Get your resort to arrange it for you. Don't rent anything from the airport
Sonia
Driving in Mexico is crazy! Make sure you get the insurance through the rental company....not just through your credit card or personal insurance.
Sonia
And I ALWAYS go with enterprise
Bev
Wouldn’t advise driving here....if you think Calgary drivers are crazy wait till you see theirs. Book taxi or tours from hotels. Avoid the trolls at the airport.
Lisa
Exactly how I felt when there lol
Amanda
For what it's worth, we were advised not to drive ourselves anywhere in Mexico. Our west jet rep at both resorts we've visited told us that the cops there can be less than upstanding, so seeing tourists behind the wheel could prompt them to pull us over and demand a payout or get taken in.
Sonia
I agree with Bev it's truly not worth the risk of driving. Like I said driving in Mexico is scary! In a taxi we almost got into 2 accidents in a 2 block distance. They just don't care there. If you DO drive like I also said get the rental companies insurance! I stress that
Iva
If you decide to not rent a car, they have uber there. Super easy to use and I found it cheaper and better quality cars than the taxi's.
Karla
Haven't done it in Mexico but in Dominican we got the resort to book us a taxi for touring town. Did it a couple of times and got a driver we really liked. Now when family is there they call him directly to book and is cheaper than if booked through the resort (he doesn't have to pay a commission / dispatch charge to the resort).

I Rent a car always in puerto Vallarta. Alamo or national have been really good. Cheap also. Just go online and book before you go. They are all at the airport. You have to get the liability. The rest my credit card covers. Driving is really easy also. Have been driving there for years.
Greg
PV should be fine except for right downtown/Centro. If you're closer to the airport or in the Bucharais area and are driving to Sayulita, Punta Mita etc then you'll be fine.
KT
We've rented from Gecko rentals in Bucerias before... they've been very good and are cheaper then the places to the airport.
Shelley
Bus is cheap to get on
Ana-Mari
I always rent from them. They are down town and will drive the car out to you
Jennifer
We had a wonderful experience with Gecko in Bucerias. They delivered our rental to Puerto Vallarta

Thanks tons everyone
Laurie
Agreed, Gecko is the best.

Renting a Vehicle in Puerto Vallarta: Tips and Experiences
Puerto Vallarta, a vibrant coastal city in Mexico, is a popular destination for families and groups seeking adventure and relaxation. If you're planning a trip with a group of six people, renting a spacious vehicle can make your vacation more convenient and comfortable. In this blog post, we'll share some insights and experiences from fellow travelers who have rented vehicles in Puerto Vallarta.
The Need for a Larger Vehicle
With a group of six, finding a vehicle that can accommodate everyone, along with their luggage, can be a challenge. Renting a larger vehicle, such as a van or an SUV, can provide the necessary space and comfort for your group. It also allows you to explore the surrounding areas and attractions without feeling cramped.
Good Experiences
Many travelers have had positive experiences renting vehicles in Puerto Vallarta. Here are some of their recommendations:
- Reputable Rental Companies: Major rental companies like Hertz, Avis, and Budget have a strong presence in Puerto Vallarta and offer a wide selection of vehicles, including larger options suitable for groups. Their well-maintained fleet and reliable service make them a popular choice among travelers.
- Local Rental Agencies: Some travelers have had great experiences with local rental agencies like Rentalee or Vallarta Rent-A-Car. These companies often offer competitive rates and personalized service, making them a viable option for those seeking a more local experience.
- Inclusive Packages: Some resorts and hotels in Puerto Vallarta offer inclusive packages that include a rental vehicle as part of the deal. This can be a convenient option if you're staying at one of these properties and want to bundle your travel expenses.
Potential Challenges
While many travelers have had positive experiences, it's important to be aware of potential challenges when renting a vehicle in Puerto Vallarta:
- Hidden Fees: Some rental companies may have hidden fees or additional charges that can add up quickly. Be sure to read the fine print and ask about any additional costs upfront.
- Language Barriers: If you're not fluent in Spanish, communication with local rental agencies or staff may be a challenge. Consider using a reputable company with English-speaking staff or bringing a translation app or phrasebook.
- Driving Conditions: The roads in Puerto Vallarta and surrounding areas can be narrow, winding, and crowded, especially in the city center. Be prepared for these driving conditions and consider purchasing additional insurance for peace of mind.
Cost-Saving Tips
To avoid breaking the bank, here are some cost-saving tips for renting a vehicle in Puerto Vallarta:
- Book in Advance: Reserving your rental car well in advance can often secure better rates and availability.
- Compare Prices: Use online comparison tools or call multiple rental companies to find the best deal for your group's needs.
- Consider Off-Airport Rentals: Rental companies at airports often charge higher rates and fees. Look for off-airport rental locations, which can be more affordable.
- Opt for a Basic Model: While you'll need a larger vehicle for your group, you may not necessarily need all the bells and whistles. Stick to a basic model to save on costs.
Renting a vehicle in Puerto Vallarta can be a convenient and cost-effective way to explore the area with your group. By doing your research, reading reviews, and being mindful of potential challenges, you can have a memorable and enjoyable trip.
