Finding the Perfect Alternative to Aeroplan: Credit Card Options

Question:

Profile picture of Chris

Chris

I have pretty much had it with aeroplan, so I am looking for advice regarding credit cards giving travel rewards. I have had an aeroplan card for so long, that I don't know what else is out there. Any recommendations?

Humans say...

westjet Mastercard is awesome....yearly $99 companion fare, free luggage and you collect westjet dollars.....

Profile picture of Michelle

Michelle

Oh and you get $250 westjet dollars just for signing up.....

I was so done with them so I switched to CIBC Aventura-still points but you can use them on any airline and also to pay taxes on the flight. They have a whole catologue of stuff you can order from if you don't want to use them for flights.

I use aeroplan points for gift cards, including my annual Costco renewal.

I use the TD First Class infinite Visa. You earn points and can redeem them on any airline anywhere anytime or just use the points on whatever you like. Free cancellation and they don't charge for flight changes.

We also go through TD visa and our travel points collect so fast! Although my husband puts his business expenses on it that might be why
we just took our family of 4 to Florida in January on points and already have enough to go again if we wanted

Love my westjet MasterCard use it for everything and have saved so much!

With west jet you have to make over 120,000 income to get the best rewards. I have had aeroplan before. It is more difficult to get the dates to fly that you want. I have had to fly a different day then my husband with aeroplan. I like airmiles. You can collect miles quickly. Thrifty alway in there flyer offer spend 75.00 and get 100 airmiles, also prescription at thrifty give you 7 times the miles.the the bmo MasterCard will give you 1airmile for every 15.00 you spend

Profile picture of Wendy

Wendy

No you don't. I have the highest card with the most rewards and didn't make that when I qualified. Me and my husband each have our own to get the 2 buddy passes a year. I was told 70,000 income. Maybe 120,000 is combined household income?

Profile picture of Chris

Chris

No i think you have been misinformed also. Who makes $120,000 yr anymore. I have there card also and was told $60,000. westjet card saved me $850 last year on flights.

Profile picture of Wendy

Wendy

We used 2 buddy passes last year one trip was to the east coast so saved quite a bit there, plus no baggage fees and I'm up to another $750 in westjet dollars. I use that card for everything and it adds up quickly. If you're going to use the buddy passes it's worth it I think. Plus you can use the westjet dollars on their vacation packages also so it helps when you're trying to escape the snow.

You need $70K personal income or $120K household income for the WJ MC.

Profile picture of Mike

aeroplan is awesome if, you let it decide where to take you ! i use capitol one its one the best ravel cards hand down. west jet is okay but takes forever to get enough douhg to go anywhere and lets face it your only going where westjet goes

Profile picture of Chris

Chris

You have all given me a lot of food for thought. I am going to do a comparison of all of the suggested cards. I wonder if it is possible to transfer my aeroplan miles to any of them. I have over 140,000 miles.

Profile picture of Matt

Matt

Where do you want to go and when? aeroplan is more lucrative than it seems if you dig down a bit. Anytime around Christmas or major holidays is going to be tough. There are ways to search to find the specific flight you want aswell. Let me know where you want to go, when, and if you have any flexibility and I will take a look for you. 140,000 aeroplan miles are much more valuable than rbc, td, Cibc or any other points, I guarantee you!
They frustrate the hell out of me too but are much more useful if you know how to use them?

Profile picture of Chris

Chris

It's not the flights I am having an issue with. We are pretty much always flexible with our dates and times. Right now it is my inability to get in touch with customer service to lodge a complaint.

