Just got back from NYC last week. We stayed at the Doubletree by Hilton Times Square WEST. (350 west 40th street) Walking distance to Times Square, we went every night. Walked to 3 Broadway shows, took under 10 minutes. (Go see Come From Away-best show I have ever seen!) close to subway. Port Authority is across street from hotel, that has subway and bus. We also walked to Empire State Building, Shake Shack, Carlos bakery, Hard Rock Cafe, the Rock, New York public library, St Patrick's cathedral, radio city music hall and more places from there. Walking is the best way to get around. There are tons of subway stations on pretty much every block. The hotel has small rooms, but they are all small there. Free cookies and water at front desk. Bar on rooftop, restaurant in (we never went to it). Cute coffee shop/bakery next door with everything under $2. Also 2 Bros pizza next door with $3 for 2 pieces of pizza and a can of pop.

Where to Stay in Manhattan for Broadway Plays

If you're a theater enthusiast and planning a trip to New York City to catch some Broadway shows, choosing the right accommodation can make a big difference in your overall experience. Manhattan is the heart of the city's theater district, and staying close to or on a subway line that connects to the Broadway area can save you time and hassle.

Times Square Area

One of the most popular and convenient areas to stay in is around Times Square. This iconic location is within walking distance to many Broadway theaters, including the Ambassador Theatre, Minskoff Theatre, Gershwin Theatre, and more. Some great hotel options in this area include:

  • The Knickerbocker Hotel
  • Millennium Broadway Times Square
  • Marriott Marquis

Additionally, Times Square is served by several subway lines, including the N, Q, R, and W trains, making it easy to explore other parts of the city.

Midtown West

Midtown West is another excellent choice for those attending Broadway shows. This area is home to iconic theaters like the Gershwin Theatre (home of "Wicked"), Longacre Theatre, and Eugene O'Neill Theatre. Some recommended hotels in this area include:

  • Hilton Garden Inn Times Square Central
  • Courtyard by Marriott New York Manhattan/Times Square West
  • Hampton Inn Manhattan/Times Square Central

The Midtown West area is well-connected by subway lines like the C, E, N, Q, R, and W trains, providing easy access to the Broadway theater district.

Upper West Side

If you prefer a quieter and more residential area, the Upper West Side can be a great option. While not as close to the heart of the theater district, it's still easily accessible by subway. The 1, 2, and 3 trains can take you directly to Times Square and the Broadway area. Some excellent hotel choices in the Upper West Side include:

  • The Lucerne Hotel
  • Hotel Belleclaire
  • The Empire Hotel

The Upper West Side offers a more relaxed atmosphere while still being conveniently connected to the Broadway theater district.

No matter which area you choose, staying close to or on a subway line that connects to the Broadway area can make your theater-going experience more enjoyable and hassle-free.
