Jenny
We go every year to the Mayan beautiful places to see and snorkelling is amazing. Take pesos I personally don't use bank machines in Mexico got burnt once just easier to avoid it
Teresa
I literally got off the plane from there...just get pesos or use the atms...there's no point in exchanging for USD....but American $ is accepted
Lori
Be careful if you're using bank or credit card: I was scammed earlier this year when the clerk clicked through the total charge to the insert pin # - turned out the amount was significantly more than the actual price - just make sure you confirm the amount

Pesos or American
Allison
Pesos 100% we get burned with usd
They take canadian we just got back a few weeks ago
Barb
In speaking to many mexicans, they will take most any currency but would prefer their own pesos. It costs them to much to exchange at their bank and so many don't have a bank account.
Allison
5th in playa isnt markets anymore they are all stores so we had no issues having said that though they do prefer pesos. Also if u use ur credit card make sure they charge u in peso not usd! They triied that alot with us so we would deal on a canadian price then make them charge us in pesos

I've always taken CND cash & exchanged to pesos at either the hotel or street cambio. Know your exchange rates & always count your money & get a receipt.
Kevin
Not sure how much cash you really need but you take lots of smaller peso bills to ensure you tip. Indeed, you can exchange at your hotel...that's not generally an issue. As well, I know you can use your debit card for cash withdrawal in pesos at man ABMs....
Gina
I would buy some pesos now

Traveling to the Mayan Riviera: The Best Currency and Amount to Take
If you're planning a week-long trip to the Mayan Riviera in January, it's essential to have the right currency and a sufficient amount to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. While a lot may have changed in Mexico since your last visit 11 years ago, the currency remains the same – the Mexican Peso (MXN).
The Mexican Peso (MXN)
The Mexican Peso is the official currency of Mexico and is widely accepted throughout the country, including the Mayan Riviera. It's recommended to carry a mix of cash and a debit/credit card during your trip. Cash is still king in many places, especially at smaller establishments, markets, and street vendors.
How Much to Take
The amount of cash to carry depends on your spending habits, planned activities, and accommodation. As a general guideline, it's advisable to have between $500 and $800 USD worth of Mexican Pesos for a week-long trip. This should cover your expenses for meals, transportation, activities, and souvenirs.
Here's a rough breakdown of how you might spend your cash:
- Accommodation: If not prepaid, budget around $100-$200 USD per night for a mid-range hotel or resort.
- Meals: Plan for $20-$40 USD per day for meals, depending on your dining preferences.
- Transportation: Taxis, shuttles, and rental cars can add up quickly. Budget $50-$100 USD for transportation.
- Activities: Allocate $100-$300 USD for activities like tours, water sports, and entrance fees.
- Souvenirs and miscellaneous expenses: Set aside $50-$100 USD for souvenirs, snacks, and other incidentals.
Tips for Handling Currency
- Exchange your currency at a reputable bank or currency exchange office before or upon arrival to get a better rate.
- Avoid exchanging money at airports or hotels, as they typically offer less favorable rates.
- Use ATMs affiliated with major banks to withdraw cash in Mexican Pesos if needed during your stay.
- Notify your bank or credit card company about your travel plans to avoid any issues with international transactions.
- Keep your cash and valuables secure, and be cautious of potential scams or pickpockets in crowded areas.
By having the right currency and a sufficient amount, you'll be well-prepared to fully experience the beautiful Mayan Riviera and all it has to offer. Enjoy your trip and create unforgettable memories!
