Similar to a post from yesterday but thinking of doing Portugal, Spain, and Morocco in the span of two weeks. Any recommendations on where to go? Any tips for crossing borders? Thanks in advance!

We went 2 years ago, 1 week in Portugal and 20 days in Morocco. Great holiday. We actually booked tour with Intredip travel. Because we were a group, we were able to customize the trip. Did everything and more! In Morocco, we stayed right inside medina. Guide strongly recommended. Intrepid did all pick-ups, transfers, hotel booking and tours.

I did these three countries in 3 weeks (one week each) on a tour. It was fabulous but you may want to add another week to your trip to do justice to them. Even in three weeks, I missed a lot (for example, in Spain went to Salamanca, Madrid, Seville, Granada, Toledo, Cordoba, yet no time for Barcelona). In all, it is a great trio!

From Malaga in Spain you can take a ferry to morocco. Close enough to do a day trip or stay over.

Barcelona and Granada are a must in Spain. Madrid is also lovely if you like musuems. Ferries also go from tariffa in Spain to tangier in Morocco. Train travel is super cheap in Morocco and convenient between cities. Skip Casablanca. Rabat, Fez and Marrakesh are fabulous.

If you make it to Fez, Chefchaouen is also a great place to visit.

Can take a ferry from Tarifa to Tangier. The port is a 15 min walk from the old medina. The ferry runs every hour and takes about an hour. Tarifa is a pretty nice tiny town worth for a half day trip before heading out. Can take a bus to there from Malaga.

The trains are a great way to get around Spain, you want to see Granada Madrid Barcelona and the Basque region. Then rent a car and drive down to Porto and Portugal is a smallish country. I would fly to Marrakesh from either Lisbon or Madrid and then take a tour to the Atlas mountains.

Portugal - go to the walled cities. And.... we did a boat trip in Portimao to see the beautiful cliffs from the water. Definitely a highlight.

Overnight train from Lisbon to Madrid (or vice versa) - saves time, book early to keep cost down. If you are not going to south Spain, take discount flight (book early to get best fares) from Madrid to Marrakesh - go through Atlas mountains and overnight in desert.

We were in Portugal and Spain last year. We took a flight from Madrid to Porto then train from Porto to Lisbon and overnight buses from Lisbon to Seville to Granada. I recommend Seville Grenada, Madrid and day trip to Toledo; in Lisbon take a day trip to Sintra if you have the time. Overnight buses are most economical but we found some good train and flight deals last year. If you plan to go to the Alhambra and Alcazar buy tickets online in advance. We loved all those cities but 2 weeks may be tight.

there is a lot to see in Barcelona but I have done it twice and won't go back. when last May, still cold but so crowded in places you had to watch walking so u did not trip. everything has gone up expodentially and ou must book ahead for many places or u cannot get in. Good news is you can book on line ahead of time.Familia ans Gauddi amazing but they rush you through like cattle?

So true! We couldn't get in to Park Guell because hundreds ahead of us had booked online, which hadn't been the case a few years ago- make sure you do book ahead for any of the major attractions including all the Gaudi highlights or you may loose a chance to visit

The white towns in Spain are stunning, Rhonda was a highlight of anywhere we have been in Southern Spain. Beautiful countryside and views. If you want to enjoy a beach visit while you are in the South Nerja still has a charming old town and nice beaches, some of the other stops on the Costa Del Sol are pretty run down/ overrun with British tourists making it fell a little less like Spain. The trains in Spain are very reliable and travel 300 kms an hour so usually they are better/ more convenient than renting a car depending on where you plan to visit.
As someone else mentioned the Basque region is simply divine as well in Northern Spain- San Sebastián is amazing if food and good wine combined with beautiful beaches and architecture are your thing!
What a wonderful trip you are planning

Two Weeks in Portugal, Spain, and Morocco

Traveling to Portugal, Spain, and Morocco in the span of two weeks can be an incredible adventure, but it requires careful planning and preparation. Here are some recommendations and tips to help you make the most of your trip.

Portugal

  • Lisbon: Start your journey in the vibrant capital city of Lisbon. Explore the charming neighborhoods of Alfama and Bairro Alto, visit the iconic Belém Tower, and indulge in delicious Portuguese cuisine.
  • Porto: Head north to the charming city of Porto, famous for its Port wine and stunning Ribeira district. Don't miss a boat tour along the Douro River and a visit to the Port wine cellars.

Spain

  • Seville: Cross the border into Spain and immerse yourself in the rich culture of Seville. Explore the breathtaking Alcázar, Plaza de España, and the iconic Giralda tower.
  • Granada: Visit the awe-inspiring Alhambra palace and the picturesque Albayzín neighborhood in Granada. Don't miss the opportunity to experience a traditional flamenco show.

Morocco

  • Marrakech: Venture into Morocco and experience the vibrant city of Marrakech. Wander through the bustling Jemaa el-Fnaa square, explore the vibrant souks, and marvel at the stunning architecture of the Koutoubia Mosque.
  • Fez: Head to the ancient city of Fez and get lost in the labyrinth of narrow alleyways and traditional tanneries. The Fez Medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a true gem.

Tips for Crossing Borders

  • Travel Documents: Make sure you have a valid passport with at least six months of validity remaining. Check if you need a visa for any of the countries you plan to visit.
  • Transportation: Research different transportation options, such as trains, buses, or rental cars, to cross borders efficiently. Consider the distance between destinations and the time required for border crossings.
  • Currency: Be aware of the different currencies used in each country (Euro in Portugal and Spain, Moroccan Dirham in Morocco) and carry enough cash or accessible funds for your travels.
  • Cultural Awareness: Familiarize yourself with the local customs and dress codes, especially when visiting religious sites or conservative areas.

Remember, this is just a suggested itinerary, and you can tailor it to your interests and preferences. With proper planning and an open mind, your two-week adventure through Portugal, Spain, and Morocco will be an unforgettable experience filled with rich culture, stunning architecture, and delicious cuisine.
