Question:

We are going to Phuket, Thailand next Wednesday for 8 days with our 7 year old son. We will stay 4 days in Patong and 4 days in Karon. We would like to visit Phi Phi Island for a day trip, snorkelling etc, so any recommendations on any inexpensive tour operators in Phuket? Also, any suggestions on other places worth visiting and restaurants?

Phi Phi is a party island!
And I would most definitely get a good $$ place there if you are bringing a small child

If you are feeling adventurous, rent a scooter from Karon and drive to the Big Buddha and Laem Promthep Cape lookout (either are beautiful at sunset). The ride is not too far and it's very beautiful! Just be safe on the scooter and take your time
Also in Karon we went to New York burgers and they were delicious! Karon beach is great for swimming, not sure about Patong (I've heard it's quite the party beach).

Thank you for your suggestions. I'm not sure about renting a scooter especially as we have the little one with us. We will definitely visit the Big Buddha, it looks like it's not too far away.

You can always hire a taxi to take you around. Or rent a car?

For safety's sake do not take a cheap boat trip to Koh Phi Phi, they have been known to capsize. 3 years ago we took a trip on Simba sea trips and they were fabulous. It was one of the highlights of our trip to Thailand. Take a read on the forums on TripAdvisor.

I've done the same trip. You'll want to take the regular boat to Phi Phi. If you can avoid bringing all your luggage you'd be better off. The boats are small and many don't actually 'dock' anywhere but rather, a tractor comes and unloads you from the boat...
when you want to do a tour, just walk around, you'll find heaps of options. The one which stops by monkey beach is pretty cool and your kid will love it. Bring some fruit to feed the monkeys!
