Need Ideas for Solo Travel in Nanaimo, Vancouver, and Beyond

Question:

Profile picture of Roger

Roger

Looking for suggestions. Am travelling alone. I have 3 weeks of holidays in december as of Dec 12. Am flying into Nanaimo from Calgary. Am thinking to spend 1 week in Nanaimo. 1 week in Vancouver. I am looking for another spot/location for 1 week — my third and final week — other than Victoria. Any suggestions?

I've heard that Tofino and Ucelet and surrounding areas are absolutely beautiful and worthy of 1 week. If you're thinking of leaving canada, it's my understanding that Cuba and Costa Rico are beautiful and have low-ish covid cases.

I would do a week in or around Osoyoos

Ucluelet & Tofino! Go up and see the ocean storms. My favourite place in the summer but heard it’s great to see the storms on the ocean!

We had booked Tofino for our honeymoon 2 weeks ago. But they asked us to cancel because of Alberta's high numbers. Just look into that first!

Kalia Larsen - It’s crazy out here!
I’m on the Island.. I see so many with no masks (not saying whether you should wear or not
), tons of people in large crowds & having parties! And their numbers are rising! And yet, they don’t like an Albertan to book at Tofino? Sigh! Just sayin’!

Diane I totally understand. Once we have our official wedding inperson reception (when everything is over) and a real honeymoon we hope to actually come to Tofino. I fully believe in keeping everybody safe!

Tofino is neat around Christmas. I spent time there one Christmas. You can even surf at that time of the year! Salt Spring or the Sunshine Coast are quieter at that time of the year, but also lovely.

Roger The-Rabbit 100%. It is such a relaxing, good for the soul place. It’s small. But just enough to keep you going.
Victoria is a wonderful city to visit as well. Much more to do. Also much busier.
Tofino will always hold a special place in my heart.

David thank you for writing back. Some spots are not so great for a lone traveler. So your feedback is encouraging. I love Victoria. Have been there a few times. I may pop over for a day. But will focus on island spots for this trip. If you have any tips of places to stay in tofino lemme know. I canceled my airbnb account so it would need to be hotels or a direct person connection.

Roger The-Rabbit I totally understand. I travel alone often. The island is very laid back as you know. I feel you’ll be just fine.
I am just starting work, but will write a bit more later:)

I absolutely love Salt Spring Island! There are several options for ferries from Vancouver Island. There are lots of terrific accommodations there, great restaurants, coffee shops, breweries, wineries - as well as beautiful scenery and amazing walks/hikes. It is a magical place any time of year!

Take a car and take the ferries to the outlying islands. They all have something to offer. Just remember Tofino will be in their winter months and not everything will be open.

You may want to hold off booking anything as provinces just started changing regulations again to prevent the recent increase of numbers. I dealt with trying to get flight credits etc and it was a pain.

Roger

Kristen I really appreciate you! Am seeing this now too

Roger The-Rabbit all the western provinces just started changes this past week. And who knows what dec will be like. If you can plan but hold off on booking (or book with full cancellation and refund) may be wise.

Solo Adventure: Exploring British Columbia's Hidden Gems in December

Traveling alone can be a liberating experience, allowing you to embrace the freedom of solitude and immerse yourself in new adventures at your own pace. With three weeks of holiday time in December, starting from the 12th, your journey from Calgary to Nanaimo presents a wealth of opportunities to explore the stunning landscapes and vibrant culture of British Columbia.

Your plan to spend one week in Nanaimo and another in Vancouver is an excellent start, allowing you to experience the contrasting charms of a charming island city and a cosmopolitan metropolis. However, for your third and final week, consider venturing beyond the well-trodden path of Victoria and discover some of British Columbia's hidden gems.

Tofino: A Coastal Paradise

Nestled on the rugged western coast of Vancouver Island, Tofino is a true natural wonder. This picturesque town offers a unique blend of outdoor adventures and laid-back charm. Spend your days exploring the pristine beaches, hiking through ancient rainforests, or trying your hand at surfing the Pacific waves. In the evenings, cozy up by the fireplace in one of Tofino's charming accommodations and savor the fresh seafood and local cuisine.

Whistler: Winter Wonderland

If you're seeking an invigorating winter experience, consider spending your third week in Whistler. This world-renowned ski resort is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, offering exceptional skiing and snowboarding opportunities in the breathtaking Coast Mountains. Even if you're not a skier, Whistler offers a plethora of activities, including snowshoeing, dog sledding, and relaxing in the rejuvenating outdoor spas.

Salt Spring Island: Tranquil Escape

For a more serene and laid-back experience, consider exploring Salt Spring Island, located in the Strait of Georgia. This picturesque island is a haven for artists, foodies, and nature lovers alike. Explore the island's charming artisan markets, indulge in farm-to-table cuisine, and hike through the tranquil forests and coastal trails. Salt Spring Island offers a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, allowing you to recharge and connect with nature.

No matter which destination you choose for your third week, British Columbia promises an unforgettable solo adventure. Embrace the freedom of solitary travel, immerse yourself in the stunning natural landscapes, and create memories that will last a lifetime.
