We did it from Hsuvik in October, but actually saw better in Reykavik. All depends on atmospheric conditions at the moment, so ya never really know how it's going to pan out.

How far out of Reykjavik did you have to go?

We drove around Iceland. But if you only in Reykjavik from the airport to Reykjavik is about 40 min...within the area outside of the airport there are some cottages that are for rental. You could get a place there which you can see really well. If not, you just have to drive away from Reykjavik city just for 5 to 10 lin...find an area that does not have a lot of city lights.

Download the Aurora tracker app. Most places in Reykjavik have access to wifi. You can track down which night has more activities or possibilities to see the northern lights.

This is where we went since we were staying in Seltjarnarnes. November 15th-24th 2017.It was amazing how much we could see. It was a bit busy some nights because it is so accessible to everyone but it was nice we didn't have to go far from our house/Reykjavik.
We also drove 2-3 other places 45 mins one way each on different nights and stayed late into the night and saw nothing. When we returned to our house (2 mins from the lighthouse) we got a show. So from then on we just kept going back there.

Make it out to Jökulsarlón though. You get to see seals lounging and the colors of the glaciers are so beautiful. Diamond beach is stunning and right across the street.

Northern Lights Road Trip to Siglufjörður: Tips and Advice

Driving to Siglufjörður in northern Iceland to witness the mesmerizing Northern Lights is an unforgettable experience. However, proper planning and preparation are crucial to make the most of your journey. Here are some valuable tips to consider:

Best Time to Visit

The Northern Lights are typically visible from late August to mid-April, with the peak season being around the equinoxes in September and March. Late September is an excellent time to visit Siglufjörður as the nights are longer, and the weather is generally more stable compared to the winter months.

Route and Road Conditions

The drive from Reykjavík to Siglufjörður takes approximately 6-7 hours, covering a distance of around 400 kilometers. The main road, Route 1 (Ring Road), is well-maintained and paved. However, be prepared for occasional narrow, winding sections, especially as you approach Siglufjörður.

Pro Tip:

Check the weather forecast and road conditions before your trip. Iceland's weather can be unpredictable, and some roads may be closed due to snow or adverse conditions.

Accommodation and Amenities

Siglufjörður is a small town, but it offers several accommodation options, including hotels, guesthouses, and Airbnb rentals. Book your accommodation well in advance, especially during the peak Northern Lights season. Additionally, make sure to pack warm clothing, as temperatures can drop significantly at night.

Northern Lights Viewing

Siglufjörður is an excellent location for Northern Lights viewing due to its northern location and minimal light pollution. However, keep in mind that clear skies are essential for optimal viewing conditions. Consider joining a guided Northern Lights tour or check with your accommodation for recommendations on the best viewing spots.

Insider Tip:

Download a Northern Lights forecast app or check online resources to stay updated on the Aurora activity levels and cloud cover conditions.

Other Activities in Siglufjörður

While the Northern Lights are the main attraction, Siglufjörður offers several other activities to explore during your visit. Take a stroll through the charming town and admire the colorful houses and historic buildings. Visit the Herring Era Museum to learn about the town's fishing heritage, or hike to the nearby Tindastóll mountain for panoramic views.

Remember, a road trip to Siglufjörður is an adventure, and flexibility is key. Embrace the unpredictable weather and enjoy the journey as much as the destination. Safe travels and happy Northern Lights hunting!
