Have you considered Las Brisas in Huatulco, Mexico? Great family resort, calm shallow waters with snorkelling right on the beach, excellent customer service. Not the most inexpensive but we love it. Check out trip advisor for all the pros and cons...

We went to Los Cabos last year for 10 days, stayed at the Royal Solaris, beautiful there, but you are not suppose to swim there, they warn you on that. Hotel was clean, food was not the best there, alot of pork. Some of the rooms we had, had poor drainage in sinks. We took alot of extra tours, had alot of fun. Plan to go the Riviera Maya this year! They were all kind there, very safe, family place.

Puerto Vallarta is always my favorite

Been to all three areas multiple times - here's my summary short and sweet! Cancun - party town, hotels cramed together on short beach, Fiesta Americana Contessa (AI) however is a great deal. Riviera Maya - HUGE area, many hotel offerings, family friendly, wonderful beaches, somewhat remote (can take over 1.5 hours to get to your hotel from airport). Los Cabos - two resort areas (Cabos San Lucas [busy port town] and San Jose Del Cabo [quiet mission town]), family friendly, can't swim on most beaches, many many amazing AI resorts, condos, and hotels (love Barcelo, RIUs and like Royal Solaris). Frankly, you can't go wrong!!

Judy, what would you advise me where to stay at the Maya? I will have family with 2 younger children? I want the Best!

Kiran - Las Brisas does all inclusive and it's only about 30 minutes from the airport which beats the Mayan Riviera commute. Plus there is a little town nearby for $4 taxi ride - less than 10 min each way. It is crazy hot and there is no night life though. Sleepy town

I have been to Las Brisas in Huatulco too and really enjoyed it. There are more upscale resorts in Mexico, but the snorkeling at Las Brisas was great as it's on a bay (no big waves) and it didn't seem busy or crowded. We went in January, and it was 30-32 every day. Beautiful.

I agree with Kristy - Huatulco (pronounced wah-tool-co) is a beautiful spot. We stayed at the Dreams resort there and it was very relaxing. Aside from a few tours and ocean activities, there's nothing to do there but chill out! (which is usually what I want to do on vacation anyway!)

Hi Joyce - When my son was younger, we always went with the bigger chain hotels because they usually have the best kids programs & activities. Melia, Iberostar, Dreams, Bahia Principe, RIU are some of the bigger chains that seem to cater to families (and most have 5* properties in RivMaya). As a matter of preference, we try to book something between Puerto Morelas and Playa Del Carmen because the beaches are so nice along that stretch and you're not too far away from travelling back to Cancun (if the mood strikes!) - and I love the shopping in Playa Del Carmen! I've been to the Mayan twice (Catalonia Playa Maroma and H10 Ocean Turquesa), Puerto Vallarta once (private home) and to Huatulco once (Las Brisas) I agree with the previous posters, Las Brisas was my favourite hands down!

Been to Cancun, Acapulco and Puerto Valarta. I will always go back to PV, specifically Nuevo Vallarta. PV is safe, water is purified, beaches are nice, lots to see and do, places to go like Bucerias and Saulita for kids and parents. My daughter learned how to surf in Saulita. we have a time share that we have in several places in mexico and still prefer to go back to Nuevo Vallarta just outside PV.

My husband and I are Caboholics! Cabo San Lucas is a clean, safe wonderful place to vacation in Mexico with so much to do and see. west jet flies there from Calgary to San Jose Cabos in 4 hrs non-stop which makes going to Cabo even better! Out of all the places you listed above we have been...I would choose PV over any of them ...Love it there....friendly wonderful people, SAFE....my kids go clubbing and we have NO worries what so ever...Cancun is just like Cali....to Americanized ...not really Mexico anymore

Love the Mayan Riviera .... absolute breathtaking and it is a very affordable destination. I recommend the GR Solaris in cancun and Occidental Grand x Caret at playa del carmen . Stay away from Riu Lupita at playacar

Been to Cabo, Mayan Riviere and Cancun, the Mayan was my favorite, I love Playa del Carmen. So much to do and see, but any Mexican vacation is great and they have NO SNOW!

I went to Jose de Cabo a few years ago and it was okay for about the first 4 days. I got tired of the store gauntlet. They won't leave you alone. The problem with that whole area is that there is a strong under tow and swimming isn't such a good idea.

Love Riviera Maya and stayed at the Grand Sunset Princess!! Gorgeous place and great for the family!!!

Yes, only Medano Beach and Lovers Beach right in Cabo San Lucas are deemed safe to swim, other than a few sandy inlets along the way from San Jose to Cabo (like Santa Maria Beach-great snorkelling). Most of the beaches along the corridor between Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas (where all of the all-inclusive resorts are) have a huge undertow and big waves. Popular with surfers though! So if you want to do off beach swimming,staying on Medano Beach right downtown Cabo San Lucas is your best bet. Note: The hotels on Medano Beach are not all-inclusive although some offer a meal/drink plan for an extra fee. So if you book an all-inclusive vacation at Cabo, its going to be up the coast most likely with yet another non-swimmable beach, plan on taking taxi's to town for shopping, excursions, bar-hopping ect. We don't stay at all-inclusives on the Cabo corridor. We use our beautiful time-share suite at Cabo Villas Beach Resort & Spa which is right on Medano beach and steps to the marina and downtown. The choices there for excursions, activities, sunset cruises, dining and nightlife is outstanding and we love to sample the food & drinks at as many great places as we can. Glad we aren't tied to all-inclusives!
