Hi I just bought my tickets to fly to Kathmandu beginning on October to independently trek to Mt Everest base camp. But I will be traveling before also from May, so will need to have things ready by then. Has anyone else trekked to Mt Everest base camp solo? I'm looking for any tips on doing it alone, and how to get from Kathmandu to Lukla.

You can buy your tickets at TribhuvanAirport from Kathmandu to lukla and I suggest you as being tourist it’s about 9-15 days hike and must take a guide or any accompanying partner who knows the route .

Furba yah that's what I thought but after doing some research I found that you can't fly from Kathmandu to Lukla anymore because the airport was getting too busy. And instead you need to take a shuttle bus from the airport.

I'm a experience hiker and mountain climber. So that's why I'm deciding to go on my own.

I think you can fly from Kathmandu to Lukla by helicopter. But by plane the airport is a few hours away. One caution is that if the weather is bad you could end up waiting in the shuttle town for a couple to few days. Which sucks. I opted for the helicopter and it seemed the more reliable option.
If weather is good I think it would be quite easy to do the trek on your own. But when weather rolls in- and it dogs or storms over (which happens in minutes) I was suuuuper grateful for a guide. Also for booking accommodation. It can be hard as a single person in high season because most rooms are doubles and if they aren’t full, they are losing money by letting a single stay. Those were my experiences! But it’s a fantastic trek! Enjoy!

Courtney thank you so much for the tips. I will definitely look into a helicopter ride. I heard October can be quite busy, but that would be good so I don't get lost going alone.

Trekking to Mt Everest Base Camp Solo

Congratulations on purchasing your tickets to Kathmandu and planning to trek to Mt Everest base camp! It's definitely an exciting adventure that requires careful preparation and planning. While trekking solo can be a rewarding experience, it's important to be well-prepared and informed before embarking on this journey.

There are several things to consider when trekking to Mt Everest base camp solo. Here are some tips to help you along the way:

  1. Make sure you have the necessary permits and paperwork before starting your trek. This includes obtaining a TIMS card and Sagarmatha National Park permit.
  2. Plan your itinerary carefully and allow for acclimatization days to prevent altitude sickness. It's recommended to spend at least 2-3 days in Namche Bazaar for acclimatization.
  3. Stay hydrated and well-fed throughout your trek. Carry enough water and snacks to keep your energy levels up.
  4. Pack appropriately for the trek, including warm clothing, sturdy hiking boots, and a good quality sleeping bag. It's also important to have a first aid kit and any necessary medication.
  5. Stay in teahouses along the way for accommodation and meals. It's a good idea to book your accommodation in advance during peak trekking seasons.
  6. Be prepared for variable weather conditions and be flexible with your plans. The weather in the Himalayas can be unpredictable, so it's important to be prepared for all eventualities.

As for getting from Kathmandu to Lukla, the most common way is to take a domestic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. The flight takes around 30 minutes and offers stunning views of the Himalayas. It's important to book your flight in advance, especially during peak trekking seasons.

Overall, trekking to Mt Everest base camp solo can be a challenging but rewarding experience. With proper preparation and planning, you can have a safe and enjoyable trek to one of the world's most iconic destinations.

Safe travels and enjoy your trek!
