We rented a car in Sardinia. I don’t recommend. Posted speed limit was 50 everyone was flying by at 80+ km/hr. We didn’t know if we should keep up with traffic and risk getting pulled over or do the speed limit and risk an accident. It was scary either way. We parked the rental after an hour on the road. Not worth it for us. Was hoping the island would be laid back compared to Rome’s drivers but that was definitely not the case.

Sarah thank you! Super helpful!

Was that near one of the larger towns? I drove all over Sardinia and don't recall anything unusual about the traffic. Generally speaking, there wasn't much traffic to contend with. But this was in early October. Sardinia gets *very* busy in the summer months as everyone in Europe heads there. I'm sure that changes things.
Sarah
Chris yes near Olbia in July so maybe that does make a difference. I hadn’t read anything about the traffic in my research prior to going either so we were quite surprised.

We’ve done Italy with our kids! We did Venice, Rome, Liguria (Cinque Terre), Positano and time in Tuscany, just out of Florence which is great for branching out to see San Gimignano, Pisa, Lucca and Sienna. Definitely use the train in between, so efficient, cost effective and scenery is great. We did rent a car in Tuscany but you need to be a super confident driver and most cars are manual.

Car in Europe is NEVER the correct answer. The trains are easy and cheap …. Parking is neither. The hikes around Cinque Terre provide some amazing views and are relatively easy to do.
Cynthia
If you are going to Sardinia you'll need to rent a car. Train travel there is very limited.
Vera
Take the train or you can fly cheap within Europe

Italy with Kids: An Unforgettable Family Adventure
Ah, Italy! The land of history, art, and delectable cuisine. With 2.5 weeks to explore this remarkable country, you're in for an unforgettable family adventure. Here are my top recommendations for your Italian escapade:
1. Rome: The Eternal City
No trip to Italy is complete without visiting the vibrant capital, Rome. Marvel at the iconic Colosseum, throw coins into the Trevi Fountain, and let your kids unleash their inner gladiators. Don't miss the Vatican City, where you can admire St. Peter's Basilica and the stunning Sistine Chapel.
2. Florence: The Renaissance Gem
Florence is a treasure trove of art and architecture. Stroll through the historic Piazza della Signoria, marvel at Michelangelo's David, and climb the iconic Duomo for breathtaking city views. Your kids will love exploring the Boboli Gardens, a sprawling oasis of greenery and sculptures.
3. Venice: The City on Water
Enchanting Venice is a must-visit for its labyrinth of canals, gondola rides, and stunning piazzas. Meander through the charming streets, cross the iconic Rialto Bridge, and treat your family to a delightful mask-making workshop – a quintessential Venetian experience.
4. Cinque Terre: Coastal Bliss
For a taste of Italy's picturesque coastline, head to the Cinque Terre. These five colorful villages perched on cliffs offer stunning hiking trails, pristine beaches, and a laid-back atmosphere perfect for families. Explore the charming alleys, soak up the sun, and savor the local seafood delicacies.
Transportation: Train vs. Car
Italy boasts an excellent train network, making it convenient to hop from one city to another. With kids in tow, the train might be the more relaxing option, allowing you to sit back and enjoy the scenic landscapes. However, renting a car could provide more flexibility for exploring off-the-beaten-path destinations and smaller towns.
Bonus Tip: Sardinia
If you have time, consider extending your trip to the beautiful island of Sardinia. With its crystal-clear waters, pristine beaches, and rich cultural heritage, Sardinia offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of the mainland. Look into budget airlines like EasyJet or Ryanair for affordable flights to and from the island.
Wherever you go, embrace the Italian spirit of "la dolce vita" – the sweet life – and create cherished memories with your adventurous little ones!

Headed to Italy for 2.5 weeks end of March to Easter. Flights booked to Amsterdam. Will be travelling with my adventurous 6 & 8 year old. Suggestions of 3-4 spots to hit? Train vs car? Looking for outdoor casual family fun! Will book easyjet/ryan air flights in & out of Italy or possibly Sardinia? TIA!
