Question:

Hello lovely people,
We would like to go to Nova Scotia and Newfoundland for 2 weeks in August. We are into hiking, camping, sea kayaking...all the outdoor fun

1. Other than Gros Morne, Cape Breton, any other national parks and beautiful trails would you recommend to hike on? We are quite fit and can do 8-10 hours hike per day.
2. How many days would you suggest to stay in each park?
3. Which airport would you suggest to fly into?
4. Any other cool things to do and see?
Thank you so much!
Shirley

Gros morne is nice, but it doesn't hold a candle to the east coast trail. Look up the spout Newfoundland on YouTube and do that trail for fun. Through hiked it in August and went to gros morne after. East coast trail was 100% better

If you can, go a month earlier to catch the whales, bird mating season, etc. You'll be happy to find out that nl is 3 weeks or so behind mainland for fruits, so if you do go in August you'll be eating a ton of blueberries and other ground fruits

Feel free to pm me if you want more info, we went for 3 weeks and spent it all in Newfoundland

I would recommend staying at Murphy's Camping on the Ocean in N.S. They do a free muscle boil on the open fire at night and chartered boat rides in the morning. It was the best part of my trip at east last year!

We honeymooned in the Highlands. Fishing Cove was about an 8km hike into an abandoned fishing cove - beautiful.
Another vote for Kejimikujik National Park. So many opportunities for canoeing - multiple day trips. So peaceful and underappreciated. I've rarely encountered other people once we hit the water.
Cape Chignecto Provincial Park in NS is lovely. I think its a 56 km loop with sites for tenting and a couple cabins. We did that one in 3 days too.
Cape Split is nice but popular (I like to avoid crowds).

Stumbled across Victoria Park in little Truro, NS on a trip last summer. Highly recommend spending an afternoon there! Quite easy hiking trails, beautiful little waterfalls, and it was free! Truly a hidden gem - it was crazy to think the park was in the city.

I grew up in NS and my must do's are:
1. Cabot Trail in Cape Breton.
2. Kejimkujik is great for camping, hiking, swimming...I used to spend my summers there growing up.
3. KayakHalifax if you plan on spending any time there. Point Pleasant Park is a nice place for a hike right in Halifax too.
4. If you want to experience an east coast pub in Halifax go to The Lower Deck:)

Tablelands in Gros Morne...Norris point is also beautiful. Cow Head is another nice one.
If you're heading to the east side of NL, Dildo is actually one of the most beautiful little seaside communities I've ever been to. Totally picturesque. The east coast trail is lovely as well. And beautiful Bonavista

How long are you planning to spend in NL? Two weeks is quite short for NS and NL but not impossible. Gros Morne Park will need at least 3 days. You might decide NS and just the west coast of NL for this trip. Going up the northern peninsula would also be amazing. I would love to chat with you more if you like. I'm a proud Newfoundlander and just

Hey! So I just planned a whole trip to the east coast as I am pumped to be screeched and cheers to patty Murphy. I'm actually driving to nova scotia from Toronto, spending a night in Ottawa, then Moncton and hitting up a micro brewery there, then pei for a night then Nova Scotia. I'm taking the ferry to Newfoundland then flying home from there.
I am going for George st fest and as Susan can attest as a Newfie herself it'll be a ball! I hear fabulous things. While in Newfoundland, I'm hoping to find an air bnb as I want to absorb as much of a local feel as possible!

There is a trail called the Skerwink in Trinity NFLD. It is not a long trail but the scenery is fabulous. Also, make sure you see the Trinity Pageant - play that takes you through the history of Trinity while walking through the town with the performers - check the times so you don't miss it! Also, check the iceberg watch website- we went to St Anthony a few years age when the Peterman Ice Island just arrived and the bay was littered with icebergs in August-it was truly amazing!

Outdoor Adventures in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland

Hello Shirley,

Nova Scotia and Newfoundland are outdoor enthusiasts' paradises, offering breathtaking natural landscapes, rugged coastlines, and countless opportunities for hiking, camping, and sea kayaking. Here are some recommendations to help you plan your two-week adventure:

1. Other than Gros Morne and Cape Breton, Recommended National Parks and Hiking Trails:

  • Keji Seaside Adjunct (Nova Scotia): This coastal section of Kejimkujik National Park offers stunning seaside trails, including the renowned Seaside Adjunct Trail, a challenging 8.2 km loop with breathtaking coastal views.
  • Fundy National Park (New Brunswick): While not in Nova Scotia or Newfoundland, Fundy National Park is a must-visit destination for its iconic Fundy Coastal Trail, offering jaw-dropping views of the world's highest tides.
  • Terra Nova National Park (Newfoundland): Situated on the eastern coast of Newfoundland, Terra Nova National Park boasts a diverse landscape of coastal trails, including the scenic Coastal Trail and the challenging Outport Trail.

2. Suggested Number of Days in Each Park:

  • Gros Morne National Park: 3-4 days to explore the park's highlights, including the iconic Western Brook Pond and Gros Morne Mountain.
  • Cape Breton Highlands National Park: 3-4 days to hike the famous Skyline Trail and explore the Cabot Trail.
  • Keji Seaside Adjunct: 1-2 days to hike the Seaside Adjunct Trail and enjoy the coastal scenery.
  • Fundy National Park: 2-3 days to hike the Fundy Coastal Trail and explore the park's other attractions.
  • Terra Nova National Park: 2-3 days to tackle the coastal trails and experience the park's natural wonders.

3. Recommended Airport:

For your itinerary, it would be most convenient to fly into Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ) in Nova Scotia. From there, you can rent a car and begin your journey through Nova Scotia before crossing over to Newfoundland.

4. Other Cool Things to Do and See:

  • Sea Kayaking: Both Nova Scotia and Newfoundland offer excellent sea kayaking opportunities. Consider guided tours or rentals to explore the rugged coastlines and look for whales, seabirds, and other marine life.
  • Coastal Drives: The Cabot Trail in Cape Breton and the Irish Loop in Newfoundland are scenic coastal drives that provide stunning vistas and opportunities to explore charming coastal communities.
  • Whale Watching: Newfoundland is a prime location for whale watching tours, where you may spot various species, including humpback whales, orcas, and minke whales.
  • Historic Sites: Visit historic sites like the Fortress of Louisbourg in Cape Breton, a reconstructed 18th-century French fortress, or Signal Hill in St. John's, Newfoundland, where the first transatlantic wireless signal was received.

With two weeks, you'll have ample time to immerse yourself in the natural beauty and outdoor adventures of these incredible Atlantic provinces. Enjoy your trip, and don't hesitate to reach out if you need any further assistance!
