is it cheap once your down there?

I don't think so. Tourists are required to purchase CCU's which are essentially tourist pesos as you cannot use Cuban pesos. For an example. a slice of pizza on the street costs 5 Cuban pesos (worth about nickel), and you, 5 CCU's, @ an exchange rate of $1.35 for CDN dollar. Same thing happened in a bar frequented by Hemingway. A mojito was 8 pesos which exchanges to over $11 CDN. Bring hot sauce for your buffets

Don't go below 5 star.... That's my only suggestion. Oh and if you can to take a day trip into Havana!! It's lovely!

Profile picture of Janine

Janine

unfortunately I probably can't afford a 5 star but hoping for 4

I went to a 4 in Varadero and was disappointed. (I've been to Mexico, Jamaica and DR so maybe that's why). The beaches are amazing. It was the food for me. I'm such a picky eater. I starved for a week. I ate at a restaurant in Havana which was great. Resort food was just bland. Are you set on Cuba?

Profile picture of Janine

Janine

kind of. Been to Mexico too many times, never DR. maybe I'll look into that not sure if it's that cheap. I haven't been on a vacation in 4 years so want good weather, pool and things to do, food isn't the biggest factor, as I've heard it sucks down there.

Profile picture of Patricia

Patricia

Heck go to Cuba then. DR is so expensive. At least it was when we went last year. 4 isn't all that bad if you don't care about food. Just honestly bring granola bars and stuff like that and you'll have a blast. How can you go wrong with sun, sand and beer?

Profile picture of Janine

Janine

thanks, good idea, bring snacks to survive, they have fruit and veggies and probably hot sauce.. I'll be fine. So I guess the star won't matter then
well at least 3

Profile picture of Carly

Carly

Janine I'm a vegetarian and found the fruit and vegetables in my five-star resort AWFUL. Almost all the vegetables were canned, and the fresh stuff was gross.

I'm with Patricia. A 5 star in Cuba is a Mexican 3 star, you go below that and it's not good. .

Janine food is
Mediocre and repetitive in Cuba at
Resorts. However, the beaches cannot be beat and that's what keeps us going back. It's easy enough to hop on the bus and head into varadero for some good eats. A couple of our fav places are "la fondue - cordon blue and cheese fondue!, "casa de la meil" for a great quick lunch (flat bread pizza - honey and onion is my fav!), or "la gruta" in josone park for a fabulous lobster dinner. About $20-25 CUC out of the shell and butterflied

Natasha, why don't you suggest Cuba?

I've never been to Cuba but have always used westjet vacations for all of our all inclusive travel. Their prices have always been the same as any discount travel place. Love having a canadian company to contact if any issues arise (which we have never had to utilize).

Varadero is awesome. Good is great. Just go to five star. Can't go wrong

Cayo Santa Maria is amazing white powder sand beach, Varadero is nice as well, but if you are on a limited budget and plan on just staying at the resort the beaches are way nicer in Cayo Santa Maria. If booking Cuba don't expect good food or comfy beds, even from a 5 star, it's still a communist country. Go for the scenery and the people.

The sad part is the Castros still get all the money with those resorts and the people in bad and worst living conditions...

I'm heading back there on December 2nd for my 6th trip there - Varadero's beaches are amazing - read reviews and take some of it with a grain of salt. Be prepared that a typical 5 star hotel there, are honestly more like a 3 star. I have always had an amazing time there and never have had any issues ! A day trip to Havana is amazing! Remember where you are, enjoy the scenery, the music, the locals and just enjoy your time there. Food even at the best of hotels is not going to be spectacular or what you are use to, take it in stride and enjoy!

I never stayed in a resort when I went to Cuba. But out of all the different countries I have been to it turned out to be one of the safest and friendliest places I have been to as well as it is beautiful !!! I hope you enjoy!!

Been 6 times and love it - Heading Nov for a week - The hotels are all the same for the most part. Get a hotel with a 24 hour bar and on the beach and you will be fine.

have been to cuba several times, we stayed at the playa costa verde (4*) in holguin twice and would return again. We've also done several other all-inclusive trips to Mexico, Jamaica and Dominican. We love the cuban people one of the reasons we go back. The resort rooms might not be as fancy as other places wwe have been but we've never had any issues. you might not have granite counter tops and flat screen tvs but i guess it depends how picky you are, those things are not why I go on vacation. As long as it's clean i have food and drink and nice people i'm happy. People say the food sucks. I always manage to gain weight down there and always find stuff i like. We always use west jet Vacations for our all-inclusives. Always get great rates and have never had any issues.

If you like beautiful ocean and beaches- varadero or islands; If you like snorkelling - Jibacoa! Reefs are super awesome there and this area is close to Havana (1 hour drive ish). I liked the food actually, lots of variety of seafood (liked food better then in Mexico)

I've been to Cuba 4 times and back to the same resort twice in Varadero. I would recommend Melia Veradero. Myself and my husband have been back there twice and never had any issues. We also had our wedding there in March and had 30 guests and everyone had a great time.
