Mephisto is extremely comfortable and good looking. Ecco and Timberland have some comfy, nice looking shoes also. Don't know much about Keen or Keys.

Geox is my go-to sneak for Europe trips. They're super comfortable, look great with everything and last.

Did a Mediterranean cruise and a week in Italy. My husband and I both had bought walking shoes for this trip. It was July and it was very hot. The only thing we both ended up wearing were a good pair of flip flops. Go to rhe flip flop store in south center and buy a good pair. They have support. Otherwise your feet will be hot and sweaty.

I wore Skechers Go Walk slip ons for 6 weeks of walking in Italy. On hot days it was Go Walk flip flops!

I second this! Wore them in Spain in May and it was warm. Love my Sketchers.

I love my keens! I've been stuck a couple times over the years wearing them for 36 hours straight and they were still comfy! If you watch the keens website they have lots more selection and sometimes sales. I find them true to size (hiking boot, sandal or runner I wear the same size!). Gravity pope shoes also has some good sales on them.

Mephisto all the way. Way less expensive in Europe.

Another idea when you are doing a lot of walking is to wear one pair of good shoes the first half of the day....then switch to a second pair for the second half.

Skechers Go Walk - wore them for 3 weeks in Europe. Work like a charm.

Geox Respira. Averaged 25,000 steps per day. Helped take the edge off. If anything, my legs were more tired than my feet.

Never buy Birkenstock. The bottom is now made of cork and they feel like walking on cement! Feet ache after an hour or so. I should have clued in when the sales clerk told me they had to be broken in? Da on my part.

Profile picture of Nya

Nya

They have always been made of cork...it definitely takes a break in period as they form to your foot. I can walk forever in my Birkenstocks!! Been wearing them for 20+ years:)

Please don't get something Hot Pink or orange that screams " running shoe" and marks you as a tourist. Anything with a good sole in a neutral colour pared with a great scarf and you will be all set!

Profile picture of Kathryn

Amen to that! So many guides have told us that flashy runners and backpacks are calling "tourist!" to pickpockets.

So my neon pink workout shoes are a no go? Ha

I have a kind of darker pink running shoe, incredible comfy, but some places I feel incredibly out of place. Something darker and more neutral in colour is a definite need for my next pair.

I have 3 pairs of Keens I love (2 mary jane style, 1 slip on type). Great arch support. Also, if you are looking for sandals and arch support is important, Chaco sandals are excellent. I've had mine for over 5 years, and they are still in great shape. Also have lifetime warranty on the webbing.

Geox or clarks. I have always bought clarks walking shoes but recently bought a pair of Geox with net breathable sides and love them!! I went to a convention in Anaheim (no car so walked from our hotel too) and both Disney parks and they were so comfortable! I have bought Clarks for years too and they are great as well. Walked all over Europe in them. Took them for a 2 week trip to Paris and Geneva - again no car - walked everywhere and we did a 15 day river cruise (Budapest to Amsterdam) with walking tours every day. Geox at crossiron has a great sale on right now

I love my Goex runners. Look good enough for going out and are super comfy. Did miles in them in Prauge and Austria and they look as good as new.

I'll throw my vote in for Birkenstocks. I have used them on 3 trips to Europe now. I have 3 pairs -different colours and a couple different styles. Walked 25+ km some days in them and feet not tired.

Agreed! I did Disney in my Birkenstocks and didn't have any pain.

I know a lot of people are recommending brands that are well known for making great hiking/walking footwear, but don't overlook some of the more common brands like Nike or Adidas for flip flops. I would highly recommend ones with memory foam. I've had numerous pairs and they don't last forever, but you can wear them all day. They are also very light so pack easily and won't weigh you down if you just bring them along to change into.

Alegria are the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn. I could hike in them I swear.

Profile picture of Lori

I just bought a nice pair of black Nike runners. They go with anything, not too bulky or heavy.
A girl on my tour read tons of reviews and bought croc sexy flips for sandals. We were walking 20 km a day on cobblestone and she LOVED them.

I have done trips with Keens and Merrills. I just came back from a trip to Quebec where we walked everywhere wearing my Taos sandals. Great support, comfy and cute. No sore feet for me!

I will give a different perspective. EVERYONE HAS A DIFFERENT FOOT!! I am a kong time Keens wearer, but have a very high arch & Instep and I need a wider toe box because of my longer 2nd & third toes, so Keens were good, compared to other products. However, while in Maui recently, I went into a store called The Walking Company. You need to walk on a computer connected pad to assess your foot and they recommend what is best for your foot. They carried a brand I never heard of called ABEO. Best sandal for MY FOOT ever. I need more arch than Keen and they had it. For my foot, I also love Olukai flip flops, which I discovered on the Big Island, but MEC carries them now.

Profile picture of Jen

Jen

Olukai are amazing! You can get them at quite a few stores and online. My Sole Addiction (online or the physical store is in Grande Prairie) has a number of them on for a very good sale price right now.

Best Walking Shoes for Europe

If you're planning on doing a lot of walking while you're in Europe, it's important to make sure you have a pair of shoes that are comfortable and supportive. Here are a few of the best walking shoes for Europe that meet those criteria:

  • Keens: Keens are known for their comfort and durability, and they're a great choice for walking on cobblestones and other uneven surfaces. They also have a good amount of arch support, which is important for long days of walking.
  • Keds: Keds are a more casual option that can be dressed up or down. They're comfortable and lightweight, and they have a rubber sole that provides good traction. However, they don't have as much arch support as some of the other shoes on this list.
  • Veja: Veja is a French brand that makes stylish and sustainable sneakers. Their sneakers are made from recycled materials, and they're comfortable and supportive. They're a great option for people who want to look good while they're walking around Europe.
  • Allbirds: Allbirds is another sustainable brand that makes comfortable and stylish sneakers. Their sneakers are made from wool, which is naturally temperature-regulating and moisture-wicking. They're a great option for people who want a shoe that will keep their feet comfortable all day long.
  • Brooks: Brooks is a running shoe brand that also makes great walking shoes. Their shoes are designed to provide support and cushioning, and they're a good choice for people who need a shoe with a lot of arch support.

No matter what type of walking shoe you choose, make sure to break them in before you travel. This will help to prevent blisters and other foot problems.
