Where can I find a cheap, safe beach vacation to escape the Calgary cold?

Question:

This summer in Calgary sucked. I need somewhere hot, to just lay on the beach and read books. What's your cheapest (safe!) recommendation?
I need zero tourism/activities and even mediocre food would suffice, just a hot safe place to lounge quietly for a few days in October or November.

PV MX is my go to for exactly what you’ve described. Start watching for deals on red tag, Itravel2000.ca etc

Cuba. Since you don't care about food.
Mayan Riviera if you do. Have fun!

I absolutely love Cuba and it is relatively cheap in October/November. Cayo Coco is all resorts with beautiful beaches and Varadero is close to town for some culture or sight seeing.

Hi Jenny, check this out. It is in Grenada (the Caribbean island) and the prices include accommodation, meals, airport transfer, and in-house activities: http://mypretendlife.com/.../reclaim-your-connection-to.../

Cuba. Shitty food. Nothing 5 star
. Beautiful sand and beaches. sunwing goes direct

Nov is a better time to do the Caribbean as April-oct are hurricane season (worst is aug-sept) I’m a fan of searching for seat sales/all inclusive packages and just going wherever is cheapest. It’s like vacation roulette

Profile picture of Maria

Maria

Any search tips?

Profile picture of Beverly

Beverly

Maria I usually just go to west jet and see what they have for seat sales. You can also talk to travel agents and see what they have or suggest. Sometimes if you can book short notice there are screaming deals

Cabo. Rent and air bnb or stay in a boutique hotel. Stay in San Jose Del cabo. Not Cabo San Lucas.

CAREFUL - it is hurricane season! I believe from my past research Costa Rica doesn't get them. Otherwise you are throwing the dice regardless of price.

Coleen this is on my mind, yes indeed, and makes me want to avoid Atlantic islands lol

Before becoming hurricanes they are tropical storms and or tropical depressions, and Costa Rica is influenced a lot by this type of weather. October and November are typically the rainiest months in Costa Rica. That doesn't mean there won't be nice weather, but there is a greater chance of rain.

You want cheap, Cuba is your best bet. My last trip there cost me just over $600 for a week long, all inclusive stay at a resort that was only a year old in Cayo Santa Maria. Food was good too, especially the snack bars by the pools!

Janet I’m thinking of traveling alone. Is it safe?

Jenny Lowe I can't remember, I'd have to find it online, it was a couple years ago now

Profile picture of Janet

Oops the previous message was for Carol, sorry.
Jenny I found Cuba to be far safer than Mexico. We rented a car and cruised villages and had no issue

Profile picture of Jean

Cuba is very, very safe. All precautions should still be generally observed as a solo female traveller but Cuba is good.

Janet Cuba isn’t cheap anymore at all

Profile picture of Janet

Janet

Amanda depends on time of year, I just saw week long trips, all in, for like $800 this aft when I was looking for the resort I went to. Still pretty cheap.

Profile picture of Amanda

Amanda

Janet I would be hesitant to stay somewhere that cheap there. I did $900 and the resort was horrible

Profile picture of Teresa

Their idea of 4.5 star is equivalent to a 2 star in Calgary.. .

Profile picture of Janet

Janet

You take your chances, do your research, read reviews. I'm not really all about the fancy resorts though, I'm more about exploring. Like I said tho, my $600 trip was to a newer resort and it was great, even the food.
We went to Costa Rica, I booked us a 2.5-3 star resort and we still had a good time, after all, you're only in your room to sleep and shower. I've stayed in really nice resorts, and not so nice resorts, but have always had a great time. Guess it depends on what one is looking for. If you plan to spend your whole trip at the resort, then yeah, spend more.

If you want to just chill on the beach and be left alone Las Brisas huatulco. They have 3 beaches to chose from and it’s super relaxing, we went there super cheap. Cuba isn’t cheap anymore but Cayo coco is amazing.

Want to come to Costa Rica. I have a great little b and b in the Caribbean side that touts bike culture, surfing and reggae. Great food, beautiful unspoiled beaches for miles, and I have had several Calgarians stay here during a yoga retreat. Check out Facebook page La Paz Del Caribe oe www.lapazdelcaribe.com

Laurie Laurie, is it expensive to go out for dinner, etc in CR? We haven’t been there for 20 years but would love to come back with our son who’s now 17.

Profile picture of Laurie

Laurie

Belle it depends where you eat. Good Caribbean food is 6-7 US . It all depends where you eat. But there are so many good international restaurants here.

Profile picture of Kevin

Kevin

Belle I'm in the Central Valley and you can get a nice dinner for about 10,000. Beer runs about 1,300 and cocktails about 3,000 to 3,500. If you are looking for lunch specials, look for ejecutivos. It's a full plate, (rice beans salad) generally with a choice of chicken or fish and it will run around 3,000 to 3,500 including a naturale.

Profile picture of Belle

Belle

Kevin Hi Kevin! Thanks for the information! What does that work out to roughly in USD or CAD?

Profile picture of Kevin

Kevin

Belle Currently the $ CAN is trading in the neighbourhood of 430 to the CR colone. It all depends on if you are converting money and what rate you get or if you are simply using a credit card and what your c.c. provider is charging you for foreign transaction fees. Some providers will waive the fee. $ US are widely accepted, but you first have to convert and then you usually get a lousy rate when using them.

Yeah, Kona flights may be cheap, but it isn’t that cheap there and “beach” and “Kona” are not really used in the same sentence other than “on the same island as Kona, there are a few beaches, usually at high priced hotels”.
For cheap and hot and beach, you should check out Mexico, west side. Puerto Vallarta, Huatulco, Ixtapa, Cabo, the Baja or even California (but the exchange is painful). You could phone a travel agent for some “cheap deal” ideas, then do a bit of searching for yourself.

Seeking Sunshine: A Quiet, Affordable Beach Escape

As the cool autumn winds sweep across Calgary, the memories of a lackluster summer linger, leaving you yearning for a warm, tranquil escape. Fear not, for there are affordable destinations where you can bask in the sun, indulge in your favorite books, and recharge your batteries.

Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Nestled along the Caribbean coast of Mexico's Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen offers an idyllic blend of sun, sand, and affordability. With its wide stretches of powdery white beaches and turquoise waters, it's the perfect place to lounge and immerse yourself in your literary adventures.

Accommodation in Playa del Carmen can be surprisingly budget-friendly, especially if you opt for a cozy AirBnB or a modest hotel away from the bustling heart of the town. The local cuisine, while not gourmet, offers a delightful array of traditional Mexican fare, from tacos and ceviche to refreshing margaritas.

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Punta Cana, a slice of paradise on the eastern coast of the Dominican Republic, is another excellent option for an affordable beach getaway. With its palm-fringed beaches and warm Caribbean waters, it's a haven for those seeking relaxation and rejuvenation.

All-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana can be remarkably budget-friendly, especially during the shoulder seasons of October and November. While the food may not be gourmet, it's plentiful and satisfying, allowing you to focus on soaking up the sun and losing yourself in your favorite literary worlds.

Safety Considerations

While both Playa del Carmen and Punta Cana are generally considered safe destinations, it's always advisable to take basic precautions. Stay in well-lit areas, keep valuables secure, and be mindful of your surroundings. Research trusted accommodations and consult with travel advisories before booking your trip.

Remember, the ultimate goal is to find a peaceful sanctuary where you can unwind, indulge in your literary passions, and bask in the warmth of the sun, leaving the stresses of daily life behind.
