Has anyone ever bought an international SIM card online? I’m heading to the states and tired of being ripped off by roaming charges.

Drew I have purchased this one as well and was very surprised how easy it was.

Drew only good for 7 days? Virgin Mobile has a data roaming plan for 30 days @$80 Cdn.

Profile picture of Drew

Drew

Klassen there’s lots of date options. My last trip was just a week. I’ve bought month long ones too. Not much more $$$.

I used an ESim for Vegas, and it worked great.

If you have an iPhone use an eSIM, will allow you to keep your Canadian number active. Used this company many times:

Yes many times - I use airalo - here’s my code if you want to save $3 and I earn a referral too. I’ve used it in the US (here now and using it) Mexico, Ireland and Italy! Texting does not work (use whatsapp, signal) and then data works very well. I generally have not paid more than $15 for it at at time as opposed to $15 per day from my Canadian provider. TERESA9479

Teresa when you install a Sim card from another country what’s up will ask you if you want to keep your current number were you aware of this that way anybody you have a whatsapp can call and text for free without it being a problem where you are

If your phone takes esim than you can buy online e.g. from airalo. If you need a regular sim then you can buy through Amazon.

Cheryl

So a couple tips your phone company whoever you’re with will offer you a plan for a month or a year I pay an extra $10 a month to have this plan because I do travel that being said if you put a Sim card in your phone and you have whatsapp, whatsapp Will ask you if you want to keep your current number you say yes so family members and anyone you have a whatsapp can text you back and forth and call you for free. This works for the whole world so far that I have travelled Europe, Mexico, USA, but USA it’s better to have a plan on your phone, some of the plans are not worth it unless you buy the yearly plan to be quite honest I would call your provider and ask what plans they have for your trip time

Profile picture of Bernie

Bernie

Cheryl what provider are you with? Costs me $14/ day for roaming......

Profile picture of Cheryl

Cheryl

Bernie i’m with Bell but I don’t go to the daily plan I go to the monthly one which is $10 a month but the rule of thumb is you can only buy it once a year if you buy it and cancel it that is with Bell now that could’ve changed that was the last time I asked them as a year ago

Profile picture of Bernie

Bernie

Cheryl I don't even have the option of paying monthly.......

Bernie you are the North American plan. Give them a call. Whoever you have an asked.

Profile picture of Wafa

Wafa

Should I set this up just before I leave? I am not traveling till May 27th or can you set it up with a start date? Referral code is good too. Thank you

It depends on the country you're buying the sim for, but for the US the validity period only starts when the sim connects to a supported network (so when you connect to a US network once you arrive). So yes you can install it now and it will only activate when you land for your trip! I found the set up a bit confusing/took some time to figure out so I think it's worth doing before you leave

I bought this on Amazon, I was only going for 5 days to Florida and it worked. It may had an option to add credit. It was cheaper then Fido at $12 a day.
It had to be activated 48 hours in advance of your arrival date so they would have it ready for your arrival date if that makes sense.

Sara

Lee-Ann I’ve never used one of these before but does your number change for those five days?

If your phone supports Esim (virtual sim card), then airalo is the way otherwise, buying a Sim from Amazon is your best bet (just look at the reviews and features)

Depending where you are going, You can buy a SIM card directly from the provider, and then do a pay as you go top up. I did that when i travelled to nashville. With Verizon. I think it was $25usd for a the Sim and $25 for the plan. And you can reuse the SIM anywhere in the USA that has verizon, just top it up with minutes
