Elizabet I should elaborate too - because of Malaysia's history, food there is Malay, Indonesian, Thai, Chinese and Indian influenced. It's not really like anything you find anywhere else, and there's regional specialties. In Singapore, for instance, you'll see a lot of Hainan chicken rice - immigrants brought it over and Singapore in particular tends to take quite a lot of pride in it.
I'm not going to comment otherwise because I'm most familiar with Penang (they have food that is *very* regional) than anywhere else there, but if you decide to head that way I am happy to give you recs, food or otherwise.

I really liked Chinatown and Arab Street in Singapore. Definitely the Sacred Tooth Temple and Masjid Sultan.

The Indian food in KL is fabulous. We were only there for two days or the better part of, and we went on a city tour the one morning and it was very good

Try Makansutra Gluttons Bay food court. It's at the very heart of Singapore.. the combination of city view and local food is pretty awesome!

The last time i was there was in 76 so i would say anything i found of intrest there would be out dated. If you are into teak made things visit the local markets

Oh and if you stumble upon a Hui Lau Shan location in KL, do stop for a mango dessert. It's a chain from Hong Kong.
There's a shopping mall at the foot of the Petronas Towers if you want some A/C. Most of the stores are western chains, but there's places like Kinokuniya, a bookstore from Japan that also sells some stationary and toys.

My wife just headed back to KL. The China pot in Calgary has good laksa.

If you like seafood you must try their pepper crab and chilli crab. Also their famous Song Fa restaurant soup, it's very peppery. Drink their milk teas. Eat at the food stalls, they're the most authentic and doesnt cost very much in Singapore. Pandan chiffon cake from the airport.
