Kari Byron bay is awesome its Australia's equivalent to tofino. I'd go up to Cairns too, daintree and mossman are cool. I'd skip surfers paradise all together, Sydney is beautiful too

Does anyone recommend cairns ?

Tracey

Kari big yes. We’re huge fans of Port Douglas. Just got back last week.

depends on how you want to travel and what interests you.
the West of Australia is outdoorsy, calm, amazing scenery and what I would consider more authentic Australia with kangaroos and koalas in the open not in a zoo, perfect for renting a camper van and driving your way around often being the only people on the road. Look up Cape Le grand national park. We drove Perth to Melbourne.
The east, especially Melbourne to cairns is the typical trail for younger travellers with lots of young people, parties, awesome sites and fun. Here you will get trendy bars, restaurants and see more iconic sites, all with tons of accommodations and easy travel routes. Sydney and Byron were my favourite. Brisbane and the Gold Coast Were my least fav.

Sydney, Coolangatta/Tweed Heads, then north to Noosa Heads on the sunshine coast then up to Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island on the Great Barrier Reef, then your out of time, spend Dec/Jan there last year Sydney then north for the best weather.

Kari

Rick how did you get from place to place? I am not very comfortable on the idea of driving

Profile picture of Lorraine

Lorraine

Rick I agree with this itinerary. Also a suggestion would be is if you go snorkeling, choose the fast boats. They’re a little more expensive but you won’t waste your time traveling to the dive spot.

Kari,I flew on Jerstar ,cheap airline, there's lots of Boats and public transportation also,I would spend a week in Sydney,a week on the sunshine coast and a week up in Airlie beach, huge country, first time I went I spent a year.

Every town is full of touristy things to do,they advertise right on the streets you can't miss them it the summer. I did a 3 day boat tour through the Great Barrier reef scuba diving and tenting on Islands. From Airlie beach.

Whitehaven Beach is exactly as amazing as it looks in photos and will ruin you for any other beach.
I spent 4-ish days in Cairns and loved it for the scuba diving, skydiving and whitewater rafting.

If you attempt to do ALL that has been suggested here, you will have what I call a ‘lick and a promise’ trip. Depending on where you land and depart, I’d suggest you confine yourself to that area.
You can certainly cover the east coast from Melbourne to cairns and much in between, but you won’t appreciate the true Australia. If you land in Melbourne, concentrate on the state of Victoria with maybe Canberra and the Snowy Mts .
And plan for a 3 month or longer trip to see all that’s been mentioned.

Kari

Geoff thank you I will keep that in mind
