Question:

Has anyone traveled solo to Nicaragua before? I'm deciding between (Peru, and all the South American deals here) I've been to Costa Rica and Nicaragua before but never solo. Any advice would be appreciated!

I just went to Nicaragua yesterday for the day. Been staying in Costa Rica. Nicaragua is a very poor country, but I loved the islands in Lake Nicaragua. I only drove around them in a boat, but there's some new hotels and eco lodges there. It would be a very cool experience to stay there for a few days and maybe go to Granada for a few days as well.

I did the same thing, I went for a day but stayed in Costa Rica. I want to try somewhere new. But I'm a little nervous going to some of these places solo lol

Mackenzi I'm not sure what it's like to travel in Central America solo as a woman so take this with a grain of salt. That said, I have found if you keep your wits about you then you'll be fine. Stay in a hostel and/or try to meet some other people along the way and you'll be fine IMO.

I agree staying in hostels is always a good idea. It's easier to strike up conversation.
Not sure how much time l would spend on Managua as it appears to be pretty scary. I have been planning a solo trip to Granada for a while now. Am looking to go next Feb. Just follow the single woman traveling rules and you should be fine. I was told Mexico City was a bad place to travel solo. I loved it.

Yeah that's my worry, my plan is exactly that, but like I said I've never traveled there solo, so definitely want to be prepared. Google told me it's definitely a bad idea, but I want to know what real people think lol. Have you been to Peru?

I haven't been to Peru. I have been to Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil though. Argentina is amazing and felt safe and upscale/European. Uruguay is more off the beaten path like Nicaragua. Brazil is a total crapshoot.

I have been told it's fine to travel solo. Stay out of the dark alleys and go out in groups at night.

I'd travel solo in Nica before I'd ever dream of being in Peru solo! Nica has less theft and crime than Peru.

I recommend 4-5 days at Montys Beach lodge in jiquililo, and hotel de sonrisas in Granada. Both places have awesome hosts that will help make your stay memorable and very comfortable!

Are most of the accommodations offer a surfing lesson? I am looking to book my flight June 14-25.

I have travelled both and met lots of solo Travellers in both places. Look into Peru Hop in Peru it is a hop on hop off bus for backpackers that covers the Southern Peru and part of Bolivia it was really easy and fun. Lots of Solo travellers. If you like hiking and trekking I would give Peru a go.

I just spent 3 weeks solo there. It was awesome and easy to get around. It's the safest country in Latin America.

Thank you Andrea! Did you find you had lots to do for three weeks?

Profile picture of Andrea

Andrea

Absolutely! I landed in Managua, spent a night, got a bus to Leon for 3 days (lots to do...hike Telica for sunset or overnight camping! For sure!) Granada for 3-4 days. Visit Laguna de Apoyo. Spent a night or two at monkey hut or paradisio. Hit Ometepe (you can stay at Finca Mystica and go walk down the road to eat and use the amazing infinity pool at hotel Omaja). San Juan Del Sur or area. If you wanted to start north first, for hiking, do that from Managua. And if you have time, fly to the Corn islands. You can surf, hike, beach (go to the beaches away from San Juan Del Sur) like Maderas. You can catch cheap shuttles daily from the hostel downtown in San Juan. Or Popoyo for surfing. Visit las penitas just outside of Leon before going to Granada. You can volcano board. Haha so yes....lots to do. You won't have enough time if you enjoy being active

Solo Travel to Nicaragua: An Unforgettable Adventure

Traveling solo can be an exhilarating and transformative experience, and Nicaragua is an excellent destination for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure. Having visited Costa Rica and Nicaragua before, you've already had a taste of the region's natural beauty and vibrant culture. However, exploring Nicaragua on your own can offer a unique perspective and a deeper connection with the country's essence.

Why Choose Nicaragua?

Nicaragua is a hidden gem that often gets overshadowed by its more popular Central American neighbors. However, this charming country has much to offer the intrepid solo traveler. From pristine beaches and colonial cities to awe-inspiring volcanoes and lush rainforests, Nicaragua promises a diverse array of experiences.

Affordable and Safe

One of the biggest advantages of traveling to Nicaragua is its affordability. The cost of living is relatively low, making it an attractive destination for budget-conscious travelers. Additionally, despite its tumultuous past, Nicaragua is generally a safe country for solo travelers, especially when taking proper precautions.

Friendly Locals

Nicaraguans are renowned for their warm hospitality and welcoming nature. As a solo traveler, you'll have ample opportunities to interact with locals, learn about their culture, and forge meaningful connections. Their friendliness can make your solo journey feel less isolating and more enriching.

Tips for Solo Travel in Nicaragua

  1. Learn Spanish: While English is spoken in major tourist areas, learning basic Spanish phrases can go a long way in enhancing your experience and building rapport with locals.
  2. Stay Alert: As with any solo travel destination, it's essential to stay vigilant and exercise caution, especially when exploring unfamiliar areas. Avoid flaunting valuables and trust your instincts.
  3. Join Group Activities: Consider joining group tours or activities to meet fellow travelers and share experiences. This can be a great way to make new friends and potentially find travel companions for parts of your journey.
  4. Embrace the Adventure: Solo travel can be daunting, but it's also an opportunity to step out of your comfort zone, challenge yourself, and embrace the unexpected. Approach each day with an open mind and a sense of curiosity.

Unmissable Experiences in Nicaragua

  • Explore Colonial Cities: Granada and León are two colonial cities that offer a glimpse into Nicaragua's rich history and architecture. Wander through their colorful streets, admire historic churches, and soak in the vibrant local culture.
  • Hike Volcanoes: Nicaragua is home to numerous volcanoes, including the iconic Cerro Negro and the majestic Concepción and Maderas on Ometepe Island. Hiking these volcanic wonders offers breathtaking views and a chance to experience the country's natural wonders.
  • Relax on Beaches: From the laid-back surf town of San Juan del Sur to the idyllic Little Corn Island, Nicaragua boasts some of the most beautiful and uncrowded beaches in Central America. Soak up the sun, surf, or simply unwind in these tropical paradises.

While Peru and South America offer incredible travel opportunities, Nicaragua should not be overlooked. With its blend of natural beauty, rich culture, and friendly locals, solo travel in Nicaragua promises an unforgettable and transformative adventure. Embrace the challenge, immerse yourself in the local way of life, and let Nicaragua captivate you with its charms.
