Navigating Layovers in Lima and Mexico City: Tips and Recommendations
Greetings, fellow travelers! Based on your itinerary, you have raised some valid concerns regarding your layovers in Lima and Mexico City. Let's dive into the details and provide you with some helpful advice.
Lima Layover and Connecting Flight to Cusco
With only a one-hour layover in Lima before your connecting flight to Cusco, you may face some challenges. Here's what you should consider:
- Immigration and Customs Process: Since you're transiting through Lima, you will likely need to pass through immigration and customs. This process can be time-consuming, especially during peak hours. Having only carry-on luggage will certainly help expedite your journey.
- Airport Transfer: Jorge Chávez International Airport is a relatively compact airport, which works in your favor. However, you should familiarize yourself with the airport layout and the location of your departure gate for the Cusco flight to minimize transfer time.
- Recommendation: If possible, try to book flights with a longer layover in Lima, preferably at least 2-3 hours. This will give you a buffer in case of any delays or unexpected circumstances.
Mexico City Layover
With a layover of approximately 15 hours in Mexico City, you have ample time to explore the vibrant capital. Here are some suggestions:
- City Tour: Consider booking a guided city tour or hop-on-hop-off bus tour. These tours will allow you to see the highlights of Mexico City, such as the Zócalo, Palacio Nacional, Chapultepec Park, and the iconic Museo Nacional de Antropología.
- Luggage Storage: If you plan to venture out of the airport, it's advisable to store your luggage at the airport's luggage storage facility. This will allow you to explore the city without the burden of carrying your bags.
- Airport Amenities: If you prefer to stay within the airport premises, Mexico City International Airport offers various dining options, shopping opportunities, and lounges where you can relax and freshen up.
Lima Layover on the Return Journey
On your return journey, you have an extended layover of approximately 15 hours in Lima. Consider the following options:
- City Tour: Similar to Mexico City, you can book a guided tour or explore Lima's attractions independently. Visit the historic center, Plaza de Armas, Miraflores district, and indulge in the delicious Peruvian cuisine.
- Day Trip: If time permits, you could even plan a day trip to nearby destinations like Pachacamac or Callao.
- Airport Lounge: If you prefer to stay at the airport, consider purchasing a lounge pass for a more comfortable layover experience.
Remember, layovers can be an opportunity to explore new destinations or simply recharge before your next flight. Proper planning, flexibility, and an open mindset will ensure a memorable and enjoyable travel experience.
Safe travels and have an amazing time in Peru and Mexico!

Hi everyone, looking for some advice for LIMA, PERU and MEXICO CITY:
I have a flight with layover in Mexico city then to flying into Lima (Jorge Chávez International Airport) - arriving at 5;45am I have an immediate connecting flight (only 1hr layover in Lima) to Cusco, so I'm worried I won't have enough time for the transfer if I pass customs in Lima ... any advice? (no checked bags, I will have my bags as carry-on only)
Also for layovers any recommendations for where to go/tours/etc. or where I should leave luggage?:
MEXICO CITY: 1 day (from 6:05am til 9:15pm) stop on my way there
LIMA:1 day (from 2:15pm til 5:00am the following day) stop on my way back -
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance
