Montreal or Toronto. Any tips when trying to plan out either of these trips? We are also thinking of booking in March or April so we have a better idea of how everything will be travel wise.

Montreal for sure!! In general there's just a lot more touristy things to do in Montreal. If you are interested in going further, Quebec city is stunning as well

Quebec City is amazing too!

Linda I second this! I lived there for awhile because I fell in love with it. Take the train up and stay two nights. Do Montreal over Toronto for sure.

You sure you want to plan any travelling when COVID-19 wave #2 might be just around the corner? The 2nd lockdown might be longer and even more strict than the 1st. The trip expenses might not be refundable.

I would highly suggest visiting Ottawa. There's so many interesting museums there. If you feel comfortable, you could fly into Ottawa and take the train to Toronto and then fly home from Toronto. Toronto is a vibrant city with lots of things to see and do too.

Depends how long of a trip you are taking, but if you haven’t been to MTL, that’s where I would go. Toronto is nice too, but I feel like you need to know a bit more about it to trully enjoy it. MTL is a bit more tourist friendly and you are closer to other places.
Quebec City is 3 hours east and Ottawa is 2 hours west so you’re in the middle. You can easily hop on a train or a bus, if you don’t rent a car.
Remember that March and April is still cold and most likely you’ll be dealing with snow. There are so many things to visit and see, it’ll really depend on what you are into: museum, churches, nightlife, restaurant, etc.

Yannick They said booking in March or April. I would go in June or September... if not really late May but it could snow haha. Summer can be great but also muggy and miserable or pour rain.

Lara Cool! Yeah, June or September are awesome in that area. There are so many festivals, neighbourhood walks, and outdoor activities you can do at that time of the year!
Also, early October can be super nice and romantic. The fall colours are amazing, if you’ve never seen that before. There’s less of that bustling feeling of the summer, but there’s still plenty to do. It’s a bit cooler, so you won’t have that muggy feeling while usually not freezing yet. It’s usually cool enough that you can go to the spa baths (highly recommend that), but warm enough you can go outside for a beautiful evening walks.
Plane ticket are cheaper after September long weekend or before mid-June, if that’s something to consider.

Yannick I love October too for hiking and more there too. I’d go back late Sept / early Oct if I had the choice. Soon! I somehow never made it to the spa baths
I also recommend a road trip to Tadoussac if you’re feeling adventurous... or Charlevoix area for the day!

Tadoussac or Île de La Madeleines are very pretty... little harder logistically tho. It really depend on time and finances.
I introduced my wife to the spa baths when we first started dating, and she quickly became an addict. It’s one of the first thing we lookup when we travel anywhere now!
We’ve been to a few around BC/Washington State (Harrison, Parksville, Seattle, Whistler), but you can’t compare them. There’s a great one near Ottawa and two great one downtown MTL, in the Old Port area. You can then walk along the Canal Lachine and go to the Atwater Market for a bite, then walk through Griffintown. Or go the other way and walk through the Old Port. Or you can walk north and go to this amazing Chinese Noodle house for lunch and then walk along St Catherine for some shopping and a walk through the Village.
Let me know if you want me to plan your trip for you

Yannick I lived in Quebec City, Alma, Chicoutimi for almost five years

Lara Great areas! I lived in MTL for 14 years and Ottawa for 10. I didn’t spend enough time in Quebec City tho, just a few days here and there.
