Are Yoga Teacher Training Programs Abroad Accredited and Legit?

I did a 200 hour yoga teacher training certificate in Rishikesh, India in 2016. It was a wonderful experience learning in a holy place with people from all over the world.

I did mine in Mexico. In my experience as a teacher (and former studio owner) as long as they’re accredited with Yoga Alliance, you should be good. If you plan to teach, yoga studios might request you to have your own liability insurance and that can only be obtained if your YTT is accredited via Yoga Alliance. I could be wrong because my experience in that scene is a bit outdated… but maybe check the Yoga Alliance website.

I did in Costa Rica with

As above, as long as registered with Yoga Alliance, you're good to go as far as recognition of your training

I didn’t do YTT (no interest) but I am a big fan of the people, atmosphere and yoga at Orion Healing on Koh Phangan in Thailand.

Yoga Teacher Training Abroad: Finding Your Path
Dreaming of sun salutations overlooking a tropical beach or finding your inner peace amidst ancient ruins? Embarking on a yoga teacher training (YTT) program abroad can be a transformative experience, blending personal growth with cultural immersion. But with so many options, it's crucial to do your research to ensure a safe, fulfilling, and accredited experience, especially if you plan to teach upon your return to Calgary.
Planning Your International YTT Adventure: Key Considerations
Taking your YTT journey international requires careful planning. Here's a breakdown of key factors to consider:
- Accreditation: Research the accreditation of the program. Yoga Alliance is a widely recognized organization, and certification through them can make it easier to find teaching opportunities. Check if the specific style (e.g., Hatha, Vinyasa, Yin) aligns with your interests and career goals. Contact Yoga Alliance directly or check their website for a list of registered schools. This is especially important for recognition back in Calgary.
- Location, Location, Location: Consider the culture, climate, and overall environment. Are you drawn to the beaches of Bali, the mountains of Nepal, or the bustling cities of Europe? Each location offers a unique experience. Reflect on what resonates with you and complements your learning style.
- Program Length & Intensity: YTT programs vary from intensive month-long immersions to part-time programs spread over several months. Evaluate your schedule and commitment level to find the best fit. Be realistic about the time you can dedicate.
- Teacher Experience & Style: Research the lead trainers and their backgrounds. Look for experienced teachers with a teaching style that aligns with your preferences. Reviews and testimonials from previous students can be incredibly helpful.
- Cost & Budget: Factor in not just the tuition fee but also travel, accommodation, food, and any extra activities or excursions. Establish a clear budget and compare prices across different programs.
- Visa Requirements: Thoroughly research visa regulations for the country you're considering. Some countries offer specific visas for study purposes. Ensure you have the necessary documents and apply well in advance.
- Safety & Health: Check travel advisories and research the safety and health conditions in your chosen location. Consider travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and any program-related issues.
Finding the Right Program
Starting your search early is key, particularly for programs starting after May 2022. Online resources like Yoga Alliance, Yoga Journal, and specific yoga style websites can help you discover accredited programs. Reach out to yoga studios in Calgary; they may have recommendations or connections to international programs. Don't underestimate the power of word-of-mouth – connect with other yogis who have completed YTT programs abroad.
Tip: Attend online information sessions or contact program alumni directly to get firsthand insights into their experiences. Ask specific questions about the curriculum, the teaching style, and the overall experience.
Returning to Calgary
Once you've completed your YTT, ensure you have the necessary certificates and documentation. Contact Yoga studios in Calgary and inquire about teaching opportunities. Your international experience can be a significant asset, demonstrating your dedication and unique perspective.
Finding the right YTT program abroad is an investment in yourself and your future as a yoga teacher. By conducting thorough research, asking the right questions, and staying open to possibilities, you can find a program that aligns with your aspirations and sets you on a path to sharing the transformative power of yoga.

Sort of off topic - Has anyone done yoga teacher training in another country? I know things are uncertain right now but I would like to start looking into different programs abroad starting after May 2022. Want to make sure the program is accredited and legit when I come back to Calgary. TIA!
