Of all the places to travel this is the best. RIU has a all inclusive. We rented a condo in San Jose and found private tour guide who took us to place that were not so touristy and far less costly. Really a great place to vaca.

Villa sol - small all inclusive and condos in playa hermosa near Liberia. I loved nye beach there. Went to allegro Papagayo in the same area and wouldn't recommend it if you like beach/ ocean - it's on a stagnant bay and not nice to swim in

Do not do all inclusive. The country is so beautiful and you will miss out on all the wonderful things you can do and see. We rented s car for a month and drove the whole country staying at bed and breakfasts most of the time. Was a wonderful experience for a couple in their 50's?

We got married there. Highly recommend Punta Leona. It's one of the only white sand beach and they have two on the property. We were there for a week and it was so private and quite. Very friendly, excellent food and awesome guides to the rainforest.

I've stayed at Riu Palace as well as Allegro Papagayo. Both have pluses and minuses. Riu is quite new they have another Riu next door that is very tropical as the Palace is not. More of a Las Vegas resort. Food was great in the Riu and the Allegro. Better swimming at the Riu and more options for bars. But lacks air once your are inside other than the sports bar and your room. Allegro has a granite type beach in a bay so at times the water is very shallow. Lots of wildlife at the Allegro. Monkeys every day on the beach. Plus birds and of course the lizards. A few times you could see dolphins swimming from the beach. It's going to depend on your budget and what comforts you like. Costa Rica is for sure a great safe place to travel to.

We rented an apartment at Playa Samara, and stayed at an awesome jungle lodge in the Arenal area. It is such a diverse country, it's worth it to stay in the jungle and out at the beach.

Depends what you are looking for. My husband wanted to mountain bike in Costa Rica (not an easy thing to arrange) so I found an all inclusive called Rio Perdido. They are in the middle of no where an hour east of Liberia so they had to be all-inclusive. However, the food, while good, was repetitive after 4 days. It is an adventure hotel with zip lines and tubing as well as mountain biking trails built by an expert. I would NOT recommend staying at an all inclusive unless you have to.

There are hot springs and walking trails as well. We did not participate in the Adventure opportunities. The accommodation is private cabins which are a bit of hike from the restaurant and bar so you have to be in fairly good shape!

We rented a vehicle. It is a small country so you can see a lot in a short time. The Pan American highway is a bit of a trip (a two lane road full of trucks) but if you travel in the middle of the day, it is doable. We were able to experience the beaches, turquoise waterfalls and the cloud forest of Rio Celeste (a must see) and the dry forests and volcanos near Bagaces. I agree with Cheryl Gibson - that is the way to see this beautiful country!

Have a look into Caravan Tours. Would highly recommend them if you want an all inclusive, stay in 4-5 star hotels, tour of most of the countryside, and reasonably prices. We did this one last year and would highly recommend it.
