Dominical in Costa Rica is the definition of relaxation. The beaches are stunning, you can walk everywhere and not to mention, the best surfing.
Larry
I suggest Nicaragua. Cheaper and safer.
Argentin
Larry not so safe right now.

About Costa Rica, if you enter as a tourist you will receive a stamp in your passport. The immigration officer will hand write the amount of time you can be in the country. It will be up to 90 days but it could be less. It will never be more than 90 days. Before your tourist visa expires you have to leave the country. Doing a "border run" is easy, but you need to be prepared to do this if you want to stay longer than the time that the immigration officer writes in your passport.

Finding Your Ideal Getaway in Costa Rica, Belize, or the Yucatan Peninsula
Ah, the dream of taking an extended mini-sabbatical in tropical paradise! Whether it's the lush rainforests and pristine beaches of Costa Rica, the vibrant culture and ancient Mayan ruins of Belize, or the sun-drenched coastlines of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, these destinations offer the perfect escape to recharge and rejuvenate.
Costa Rica
Costa Rica is a nature lover's paradise, renowned for its stunning beaches, lush rainforests, and incredible biodiversity. For a beach-centric experience within your budget, consider the following areas:
- Samara: This laid-back beach town on the Nicoya Peninsula offers a tranquil atmosphere and beautiful sandy beaches. Rental prices can range from $600 to $1,000 CAD per month for a decent apartment or small house.
- Tamarindo: While more touristy than Samara, Tamarindo still maintains a charming vibe and boasts a lively nightlife scene. Monthly rentals can be found for around $800 to $1,200 CAD.
Belize
Belize is a true gem, offering a unique blend of Caribbean and Central American cultures, along with breathtaking natural wonders like the Belize Barrier Reef and ancient Mayan ruins. Here are a couple of options to consider:
- Placencia: This quaint village on the Placencia Peninsula boasts a 16-mile stretch of sandy beaches and a vibrant local community. Rental prices range from $700 to $1,200 CAD per month for a comfortable apartment or house.
- Caye Caulker: If you're seeking a true island vibe, this small Caribbean island off the coast of Belize City might be just the ticket. Monthly rentals can be found for $600 to $1,000 CAD.
Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
The Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico offers a rich cultural experience, with ancient Mayan ruins, vibrant towns, and stunning beaches. Here are a couple of options to explore:
- Tulum: This trendy beach town is known for its bohemian vibe, ancient Mayan ruins, and stunning beaches. Monthly rentals can range from $800 to $1,200 CAD for a decent apartment or casa.
- Merida: While not on the coast, this colonial city is a cultural hub with a lively downtown area and easy access to nearby beach towns like Progreso. Monthly rentals can be found for $600 to $1,000 CAD.
Finding Accommodations
To find the perfect rental, consider using websites like Airbnb, VRBO, or local real estate listings. Connecting with expat communities or local property management companies can also be helpful in finding off-the-beaten-path gems.
Remember, immersing yourself in the local culture and embracing the laid-back tropical lifestyle is key to making the most of your extended getaway. Enjoy your journey and embrace the adventure!

Hi team. Thinking of taking an extended mini sabattical somewhere like Costa Rica, Belize, or Yucatan in Mexico to regroup. I'm not too familiar with areas in CR but would like to be within walking distance (15-20 min is fine) of a beach. Just looking for an inexpensive monthly rental that's decent and clean (max 1000-1200 CAD/month), close to a market for groceries/food, and has at least a small bar or coffee shop where we could meet some locals.
Any suggestions on where you've traveled that might fit the bill, and/or websites to look at for accommodation that isn't touristy? Or connections with people who have property to rent or need a house sitter?
