Amy interesting cos I checked amazon and it’s selling the SIM card here in Canada but it’s $39. So I should just buy when in Mexico instead then?
Crystal
Amy wow this is amazing. Why are our cell providers SO EXPENSIVE in Canada?!
Alba
I always buy SIMs abroad. Always MUCH cheaper than roaming charges. Canadian cell phone companies are crooks! Bought in Vietnam, UK, France, Spain ... always cheaper.
I'm in France right now. A month of unlimited phone calls, 1000 texts, 4G of data cost me €20 plus €10 for the SIM (€20 to add any future months.)
€20 = CAD$29.36 for a month. Less than $1/day.
FIDO wants to charge me CAD$10/day roaming fees.
No thanks.
Do the math. Even if I were only here for FIVE DAYS, Fido would charge me $50 plus taxes
Still cheaper to buy a SIM and a month of coverage.
Works anywhere in Europe for data too.
Jess
If you have a “e-sim” compatible phone, I would recommend trying out airalo! I am currently using it for data during my trip around Asia and its easy to use. As it is a “e-sim” (not a physical simcard) I can still have my primary simcard in so family/friends can call/text me directly on my usual number.
Khalid
Jess way more expensive than a local SIM card, I paid 20 euro for 60g data in Europe last month
Khalid
It is valid all over Europe, my cousin that live in Paris found it, Europe has a lot of very cheap service
Jess
Khalid where can you buy)
Khalid
I look into Esim not has easy has a local sim or has cheap
Khalid
Most traveller carry a second phone specificity for travel
Khalid
Esim can’t beat that

Sim card is always worth it. I had to make 2 calls less than a minute each before I got mine and was charged about $50 in roaming and fees.

AMAZON has some options and they're really cheap! https://www.amazon.ca/Telcel.../dp/B010L0X3UW/ref=sr_1_3...

Telcell. Was in Cancun last spring. $10us. For 2G for 2 weeks. Went into an actual telcel. 7/11 was more expensive. That is for data only. Then used whatsapp for calls. Also downloaded on google maps the area we would be in so it would work without using data.
Also that was purchasing a SIM card for my iPhone and swapping it out.

I'm in Mazatlan right now. I buy a telcel SIM card as soon as I cross the border. It's about 10 CAD. This trip I put 500 peos (maybe 35 CAD) into a 33 day planwith unlimited text and calls in north america plus 12gb of data. I'll be getting the same plan each month until we go home.
Michelle
Mike good to know, thanks!
Michelle
Mike it just occurred to me.. Canadians don’t need visas for Mexico, right??
Jay
I’ve had luck with telcel. You can’t really go wrong getting a SIM card everywhere in the world is cheaper than Canadian rates. Watch the fine print there are put falls in the deals offered.
Sharon
We recently were down for 4 weeks. Got the telcel "Amigo sin limite" plan down there. Got the one for 33 days and it included 4 GB of data and free calling to Mexico, US and Canada. Paid 350 pesos which included the SIM card. That's $24.50 Canadian. For shorter times and less data, the cost is a lot less. It worked well. We got it set up at an English speaking shop. They tested it and all worked well. We had over 1 GB left in the end . Some resorts charge that much for 2 days of wifi. Make sure you phone is unlocked. Get them to show you how to see how much data is left.
Michelle
Sharon Carrell JohnDittrich Thanks!
Sharon
I also used my telcel data for banking. Was told it was secure and so far no issues. Resort WIFI is most often insecure.

Affordable Data Options for Traveling in Mexico: A Guide to Mexico SIM Cards
Greetings, fellow travelers! If you're planning a trip to Mexico and are concerned about the high cost of data roaming, you're not alone. Fortunately, there's a simple solution – purchasing a local SIM card in Mexico. In this blog post, we'll explore some recommended providers and give you an idea of the typical costs involved.
Why Get a Mexico SIM Card?
Roaming charges for data usage can quickly add up, leaving you with an unexpectedly hefty bill after your trip. By purchasing a local SIM card, you can enjoy reliable and affordable data connectivity during your stay in Mexico. This allows you to stay connected with loved ones, access maps and travel information, and even stream content without worrying about exorbitant roaming fees.
Recommended SIM Card Providers in Mexico
1. Telcel
Telcel is one of the largest and most popular mobile network providers in Mexico. They offer various prepaid plans with varying data allowances and validity periods. Some popular options include:
- $150 MXN (approximately $7.50 USD) for 1GB of data, valid for 7 days
- $300 MXN (approximately $15 USD) for 2GB of data, valid for 30 days
- $500 MXN (approximately $25 USD) for 5GB of data, valid for 30 days
2. AT&T
If you're already an AT&T customer in the US, you may find it convenient to use their Mexico roaming plans. However, be aware that these plans can be more expensive than purchasing a local SIM card. Their current offerings include:
- $60 USD for 1GB of data, valid for 14 days
- $120 USD for 3GB of data, valid for 30 days
3. Unefon
Unefon is a smaller but affordable provider that offers prepaid SIM cards with competitive data packages. Some of their plans include:
- $100 MXN (approximately $5 USD) for 1GB of data, valid for 7 days
- $200 MXN (approximately $10 USD) for 2GB of data, valid for 30 days
Tips for Purchasing and Using a Mexico SIM Card
- Purchase your SIM card at the airport or from official provider stores upon arrival in Mexico.
- Make sure your phone is unlocked and compatible with the Mexican networks.
- Keep your passport or identification handy, as it may be required for registration.
- Top up your SIM card balance as needed to renew or purchase additional data packages.
Remember, while these are general cost estimates, prices and offerings may vary depending on the provider, location, and time of purchase. It's always a good idea to research and compare options before making your decision.
Enjoy your trip to Mexico, and happy (affordable) data surfing!

Hi has anyone purchased a tourism sim card while travelling in Mexico before? Any recommendations on which provider/ est cost? The data roaming cost is high, so thinking of getting a sim card - appreciate any insights, thanks.
