Make sure your phone is unlocked. I did this once and it wasn't worth the hassle (in USA) I had numerous issues calling/texting Canada and it was so slow.

I just turned my phone on airplane mode and used the wifi at the hotel... was barely on it being in paradise.

Why would they have SIM cards at the airport? lol... you'll need to hit telcel or AT&T for a sim card.

Call your cell phone company, many offer Mexico for $10 per day. You only pay for the days you use. Incoming texts are free. Manage the rest through WiFi. Sometimes this is the easier and cheaper way to go

I did this for Hawaii

You can get a SIM card at any telcel store. There really is no cheaper way to go than getting a mexico SIM card. For $100 pesos which is around $8 cdn you get unlimited texting calling to Mexico US and Canada as well as usually 1G of data and thats good for usually 20-30days.

In some airports in Mexico they do have a little cart from some phone companies. It works great. Way cheaper than here. Just make sure your phone is unlocked

Yes get yourself a SIM card! telcel has the best coverage but AT&T is great if you use a lot of social media. Airports really should sell these more!!

why not just use the travel package that comes with your phone? Most companies now have packages where for a small fee per day (to a max amount of days) your phone behaves like its still in canada. you dont have to worry about extra roaming charges or anything like that. much easier and no hassle

We have a business phone and they charge way more than a personal phone for the same thing

We are gouged so hard on all cell service. Get unlocked. Get a sim. A month will cost you what your carrier wants for a day.

No Canadian plan would ever be cheaper than getting a plan in Mexico. Truly is not a hassle if your phone is unlocked. We spend months in Mexico and have never had issues with their coverage. What I.pay $100+ a month for here in Canada costs $10-16 a month there.

i never said cheaper just easier. some people dont feel like leaving their hotels, etc to go get a sim card. for me, pay $7 per day to turn my phone on maybe 2 days of my vacation to check in back home will always be the better plan. if you are there months at a time and want it on every day then sure, get the sim card that makes sense. but for the average one to two weeker just using the travel package is easier.

So how does that work? When you get a SIM card in Mexico do you have a new number?

Profile picture of Kam

Kam

Dean Yes, new number. When back in Canada put your old sim back in.

Our local carriers aren't allowed to charge to unlock your phone anymore can they?

That's true.

Just call the Canadian carrier and in most cases it takes no time at all. However I did three phones and one we could not get the correct unlock code to save our life. Live chat can be faster then calling with some company's

I arrived yesterday and went to telcel beside Wal-Mart. telcel is the only one that works at my sister's place. Most corner stores also sell SIM's however the two I tried didn't sell telcel (a little more expensive but works more places) it was 79 pesos for the SIM and 500 for 4 gig of data that lasts 30 days. Unlimited Facebook and what's app (not video tho). 300 gets you 1.5 gig that last 33 days.

Also I should mention if you go to telcel go talk to the person inside the door at white desk first. They will direct you to go to a window number. They mean the numbered desks not the cashier windows.

Getting a SIM Card at Puerto Vallarta Airport

If you're planning to visit Puerto Vallarta and want to stay connected with your mobile device, you might be wondering if you can get a SIM card at the airport. The good news is that it's possible to purchase a SIM card and obtain a local Mexican number right after you land.

SIM Card Availability

Upon arriving at the Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR), you'll find several kiosks and small shops offering SIM cards from various Mexican carriers like Telcel, AT&T Mexico, and Movistar. These kiosks are typically located in the arrivals area, just after you clear customs and immigration.

Installation Process

The installation process for a SIM card is relatively straightforward. At the kiosk or shop, you'll need to provide your passport or other valid identification document. The staff will then assist you in selecting a prepaid plan that suits your needs and budget.

Once you've purchased the SIM card, the staff can guide you through the installation process. They'll provide you with a tiny tool to open the SIM card tray on your phone, allowing you to insert the new SIM card. If you're unsure about the process or encounter any difficulties, don't hesitate to ask for assistance.

Plan Options and Costs

The plan options and costs can vary depending on the carrier and the type of plan you choose. Generally, you'll find prepaid plans ranging from a few days to a month or more. These plans typically include a combination of data, voice minutes, and text messages.

It's advisable to compare the different options and choose a plan that aligns with your anticipated usage during your stay in Puerto Vallarta. Keep in mind that you may need to top up your balance periodically if you exhaust your initial plan's allowance.

Benefits of a Local SIM Card

Having a local Mexican SIM card offers several advantages during your visit to Puerto Vallarta:

  • Avoid hefty international roaming charges from your home carrier
  • Access to reliable mobile data for navigation, social media, and internet browsing
  • Ability to make local calls and send text messages at affordable rates
  • Stay connected with friends, family, and travel companions

Overall, getting a SIM card at the Puerto Vallarta Airport is a convenient and cost-effective solution for staying connected during your visit to this beautiful Mexican destination.
