It's super expensive. My friend and I used points to rent a car and still ended up paying over $1000 for 2 and a half weeks. If you can drive standard, rent a standard. It's cheaper. I'd recommend a gps because there aren't really any street signs.
Driving was fun and there's so much to see.

Thanks for the input.

Try autoeurope - we are going about the same time and have booked a VW Passat for about $700 CAD (includes insurance) - GPS cost around 14 Euro per day so if you already have one it might be cheaper to purchase European maps for it before you go, or just purchase a GPS when you get there - it often turns out a cheaper option
Kimm
Thanks. How long is your rental for?
Kimm
And is that insurance through the rental company?
Paulette
It is for 2 weeks, picking up and dropping off at Dublin airport - yes that is it added insurance through the rental company - I'll have to check which company it was - either Dollar or Sixt - car is a manual transmission

I am wondering if you bought insurance with replacement deductible or zero deductible. I'm looking at both and trying to decide. The zero deductible covers glass, under carriage, etc. Any thoughts you'd mind sharing?
Paulette
we usually buy the collision damage waiver CDW insurance - have never bought the all inclusive that includes mirrors, windshields etc, - the only place I have read that it might be worthwhile getting the all inclusive is in Spain and Portugal because apparently they are CRAZY drivers and it is not unusual to have mirrors and stuff knocked off - I'll try and find some info on that

Here is an article from tripadvisor about Ireland car rental - lots of good info but some of the responses are about 4 years old - I gleaned a lot of information from the 8th response https://www.tripadvisor.ca/ShowTopic-g186591-i88-k4319428...

If you decide not to rent a car. Check out groupon.ie for tours from Dublin. Booked few with paddywagon tours and saw a bit of Ireland.

Hertz in Dublin offers wifi hotspot devices in their vehicles but you have to reserve it in advance because they run out quickly
