Depending on who your provider is you can get a $2 - $4 dollar add on and you are only charged that fee when you access cellular data oversees. Telus, Bell, Koodo (Not sure about Rogers) also offer wifi calling on many of their plans and wifi is readily available all over Europe. I used a combo of these two options when I was in Germany last August.

Sadly I am on a corporate plan so I don’t have the option for any add on’s, but that’s great to know that wifi is readily available.

Jaxsy on a corporate plan you can still install the wifi calling option. And perhaps if you ask your supervisor they will approve the overseas plan. With mine is was only charged the fee when I took my phone out of airplane mode and accessed my cell which was rare.

I lived there and used Three. £20 Go Roam pay as you go gives you 12GB data and unlimited calls texts. Works every country (except Canada) without any roaming charges. Highly recommend and they have good customer service if you need. Can get them at airport or any “3” kiosks

Three SIMs are sold at Heathrow terminals in Arrivals for sure. They also have vending machines (I think). Wherever you end up in England just google Three store in your location and there will be one. They are all around, kind of like Koodo here in Alberta....

I just use WiFi. Then what’s app and FaceTime. I use Maps.me for travel-as long as you download region when you have WiFi you can find any address or route without data.

Sharon awesome! I will download that app!

Are you by chance flying klm? They have preloaded international SIM cards that work around the world in their in flight magazine.
Otherwise England's SIM cards probably your best bet.
Easier to set up when instructions are in English

Tanya ahhh sadly we are flying with westjet. That is pretty awesome though, great idea! And yes, English will be much easier haha.

Buying a SIM Card for Your European Adventure

Traveling to multiple countries in Europe can be an exciting experience, but staying connected can be a challenge. To ensure you have reliable data access during your trip to England, Austria, Netherlands, and Belgium, you'll need to purchase a SIM card. Here's what you need to know:

Best Places to Buy a SIM Card

  1. Airport on Arrival: Many major airports in Europe have kiosks or stores where you can purchase a SIM card upon arrival. This is a convenient option, but prices may be slightly higher.
  2. Mobile Provider Stores: Once you reach your destination, you can visit physical stores of popular mobile providers in each country. This way, you can compare prices, data plans, and get assistance from the staff.
  3. Convenience Stores and Supermarkets: Many convenience stores and supermarkets sell prepaid SIM cards from various providers. This option can be more cost-effective, but you may have limited assistance with setup and activation.

Recommended Providers

While there are numerous mobile providers in each country, here are some recommended options based on network coverage, data plans, and customer reviews:

  • England: EE, Vodafone, and Three are popular choices with extensive coverage and competitive data plans.
  • Austria: A1, Magenta (formerly T-Mobile), and Drei are reliable providers with good network coverage across the country.
  • Netherlands: KPN, Vodafone, and T-Mobile are widely used and offer various data packages.
  • Belgium: Proximus, Orange, and BASE are the major providers with strong networks and affordable data plans.

Tips for Buying a SIM Card

  • Check if your phone is unlocked and compatible with the frequencies used in the countries you'll be visiting.
  • Research and compare data plans and pricing from different providers before making a purchase.
  • Consider your data needs and choose a plan accordingly (e.g., social media, navigation, streaming).
  • Ask about any additional fees or charges, such as activation or roaming fees.
  • Ensure you have the necessary documents (passport, proof of address, etc.) if required by the provider.

By following these tips and considering the recommended providers, you'll be able to stay connected and make the most of your European adventure while avoiding excessive roaming charges.
