I have spent most of my time in Mexico City and Ensenada. Mexico City is awesome to me just on the amount of people and amazing street food everywhere. Its very high and close to a lot of mountains plus you can fly to anywhere from there. Plus the city is so big it can take an hr plus to cross it.
Ensenada is more of a small coastal city/town. Great for seafood and wineries near there (Valle de Guadalupe). Plus there is the deserts south along the Baja coast down to La Paz.
Tammy
Ryan thanks, a friend of ours also likes Ensenada. We visited Mexico City years ago and will plan on visiting again this time around.

Only other thing I can say is I went to Cozumel for diving which was great. Not really sure much about Cancun or Tulum
Jonah
Thinking the exact same thing, lol

Hubby and I like to snorkel so the Mayan is always a hit - anywhere there, really.
Tammy
Coleen yes we love to snorkel too!

Six Months in Mexico: A Dream Itinerary Starting October 2021
So you're dreaming of six glorious months exploring Mexico, starting in October 2021? Fantastic choice! Mexico offers an incredible diversity of experiences, from ancient ruins and vibrant cities to stunning beaches and delicious cuisine. Six months gives you ample time to delve deep into this fascinating country. Here's a potential itinerary featuring some of my favorite places, keeping in mind the October start date:
Month 1 & 2: Yucatán Peninsula (October & November)
October and November are ideal for exploring the Yucatán Peninsula as the weather is transitioning from the wet to dry season. The humidity lessens, and the crowds are smaller than the peak winter months.
- Mérida: Immerse yourself in the colonial charm, explore vibrant markets, and enjoy the city's rich Mayan heritage.
- Valladolid: A smaller, more laid-back colonial town, perfect for experiencing authentic Yucatecan culture. Visit the nearby Convent of San Bernardino de Siena.
- Chichén Itzá: Witness the grandeur of this iconic Mayan city. Arrive early to beat the crowds and the heat.
- Uxmal: Another stunning Mayan archaeological site, known for its intricate stone carvings and unique architectural style.
- Rio Lagartos: Take a boat trip through the mangroves and see thousands of flamingos in their natural habitat. (Best time is November-February).
- Tulum: Explore the cliffside Mayan ruins and relax on the beautiful beaches.
- Playa del Carmen & Cozumel: Enjoy the Caribbean vibes, excellent diving and snorkeling opportunities, and bustling nightlife.
Month 3: Chiapas (December)
December offers pleasant weather in Chiapas, perfect for exploring the rainforest and indigenous communities.
- San Cristóbal de las Casas: Immerse yourself in the colorful indigenous culture, explore the charming streets, and visit the nearby villages.
- Palenque: Discover this impressive Mayan city nestled in the jungle, known for its well-preserved temples and intricate carvings.
- Agua Azul & Misol-Ha Waterfalls: Marvel at the stunning turquoise waterfalls and swim in the refreshing pools.
- Cañón del Sumidero: Take a boat trip through this breathtaking canyon, home to diverse wildlife.
Month 4: Oaxaca (January)
January is a great time to experience Oaxaca's unique culture, delicious cuisine, and vibrant festivals.
- Oaxaca City: Explore the historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, sample Oaxacan mole, and visit the vibrant markets.
- Monte Albán: Explore the ruins of this ancient Zapotec city, perched high on a mountaintop with stunning views.
- Hierve el Agua: Witness the petrified waterfalls and enjoy the panoramic views.
- Puerto Escondido: Relax on the beaches, learn to surf, and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere.
Month 5: Mexico City & Surroundings (February)
February offers pleasant weather for exploring the bustling capital and surrounding areas.
- Mexico City: Immerse yourself in the city's rich history, vibrant art scene, and delicious cuisine. Visit the Zócalo, the Palacio de Bellas Artes, and the Anthropology Museum.
- Teotihuacan: Explore the impressive pyramids of the Sun and Moon at this ancient city.
- Puebla: Visit the charming colonial city, known for its beautiful architecture and Talavera pottery.
Month 6: Guanajuato & San Miguel de Allende (March)
March is an excellent time to visit the colorful colonial cities of Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende with comfortable weather.
- Guanajuato: Explore the colorful alleyways, tunnels, and historic buildings of this UNESCO World Heritage city.
- San Miguel de Allende: Enjoy the charming atmosphere, beautiful architecture, and thriving art scene.
This itinerary is just a suggestion, feel free to adapt it to your interests and budget. Remember to book accommodations and transportation in advance, especially if traveling during peak season. Enjoy your incredible six-month adventure in Mexico!
