We rented a car in Sardinia. I don’t recommend. Posted speed limit was 50 everyone was flying by at 80+ km/hr. We didn’t know if we should keep up with traffic and risk getting pulled over or do the speed limit and risk an accident. It was scary either way. We parked the rental after an hour on the road. Not worth it for us. Was hoping the island would be laid back compared to Rome’s drivers but that was definitely not the case.

Was that near one of the larger towns? I drove all over Sardinia and don't recall anything unusual about the traffic. Generally speaking, there wasn't much traffic to contend with. But this was in early October. Sardinia gets *very* busy in the summer months as everyone in Europe heads there. I'm sure that changes things.

Chris yes near Olbia in July so maybe that does make a difference. I hadn’t read anything about the traffic in my research prior to going either so we were quite surprised.

We’ve done Italy with our kids! We did Venice, Rome, Liguria (Cinque Terre), Positano and time in Tuscany, just out of Florence which is great for branching out to see San Gimignano, Pisa, Lucca and Sienna. Definitely use the train in between, so efficient, cost effective and scenery is great. We did rent a car in Tuscany but you need to be a super confident driver and most cars are manual.

Car in Europe is NEVER the correct answer. The trains are easy and cheap …. Parking is neither. The hikes around Cinque Terre provide some amazing views and are relatively easy to do.

If you are going to Sardinia you'll need to rent a car. Train travel there is very limited.
