It seems a million years ago that we went, we bought an up to date copy of lonely planet and it was incredibly accurate with it's advice and recommendations. The books seemed unbiased as well. You can always start with that?? We also waited and paid for our safari in local currency and saved a lot of $$.

I flew from London, UK to Nairobi and then bused to Arusha then over landed from Arusha to CapeTown and took my time on a tour with African Trails. We also paid for our safari once we arrived everywhere. Sorry I can't be much more help.
