What is the best vehicle for touring Ireland as 4 adults?

Hi!we are 4 adults who want to rent an automatic midsize car to tour Ireland. We need recommendations for which car rental to go with, should we take AC? What vehicle would be best? We are seeing things like an inclusive rate with deductible and then inclusive rate with "refundable deductible" what's the difference?
Does our car insurance cover anything for this car rental?
Any other information we should be aware before starting such a road trip? We would appreciate any advice, information fellow travellers would be good enough to share!

Rent from an established company (Rent a Car, Budget, Avis, etc). Make sure you get all the coverage you can (worth the money). If you get into some accident or someone hits you, take pictures of the person, license plate, the damage and call the cops right on the spot. I learned the hard way in Italy. $1000 outta my pocket and it wasn't even my fault. Depending on time of year, get AC. Rent from the airport (easist).

Usually auto insurance from here does not cover in Europe. I don't know about the credit card company covering haven't done that. Rent an automatic is definitely easier but more expensive. They do have some very good highways depending on where you're traveling. It's the off Country Roads that are tricky and narrow. If you don't mind driving on the other side of the road in a standard it is a lot less money, but way harder.

VISA Infiniti have your car coverage but you have to difer rental company insurance. All rentals today have AC . Only slight higher charges for automatic transmision.

I don't recommend renting from Avis or budget they are the worst I've ever dealt with. I also suggest taking pictures before you take your vehicle and when you bring it back. It's the best way to hopefully avoid any issues

You need a letter from your credit card company proving insurance--or they'll get you big time at the agency. Only in Ireland man, the worst.

Stick with the bigger companies. Also. Get the smallest car you can manage as the roads are much narrower than in Canada

Your credit card and auto insurance (if you have collision) will cover you. Get a statement from insurance company. You probably won't have to worry about automatic or AC they probably are normal. Car rental companies are mostly same as here enterprise , hertz, check out Sixt they are good.

We did 4 weeks last year in Ireland. Check with your credit card company to see if you are covered there and take a copy of their policy if you are. We rented through AvIs on the Costco.ca site I believe. It was very reasonable and no extra charges in the end. We did not have AC, were there in August, very few roads that you can drive super fast on so we just had the windows down.

Renting a Car for a Road Trip in Ireland: Everything You Need to Know

Planning a road trip in Ireland with friends is an exciting adventure, but there are a few important considerations to keep in mind when renting a car. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you make an informed decision.

Car Rental Company Recommendations

Some of the reputable car rental companies in Ireland include:

  • Hertz
  • Avis
  • Budget
  • Enterprise
  • Sixt

It's advisable to compare rates and read reviews before booking with a specific company.

Vehicle Type and Air Conditioning

For a group of four adults touring Ireland, a midsize automatic car would be a comfortable choice. It provides ample space for passengers and luggage while still being relatively easy to maneuver on narrow Irish roads.

As for air conditioning (AC), it's generally recommended to opt for a vehicle with AC, especially if you're traveling during the summer months. While the Irish climate is relatively mild, having AC can make your journey more comfortable, especially on warm days.

Insurance and Deductibles

Most car rental companies offer two types of rates: an inclusive rate with a deductible and an inclusive rate with a "refundable deductible."

  • Inclusive rate with deductible: This rate includes basic insurance coverage, but you'll be responsible for paying a deductible (an excess amount) if the car is damaged or stolen during your rental period.
  • Inclusive rate with refundable deductible: With this option, you'll pay a higher upfront cost, but if no damage occurs, the deductible amount will be refunded to you after returning the car.

It's important to review the terms and conditions of each option carefully to understand the coverage and potential costs.

Personal Car Insurance Coverage

Whether your personal car insurance covers a rental car depends on your policy. Some insurance providers offer coverage for rental vehicles, while others may require you to purchase additional coverage from the rental company. It's best to contact your insurance provider directly to understand their policies and what coverage, if any, extends to rental cars in Ireland.

Additional Tips for a Smooth Road Trip

  • Familiarize yourself with driving on the left: Driving on the left side of the road can be challenging for those accustomed to driving on the right. Take some time to get comfortable with it before embarking on your journey.
  • Plan your route: Ireland has many narrow, winding roads, so it's essential to plan your route carefully and allow for extra travel time.
  • Consider purchasing a GPS or using a navigation app: Having a reliable navigation system can make your road trip much smoother and help you avoid getting lost.
  • Be prepared for tolls: Some roads in Ireland have tolls, so make sure to carry cash or a credit card to pay for them.
  • Understand the rules and regulations: Familiarize yourself with Ireland's traffic laws, speed limits, and parking regulations to avoid fines or accidents.

By considering these factors and being well-prepared, you and your friends can embark on an unforgettable road trip through the beautiful landscapes of Ireland.
