You can totally do it, but I’d recommend staying at highly rated hostels so you can meet friends, get help organizing activities, and feel safe/supported. I’d also try to arrange travel from city to city in the daylight (if it’s possible) just to be on the safer side. I wouldn’t say Croatia is dangerous, just that traveling alone can make you a bit vulnerable anywhere you are! Split is a fun city with lots to explore and lots going on. From there you can take the ferry to Hvar which is beautiful, and there are lots of party hostels there if you’re into that! If you want to see lots of the mainland and the parks (Krka waterfalls and Plitvice lakes), rent a car. As long as you pick it up and drop it off in the same city it’s VERY cheap!! Tour buses go there but they’re expensive compared to renting a car (I think bus day trip to Plitvice was around €60 per person and goes from 8am to 8pm... or you could rent a car for like €20 a day and only spend as much time as you want there).
Also heads up that Dubrovnik is beautiful, but is a mega tourist trap. Everything there is the same as in Split quality wise but at least 5x more expensive. (Ie. a coffee in Split is $1, in Dubrovnik it’s $5). When you’re on your own take extra care that nobody is taking advantage of you!!!
Good luck!!

I was there solo 2 years ago, and I loved it! No problems at all. I got a cheap flight into Zadar and it was lovely. Beautiful beaches, lots of history, and fewer tourists than Split and Dubrovnik.

My experience with Croatia is limited, but I loved the time I spent there. I was in Dubrovnik for 5 days, back in 2011, during the off season. At the time, it was quiet. But since then, Game Of Thrones and the latest Star Wars movie has filmed there. It was already a bit touristy and wouldn't be surprised if the crowds have really grown. That said, it's a beautiful city and there's some good hiking nearby. There's also some smaller islands that are perfect for day trips outside of the city.
I agree with the comments above... Croatia is as safe as anywhere else in Europe. Keep your wits about you and I'm sure you'll be fine. I stayed in a hostel within the old city. It helped to save some money and there was always people around to share info and make plans for each day.

I found it to be a very safe place. Reminds me of Italy, although smaller, cleaner and safer. Folks very friendly, Cavtat lovely little place to stay, take the water taxi over to Dubrovnik. Take a tour, worth it for the history. Took the Gondola up to the Fort above Dubrovnik, very good. Over to Korchula, Oberich, Lomabarda, the Island of Vernik, all great, recommend to go.

I booked a 7 day cruise with "Sail Croatia" and we'll get to see most of the Croatian islands. Check them out!

Definitely a safe, friendly, inexpensive and interesting place to visit. We travelled by train (Budapest-Zagreb) and slow bus (more scenic than express) to Plitvice Lakes, Split, Dubrovnik. Most residents spoke some English and were only too happy to 'practice'. Check out Buza Bar in Dubrovnik, walk the wall (and everywhere else around there), look for 'free' tip-based walking tours, keep track of cruise ships in Split and Dubrovnik to avoid crowds, eat street food and drink beer!

Slovenia, Bosnia and Montenegro were all much more interesting than Croatia in my opinion. Went in April and found it overpriced and lack lustre... split/ Dubrovnik can be done as day trips.

Not a fan of Croatia the food isn't good, people aren't friendly, the beaches are rocky and just overpriced for that part of Europe. But the old cities and the landscape are beautiful. Can thank Game of Thrones for this. As the comment above those are better countries to explore especially Bosnia and can also add Serbia

I was there in September, on a tour with Intrepid. I did Budapest to Venice, but that full tour is actually 2 half tours. Budapest and the Balkans, and Dubrovnik to Venice. Dubrovnik to Venice gets you to Plitvice, Zagreb, Split, Brac Island. Easy and hassle free way to travel !
But my favorite country was Bosnia. Put that on your list
