If you are eligible and obtain road star or road star plus form icbc it includes travel liability (and it’s not a one time thing and cheap).
Alyssa
I believe that only applies to rentals within North America . We were told it wouldn’t cover us in Europe.
Paula
Alyssa yes that’s right only in NA
Heather
Alyssa bCAA to get international drivers license
Terri

Elena

Terri

Call your local Transat travel office or Marlin Travel ( both are a full service travel agency ) and they can help you .

if you get an american express platinum travel credit card you get a credit towards travel plus insurance for rental vehicles. I called them when I was renting a car in Spain to make sure. first year is free, no fees. I used auto europe also, most cars are standard transmission.
Gustavo
Hi Roberta, did you manage to wave Amex Plat annual fee for the 1st year?
Roberta
Gustavo Abreu yes the first year was free and I had a credit put on it
Gustavo
Roberta wow, would pm how you've done it? I got the same card and as far as I know it's one of the most difficult to ditch that (heavy) fee...
Elizabet
I used ryanair in sardiniasnd Italy as they had liability. Be careful if you don’t have that. It’s not offered with your credit cards. Only CDW is.

Last year we rented with Dollar through Hertz for our 15 day trip around Spain. It was by far the cheapest option. A few tips we learned about this company before we booked with them - take pictures of the car beforehand, make sure to document every scratch/rub/dent with the attendant BEFORE leaving. Also only have one registered driver with them, adding a second driver ended up costing more than our entire rental. We went as far as telling the attendant that I didn’t have a driver’s licence so that there would be no confusion (I have a licence but we have heard stories of other renters being charged because a second driver was present and could potentially drive). We didn’t go for the extra insurance as our credit card company covers rental insurance internationally - check with your credit card company to see if they do the same. The attendant tried to put us in a larger vehicle (an SUV) instead of the car we had reserved for no additional charge; turn this down if they offer. Spain has some very narrow streets that will not accommodate an SUV. Overall we were extremely happy with our rental since we knew what to look out for.
Terri
Did you both k it from home or when you got to Spain?
Heather
Terri I second getting the small car in Spain. It is impossible to even park a smaller car sometimes. I rented through Hertz as well, just booked it online while here.
Elena
Agreed! Only small car ( comfort class or economy)
Emily
Terri we booked from home
Terri
Emily thanks. Do you recall the site by chance
Terri

Diana

In Europe there is a mandatory insurance (included in your basic rate) for what is not covered by credit cards.
Heather
Another note but many cars in Europe are stick shifts

Renting a Car in Spain – Tips and Recommendations
Planning a trip to Spain and considering renting a car? With so many options and quotes available, it can be overwhelming to figure out the best deal. Here are some tips and recommendations to help you make an informed decision.
Understand the Insurance Coverage
As you mentioned, you don't need collision insurance since your Visa covers that, but liability insurance for the driver and passengers is essential. Most rental companies in Spain offer liability insurance as part of their rental packages, but it's always a good idea to double-check the coverage and understand the terms and conditions.
Compare Rental Companies
Shop around and compare rates from various rental companies. Some popular options in Spain include Europcar, Avis, Hertz, and local companies like Delpaso or Centauro. Look for any discounts or promotions they might be offering, as these can vary depending on the season and location.
Consider Off-Airport Locations
Renting a car from off-airport locations can often be cheaper than picking up and dropping off at the airport. However, factor in the cost of transportation to and from the rental location and ensure it's convenient for your travel plans.
Pro Tip:
If you plan to rent a car for 22 days, it might be worth checking if the rental company offers any long-term rental discounts or weekly rates, as these can sometimes be more cost-effective than daily rates.
Additional Tips
- Book in advance: Booking your rental car early can help you get better rates and ensure availability, especially during peak travel seasons.
- Consider fuel policies: Some rental companies include fuel, while others require you to return the car with a full tank. Factor in the fuel costs and choose the option that works best for your trip.
- Check for additional fees: Be aware of any additional fees, such as for additional drivers, one-way rentals, or equipment like GPS or child seats.
- Read reviews: Check online reviews for the rental companies you're considering to get an idea of their customer service and overall experience.
Renting a car in Spain can be a great way to explore the country at your own pace. With a little research and planning, you can find a reliable and affordable rental option that suits your needs.
