Has anyone stayed in the Mayan Riviera and made your own food? No all inclusive? How easy is it to purchase groceries?

Very easy. Playa del Carmen has some large grocery stores. I have stayed in a condo several times and ordered online. Groceries are in your condo when you arrive.

Ok sorry for being mean, I guess I am just thinking if a person doesn't travel a lot they would not know. My apologies.

Actually don't travel at all... This would be a first out of Canada/US/Japan. I'm a bit nervous to travel to Mexico.. And venture out of resort. Do you take a cab, bus, walk?

If youre in a resort most of them are all inclusive and very good deal f you dont venture out. Lots of safe local grocery stores in Playa. Been there many times and although its changing stay in the well lit areas and ON the beaten track and youll be fine. Taxis readily available, walk if youre in playa, dont get sucked into timeshare adventures EVER!!!!

Playa Del Carmen is in the Yucatan which is the safest area of Mexico......safer then most places in the US. Likely Canada too. We were there recently......we took cabs, took buses, walked around.....never felt unsafe. We've been going for years. We rented a condo in Playa and got our groceries at Mega.

yes i have. We backpacked through the Mayan Riviera. It was fun. Eat out most of the time as we didn't had cooking accessibility in the cabanas we rented, but it was cheap and awesome!

You will probably fly into Cancun - they have a Costco as well, but it is more fun to visit local grocery stores.

Best travel advice to avoid timeshares- always wear sunglasses - especially when going off the plane and through the airport. That way when you go through the first area you don't make eye contact with anyone.

Haha true, but I need a break from the cold and don't mind cooking and cleaning for myself
especially when it means there is sunshine and a pool to relax at.

Collectivos (15 seat passenger buses) for transport is the least expensive and most comfortable. To Tulum around $3.50 CDN to Cancun $3.50 CDN so cheap.

Staying in the Mayan Riviera: Grocery Shopping and Cooking Your Own Meals

The Mayan Riviera, known for its stunning beaches, turquoise waters, and rich cultural heritage, is a popular destination for travelers seeking an all-inclusive resort experience. However, for those looking to immerse themselves in the local culture and cuisine, opting for a self-catering accommodation and cooking your own meals can be a rewarding and cost-effective option.

Purchasing Groceries in the Mayan Riviera

One of the advantages of staying in the Mayan Riviera and cooking your own meals is the abundance of grocery stores and local markets. From large supermarket chains to smaller neighborhood markets, you'll find a wide variety of fresh produce, meat, fish, and pantry staples.

Some of the popular grocery stores in the Mayan Riviera include Walmart, Chedraui, and Soriana. These stores offer a convenient one-stop shopping experience, where you can find everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to packaged goods and household items. Additionally, many of these stores have bakery and deli sections, making it easy to pick up freshly baked bread or prepared meals if you don't feel like cooking.

For a more authentic experience, visit the local markets, where you can find an array of fresh, locally sourced ingredients. These markets are not only a great place to shop but also offer a glimpse into the local culture and cuisine. You'll find vendors selling everything from freshly caught fish and seafood to exotic fruits and vegetables you may have never tried before.

Cooking Your Own Meals in the Mayan Riviera

Once you've stocked up on groceries, cooking your own meals in the Mayan Riviera can be a delightful experience. Many vacation rentals and Airbnbs in the area come equipped with fully functional kitchens, making it easy to prepare meals just like you would at home.

Exploring the local cuisine is a must when visiting the Mayan Riviera. From traditional Mayan dishes like cochinita pibil (slow-roasted pork) and sopa de lima (lime soup) to Mexican staples like tacos and guacamole, there's a wealth of delicious and flavorful recipes to try.

If you're feeling adventurous, consider taking a cooking class or attending a food tour to learn more about the local ingredients and cooking techniques. Not only will you gain valuable culinary skills, but you'll also have a deeper appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of the Mayan Riviera.

Final Thoughts

Staying in the Mayan Riviera and cooking your own meals can be a rewarding and cost-effective way to experience the local culture and cuisine. With a wide range of grocery stores and local markets, purchasing fresh and authentic ingredients is easy and convenient. Embrace the opportunity to explore new flavors, experiment with local recipes, and create lasting memories through the shared experience of cooking and dining.
