Would You Recommend Airbnb Over Hotels in NYC?

Question:

Hi, I was wondering if anyone even used airbnb to stay anywhere in the States? (New York City for example). If yes, what opinions could you share about the experience? Would you recommend it over traditional accommodations such as hotels and B&Bs? Thanks

Stayed in an airbnb in NYC. Loved it. Way better for us than a hotel. 4 women, 1 bedroom apartment. 1 queen, 2 doubles, 1 sofa bed. Perfect.

In NYC you can find decent hotels for cheap..I stayed at the Holiday inn express in Hetald Square ( right across Macy!) For $100 per night and they have free wifi and breakfast! Can't beat that!

It was between 2nd and 3rd ave. on 12th St. Don't see the listing now. It might be one that rents when its vacant of long term rentals.

Used it many times in US (Sanibel Island, San Fran, Boston) and worldwide. Out of 10+ reservations we only had issues once (in Florence, Italy) - the pictures were from different place...

Have used it in Turkey, Vancouver, the Azores, and Kauai (in that order). 3 of the 4 were great experiences. In Turkey, the guy had a new girlfriend, and let's just say the walls were a bit thin. Hoping to write up a blog post soon with what I've learned from using it so far.

We used it in San Francisco, and stayed in one of the nicest, 2 floor condos I've ever seen for $200 per night. Would recommend over almost any hotel.

we just used it bangkok thailand, amazing! so after a month of travelling this was one of our oasis in thailand, what we really liked about it instead of a hotel, was that we were in a local neighbourhood, away from all the tourist, so we felt like we got the "real" experience.

p.s and once again since you are not dealing with a large company with written in stone policies, we loved that we took the night bus to bangkok arriving at 5am, and the owner let us check in.

Hostelworld is def the best for accommodations, anywhere, CC up front to book, cash deals on the other end. Stayed on the canals in Amsterdam in a cabin on a boat for $24.00 a night, huge breaky

Airbnb in the USA: The Ultimate Travel Hack or Too Risky?

As the sharing economy continues to grow, more and more travelers are turning to platforms like Airbnb for their accommodation needs. But what about using Airbnb in the United States, specifically in a bustling city like New York? Is it a viable option, or should you stick to traditional lodging like hotels and bed & breakfasts? Let's dive in and explore the pros and cons.

The Airbnb Experience in the USA

Yes, Airbnb is widely used across the United States, including in popular destinations like New York City. Many travelers have taken the plunge and opted for an Airbnb rental over a hotel room, and the experiences can vary widely.

On the positive side, Airbnb can offer a more authentic and local experience. You get to stay in a real home or apartment, often in neighborhoods off the beaten path. This can be a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture and get a taste of how locals live. Additionally, Airbnb rentals can be more spacious and budget-friendly than traditional hotels, especially for larger groups or families.

However, there are also potential downsides to using Airbnb in the US. Firstly, there's a higher degree of uncertainty and risk involved. Unlike hotels, there's no standardized quality control, and you're relying heavily on reviews and the host's descriptions. There have been instances of misrepresented properties, safety concerns, and even legal issues around short-term rentals in certain areas.

Weighing the Pros and Cons

When deciding whether to use Airbnb or stick to traditional accommodations in the USA, it's essential to weigh the pros and cons carefully. Here are some factors to consider:

  • Budget: Airbnb can be a more affordable option, especially for longer stays or larger groups.
  • Authenticity: If you're looking for a truly local experience, an Airbnb rental can provide a unique perspective.
  • Amenities: Hotels often offer more consistent amenities and services, while Airbnb rentals can vary significantly.
  • Safety: Hotels typically have more robust security measures and regulations in place.
  • Location: Airbnb can give you access to residential neighborhoods, while hotels are often concentrated in tourist areas.

Tips for a Successful Airbnb Stay in the USA

If you decide to go with Airbnb for your stay in the US, here are some tips to help ensure a positive experience:

  1. Read reviews thoroughly and pay attention to any red flags or recurring issues.
  2. Communicate clearly with your host before and during your stay to set expectations.
  3. Familiarize yourself with local laws and regulations regarding short-term rentals in the area.
  4. Purchase travel insurance or use a credit card with travel protection in case of any issues.
  5. Be a respectful guest and treat the property as you would your own home.

Ultimately, the decision to use Airbnb or stick to traditional accommodations in the USA comes down to personal preferences and priorities. Both options have their merits and drawbacks, so weigh them carefully and make an informed choice that aligns with your travel style and needs.