Profile picture of Christin

Have you tried 1-800-361-5373? I managed to talk to someone in customer service just a couple of weeks ago.

i would buy them off you if it was possible

Profile picture of Chris

The price they want to charge for selling the miles is outrageous. I don't think you'd want to do that. I thought you didn't like Aeroplan.

read my statement , i let it take me where i wan to go.

for a 120k you can get 4 american express gift cards worth 250 each

aeroplan is by far the best option for Canadians. It works best if you can take advantage of the very lucrative multiple free stopovers and open-jaws or the great deals for business class and first class. I can help you possibly. The only other good options are Alaska miles (MBNA has an alaska airlines master card) and American Express (which allows transfers to aeroplan, British avios, delta, air asia and a few more)..... Nothing else is that good. All other cards like the capital one are only 1 cent per point/mile so 25,000 points is only worth $250 of travel. For example, earlier this year I took a business class trip with aeroplan around the world stopping in Tanzania and Ethiopia Uganda for 2 months and then Japan for 3 weeks on the way home. It was just 150,000 points and $750. I got over 15 cents per mile. if they were "capital one" points or other rewards points it would be worth just $1500 plus the $750 in taxes. But the ticket price for this trip was $17,000. Big savings. So it totally depends on the trip. But I have found aeroplan shitty for some simply redemptions like YYC - new york or sometimes going to certain places in Europe.

Profile picture of Chris

Chris

I have found the same thing when I have done comparisons in the past - aeroplan is by far the best bang for the buck. My issue right now is that I had a negative experience with aeroplan with regard to a recent business class trip to Europe and I can't find anyone who will listen to my complaint. I'm frustrated with their lack of customer service these days.

Profile picture of Simone

Simone

I'm a big fan of the changes aeroplan has made by adding Distinction levels which give access to more flight options. We just booked two flights YYC to YVR to HKG return for a total of $388CAD and 130,000 points. Have used aeroplan for Maui and Honolulu trips in the past as well, great itineraries and you can check a 2nd bag for free when travelling on a points ticket / taxes paid with TD aeroplan Visa. Having worked for an airline in the past I've come to learn firsthand that all carriers have good and bad on time performance and customer service skills, it just depends on the day. For this reason I choose to dedicate my financial transactions to aeroplan / air canada. I'm impressed with your stats Chris!

Profile picture of Barb

Barb

Wow if you have 140000 aeroplan miles just use them-check the website for other options besides flights.

Profile picture of Wendy

i think it depends on the type of traveller you are. I primarily travel within north america and the caribean. I'm not a world traveller like Matt. So westjet flies wherever I need to go. Profile picture of Chris

The fees are insane. I do like the free stopover. My last trip was to Denmark with a stopover in Paris. But the business class ticket cost me $1100 in fees (taxes and fuel surcharges).

We gave up on travel rewards cards because we travel at peak times and it rarely worked for us... And the fees were awful.. Find a good cash back card and look for seat sales.

Profile picture of Chris

Chris

That might not be a bad idea.

Profile picture of Lana

Lana

I hate being tied to one company or system... And I would rather have the cash so that I make some choices. We have a TD visa gold that gives us 1% and they waive the annual fee because we bank there. We also have the Costco Capital One Mastercard that gives 2% on gas and restaurants and 1% on everything else. We put everything on the card so the cash back is substantial.

Profile picture of Wendy

Wendy

That's why we like westjet get cash back in westjet dollars to put towards flights so no worry about blackout dates etc...

I do travel internationally, so I'm not sure westjet is the best option for me, but I will definitely look into it.

Profile picture of Matt

What was ur issue? I found people to be very helpful with my issue by posting on flyertalk? aeroplan doesn't respond but other flyers do and that helps give you an idea of what has happened in the past and what they may do if they even try to help?

Scotiabank Amex. I've had it for two years and they pay taxes and fees. I can book on my own. They have payed for flights, hotel stays, rv camping, airport parking, etc. You also have 12 months before you need to have to apply points to your trip.

My nephew is in banking in TO and says the cash back cards are the best reward. However, we still like getting airmiles. BMO world elite. We earn enough yearly to send the kids to the grands in ON each summer just with grocery shopping and watching for bonuses. Easy to use. We also used airmiles to get passes when went to Orlando.

Hubby has rbc avion- I have TD travel rewards card - TD wins hands down! Super easy to redeem, dollar amount covers any type of travel expense including taxes for hotel or car rental or anything plus you can decide AFTER you've travelled already to use points for something you already did (I decided once to use points for a trip is taken a month prior and they applied the points to the back dated request) points seem to accumulate quickly too.
