Look into Eurorail passes.
I did a 3 month woth no plans, hopped on cheap flights going anywhere (used hopper app).

If you are in North America, head down to Ecuador and Peru, go across to Asia (lot's of choice there depending on your budget) New Zealand has many options for at least a month of hiking, nature, great coffee and beer (more expensive) then head to Eastern Europe, into Southern Europe, like Sicily and Southern Italy, Spain and Portugal. Depending on your budget, you can have a great time exploring without emptying your wallet!

Italy indonesia Hawaii france

I am at the end of a 3 month trip through Central America (Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Panamá) and I wish I had more time to have spent in each country! You could start in Mexico and travel South through Central America and then head into Columbia from Panamá and continue through South America!
Kerri
I have also done a 7 month stint in South East Asia (Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam), and it's amazing and cheap there too! I unfortunately missed out on the Philippines but I would definitely recommend going there too!
Azra
How much did that cost you? I’m trying to save for a stint there
Kerri
Azra which trip are you referring to?
Azra
Kerri south east Asia
Kerri
Azra I think around $5000 CAD but I can't really remember! I did the trip on my way home from a year in Australia so all the costs sort of got jumbled together! I did a lot of activities like scuba diving, and that's including all of my travel costs between each country!
Azra
Kerri amazing! Thank you! That’s actually my budget for three months so it may work. Excluding flights
Kerri
Azra no problem! You can get pretty cheap flights into Singapore and Bangkok, and then take local flights or land transportation from there
You can do SE Asia very cheap, or very expensive depending on how you choose to travel! Street food is cheap, hostels are cheap, and local busses are cheap! If you go to Western restaurants and fly everywhere it's more costly! You can also bargain everywhere which really comes in handy!
Karen
Thailand is cheap and Hong Kong is good too
Kelly
Look up Thomas Retreat in Sumatra in Indonesia’s jungle.. you can go hike and see the orangutan in the wild.. really cool really cheap and an amazing experience
Sarica
Tanzania Serengeti safari, hands down best experience ever

We trying to go in July. We want to fly but renting a car is so expensive.
Sarica
The drive from Gros Morne to L’anse aux Meadows is like something from those scenic car commercials. So worth it!

Am here in Newfoundland now. So spectacular! Breath taking views. Landscape is so diverse. On Fogo Island tonight.
Andy

Denise
Visit Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda!!!

If you want to meet people along the way with free room and board, check out WWOOF. It’s an international organization where you work 4-5 hours a day, 5 days a week on an organic farm. I naturally chose vineyards around the world with no regrets...and with plenty of free wine for dinner
. You can stay a week or a month or whatever. Worth googling. Also, don’t overlook South Africa and Kruger Park for safari or Cape Town scenery and food. Your money will go far in South Africa. Also worth checking out Bali (Ubud) and the Gigli Islands as well as Zanzibar. All safe, clean and good R&R
Celeste
For outdoor adventure and breathtaking landscapes, New Zealand is hard to beat.
Janis
Get yourself an around the world ticket with an alliance that visits the countries you wish to see. So much cheaper.
Kerri
I've never looked into this. Any recommendations on alliances that do this?
Janis
Kerri All the alliances have around tickets
Kerri
Janis sorry bad wording, any personal recommendations?
Janis
Kerri It depends what countries you wish to visit. I always suggest to get a map and plot out the countries you wish to visit. Then you can see the airlines that service those countries. Truthfully I sell mostly One World alliance ticket as that seems to work the best and have the best pricing. These are usually good for 12 months from first flight so that should work perfect for you.
Kerri
Janis awesome thanks! I never have travel plans so I have never looked into a RTW ticket but maybe I'll check out the one you mentioned! I just don't like being stuck to an itinerary or following rules haha
Janis
Kerri .. only rule is that you have to travel in one direction.
Lisa
Janis actually not all of them have that rule
Lisa
We used oneworld.com . Loved planning the itinerary ourselves!
Lisa
Star Alliance is the other big one that I know of...looks like they also offer self-planning online now

Our trip was 10 months, in 2012. Maybe you'll find inspiration in our blog streetsabroad.blogspot.com

We did find that the best parts were our work & volunteer experiences. It was pretty exhausting to travel all the time- nice to have some temporary homes. There are lots of websites where you can look for opportunities.
Patrick
Lisa I like that option. Could you send me some links. You can add me if you want.
Lisa
Patrick I found the opportunities varied a lot by country; and I suspect they've changed a lot in the past 6 years. I'd check travel forums (e.g. lonely planet, tripadvisor) for current advice.
Lisa
Also Couchsurfing.org was an amazing resource- not just for accommodation, but also for meetups & events.

although this one looks good, and includes a listing for one of our favourite groups- Maya Universe Academy in Nepal

Start by sitting down and deciding what the two of you are interested in. Why ask others? Everyone has different interests.

We used one world and booked our flights all heading east in 2009. We went to England, Greece, turkey, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Japan, Australia, NZ, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Peru and Ecuador! It took us 10 months and was amazing!!!You just need to look into land travel in between your flights - check out a map to get a rough idea. For example, we flew into Bangkok Thailand, but didn’t fly again for 4 months when we flew out of Beijing China. We traveled by train and bus all through Asia. We did the same in South America. All of the land travel is easy to do once you’re in the country. Just make sure you look into visa requirements before you go... some visas you need to have BEFORE you enter the country (India and China from what I remember) . Happy travels!!
