Are there any other Caribbean-type places you'd recommend? (Not Cuba)

Puerto rico , its not as cheap as DR but its beautiful and affordable than the other 2 options you were asking about. You could do Belize or Costa Rica those are beautiful places as well. On the Caribbean side of Costa Rica there is a place called Puerto viejo its small but beautiful and affordable with lots of Beaches

I absolutely LOVE Puerto Viejo but can't have that flight. Can't fly to Belize either. Has to be a Westjet destination that's not too busy.

If you like island life, fly to cancun and take the ferry over to Isla Mujeres. Very nice, affordable, island folk are super

Jamaica isn't hideously expensive but I would choose to visit the DR over Jamaica.

DR has outstanding beaches, we were on Punta Cana side with white soft sand.

Probably DR, I don't think the other places offer all inclusive which really reduces costs.

Almost every island in the caribbean offers all-inclusive & generally are the most cost effective places to go. Hawaii doesn't have all-inclusives however compared to the caribbean islands it isn't that bad if you rent a condo or house & do the cooking yourself...restaurants can be expensive, but in comparison to the Vancouver they are not really that expensive. If you have a car rental in Hawaii...which I highly recommend, you can eat at really amazing restaurants that are not tourist traps & the prices are reasonable.

Westjet flies to Curaçao. Beautiful Dutch owned island near Bermuda & Aruba.

I paid $1.13 for one US Dollar yesterday so I'd avoid Hawaii.

Your dollar would probably go further in the Dominican Republic.

Thanks to everyone who commented. We're leaning towards St Maarten because the Dominican seems to be better as a packaged holiday and the flights to St Maarten would be prohibitive to pay for ourselves any other time. I'm a little concerned about getting bored but who can complain when they're on a Caribbean island?

My $8 splendid blended mojito in St Maarten. Yup, it's expensive here, but it's good.

Where Would Your Dollar Go Farther?

When planning a vacation, it's important to consider not only the cost of flights, but also the cost of accommodations, food, activities, and overall expenses in your chosen destination. Let's compare St Maarten, Dominican Republic, and Hawaii to see where your dollar would go farther.

St Maarten

St Maarten is a beautiful Caribbean island known for its stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and duty-free shopping. While the cost of accommodations and dining can be on the higher side, you can find budget-friendly options if you look for guesthouses or local eateries. Activities like snorkeling, diving, and exploring the island can also add up, but there are ways to enjoy the island without breaking the bank.

Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is a popular destination for budget travelers, offering affordable accommodations, delicious local cuisine, and a wide range of activities. You can find all-inclusive resorts that include meals and drinks, as well as budget-friendly guesthouses and hostels. The cost of activities like exploring waterfalls, visiting historical sites, and enjoying the beaches is relatively low compared to other destinations.

Hawaii

Hawaii is known for its natural beauty, lush landscapes, and unique culture. However, it is also one of the most expensive destinations in the United States. Accommodations, dining, and activities can be pricey, especially on popular islands like Oahu and Maui. While there are budget-friendly options available, Hawaii tends to be more expensive overall compared to St Maarten and the Dominican Republic.

Conclusion

Based on the cost of accommodations, dining, and activities, your dollar would likely go farther in the Dominican Republic compared to St Maarten and Hawaii. With affordable options for accommodations, dining, and activities, you can enjoy a budget-friendly vacation in the Dominican Republic without sacrificing the beauty and culture of the destination.
