Kasha
James I saw something about that I'll look into it. I plan on camping, 6 nights on Kauai camping is $18. So hopefully I can find something similar on Oahu.
Kelly
James where did you stay in the air b and b?
James
Kelly cannot remember address. It was by a food truck and a red store along the coast.. we walked out the house and walked across the road and we were at a beach and ocean
Ruth
Look into camper van rentals. Cheaper than a hotel plus car rental.
Lisa
Ruth which company did you use?
Ruth
Lisa getting info from my son. He did this in Sept, with wife and a 2 yr old.
Ruth
They were in Maui, but there must be others on the other islands also. Maui Camper and Van Rentals LLC. 2676 Wai Wai Place. Kihei HI 96753 (855) 671-1122.

Ruth thank you. Looking forward to your response! We did a camper can in ice,and and it was
Heather
Ruth I heard this was a good option on Maui. Honolulu is a different bread. Still prob a good option I just found hono in general more money then Maui. (altho I did find a cheap skety hotel) compared to what I paid in Maui.
Geocaching is always a good free activity when traveling, and the spin off adventure labs can really tour you around a place.
Kasha
Heather thank you geocaching is a great idea
Wes
I suggest you stay inside a bank because you’re gonna need all that money if you’re going to Hawaii! Lol!
Christy
Wes agreed Hawaii is not budget friendly. Food even at the grocery store is expensive.
Wes
Christy I just watch something on that the other day they were Sean grocery store in Hawaii Safeway. I believe eggs were seven dollars a dozen. That’s the only one I remember.
Christy
Wes Bread was 7-12 dollars a loaf. Pop was $12 a case. Beer was the only think that was reasonable at $1 a beer for bud on sale.
Vicki
Wes bread on the Big Island, in the local grocery store was $9 a loaf!
Lisa
Wes we have found ways to save $. We do not eat out!!!! We stay in an airbnb or vrbo. But yes Hawaii is expensive. But worth it. We have stayed in Maui for a month and, for a month it was cheaper than spending a week at an all inclusive in Mexico. Just depends on what you are looking for
Laura
Lisa we’ve done that a few times. Get off the plane and go to Costco, and then to Walmart. We also took a small suitcase of spices, ketchup, mustard etc for the kids. We hardly ate out. BBQ’d on the beach and at the pool area.
Lisa
Laura exactly what we do!!!!
Andrews
Budget friendly bahaha but beautiful place we do Hawaii once a year, but even with airbnb, groceries shopping, , flights, car rental roughly 5-8g

Public transit is reasonable and you can go all the way around the island on the bus. Takes all day but is a fun way to see the island.

We stayed at the end of Waikiki close to Diamond head at the Diamond head apartments. Transit right outside.
Kasha
Thank you for all the info.
I was able to find some reasonably price camping spots along with very very cheap spots. I think if one really tries to keep it cheap it is more doable than some may think.
Heidi
I am late to post but we just camped on the big island this past February . We chose to rent a jeep and use a tent because this allowed us to go some places with 4WD that we wouldn’t have been able to with. Camper van.
We used a site called Hipcamp - it’s like vrbo but camping! Camped in some amazing locations!

Have fun!

Exploring Honolulu on a Budget
Hello fellow traveler!
If you're looking to explore Honolulu on a budget, you're in luck. There are plenty of affordable options for accommodations and activities that won't break the bank.
Places to Stay
For budget-friendly accommodations, consider camping or staying at a hostel. Camping at a local campground can be a cost-effective option, allowing you to immerse yourself in nature while saving money. If you prefer a roof over your head, hostels in Honolulu offer affordable dormitory-style accommodations.
Activities
If you're interested in wildlife and birdwatching, Honolulu has plenty to offer. Make sure to visit the Honolulu Zoo and Waikiki Aquarium for a chance to see a variety of animals up close. You can also explore the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, a marine embayment known for its diverse marine life.
For birdwatching opportunities, head to the Diamond Head State Monument or the Manoa Falls Trail, where you may spot native Hawaiian bird species. Public transit in Honolulu is reliable and can take you to most of these locations.
Conclusion
Exploring Honolulu on a budget is definitely possible with the right planning. Consider camping or staying at a hostel for affordable accommodations, and make sure to take advantage of public transit to explore the island. Have a great trip!
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Hello,
I am wondering if anyone has suggestions for things to do in Honolulu and places to stay on a budget.
I am not against camping or hostelling as I want to be as cheap as possible.
As far as activities, I am really interested in seeing the wildlife and birdwatching around the island, I just need to be able to get to the places with public transit.
TIA
