We stayed in Praiano and took the bus to along the coast- Positano, Amalfi. My favourite place to visit when we were there was Pompeii. Easy access from train.

We just returned from 2 weeks in Italy including Napoli, Amalfi, Positano and Rome. The crowds arrive in mid-June so you might plan your trip in late May or after everyone has returned home.
We drove everywhere, but took advantage of the hop-on buses in a few locations. We loved Revello and it's a must-see if you're in Positano. Take a hop-on bus with open seating on top - the trip through the lemon orchards is magical.
Capri is very crowded, but we took a private boat that toured the area and gave us 3 hours to explore. From what I understand staying on the island gives you a chance to enjoy it when all the foot/boat traffic returns home.
When we return we'll probably keep mostly centrally located. Your budget will drive your decision on what location, but all of the coastal towns are within a 15-30 minute drive traffic depending on time of day.
We hiked Vesuvius - it's a good uphill walk. Take advantage of the taxis that drive from the lower parking lot to the foot of the trail. They're a couple of euros and keeps you from a 2km hike before your "real" hike up the volcano.

Hike up to Ravello. You won't be disapponted.

My wife and I stayed in Positano when we visited the Amalfi coast, and the highlight for us was the hike up to the "Path of the Gods" (Sentiero degli Dei). You can hike up to this breathtaking hike right from within Positano, and we didn't need to pay for any guides to take show us the way. http://amalficoasting.org/.../hiking-on-the-path-of-the...

Check out Hotel Marguerita in Praiano. We got a secluded room close to the owners apartment behind the hotel with a private balcony and sweeping views of the Mediterranean. Amazing staff, breakfast was great and included. Took the orange bus all up and down the coast. Sorrento and Positano were both beautiful. Praiano is close to Positano but a little quieter. Amalfi town was our least favourite. I wouldn't recommend staying there. Ravello is nice to explore for an afternoon .

I think that was the hotel we stayed at too. 10 years ago so couldn’t remember but highly recommended. I like how the owner walked around at breakfast and asked if and what we wanted for dinner.

Da Adolfo in Positano for lunch. We stayed in Positano as well and loved it...the other towns are easy to get to by bus. Definitely recommend Ravello for a day trip and Path of the Gods for hiking.

A Week on the Amalfi Coast in September
The Amalfi Coast is a breathtaking destination in Italy, offering stunning coastal scenery, charming towns, delicious cuisine, and plenty of outdoor activities. Here are some suggestions for a week-long visit in September, tailored to your preferences for hiking, biking, water activities, and avoiding large crowds.
Where to Stay
Positano is a great base for exploring the Amalfi Coast. It's a picturesque town with a relaxed atmosphere and fewer crowds than some of the other coastal towns. Consider staying in a villa or apartment in Positano or one of the nearby villages like Montepertuso or Nocelle. These smaller towns offer a more tranquil experience while still being within easy reach of Positano.
Things to Do
Hiking
The Amalfi Coast offers some fantastic hiking opportunities with breathtaking views. One of the highlights is the Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods), a challenging but rewarding hike that takes you along the cliffs with stunning vistas of the coastline. Another option is the hike to the summit of Monte Solaro on the island of Capri, offering panoramic views of the Bay of Naples.
Biking
Cycling along the winding coastal roads of the Amalfi Coast is an exhilarating experience. Consider renting a bike and exploring the smaller towns and villages at your own pace. The ride from Amalfi to Ravello is particularly scenic, with stunning views of the coastline and lemon groves.
Water Activities
With the beautiful Mediterranean Sea at your doorstep, there are plenty of water-based activities to enjoy. You can rent a boat or kayak and explore the hidden coves and grottos along the coast. Swimming and sunbathing at the beaches in Positano, Amalfi, or Ravello are also great options.
Capri
Capri is a beautiful island just off the Amalfi Coast, known for its rugged landscapes, luxury shopping, and glitzy atmosphere. While it can be crowded during peak season, September is a great time to visit when the crowds have thinned out. Take a day trip or spend a night or two on the island to explore its charming towns, hike the trails, and enjoy the stunning scenery.
Mount Vesuvius
As you mentioned, hiking up Mount Vesuvius is a fantastic experience. This active volcano offers incredible views of the Bay of Naples and the opportunity to explore the crater. It's a challenging hike, so be sure to wear appropriate footwear and bring plenty of water.
Where to Eat
The Amalfi Coast is a culinary paradise, known for its fresh seafood, locally grown produce, and delicious pasta dishes. Some recommended restaurants in Positano include La Terrazza, La Cambusa, and Ristorante Max. In Amalfi, try Taverna Buonvino or La Caravella. Don't forget to indulge in the famous limoncello, a lemon liqueur made from the region's famous lemons.
With its stunning scenery, outdoor activities, and culinary delights, the Amalfi Coast promises an unforgettable week-long adventure in September.

Places to stay, eat, and things to do for a week on the Amalfi Coast in September? We love to eat, hike and bike and be around the water- we don’t love huge crowds. We were thinking of hiking up Mt Vesuvius one day but don’t have any other plans. Not sure whether to stay in a couple places or just stay in one home base somewhere near Positano and do day trips. Also not sure whether we should visit Capri or not?
Thanks for the info!
