Was there last August. Trains are great in Italy the route from Rome to Naples has the option to stop off in Florence its only a few hrs anyways. Naples is worth a couple of days looks like a dump at first around the train station but it's actually kind of cool old buildings loads of history people are great food is unbelievable home of pizza found great street food it's a seriously humid place even for locals . You can get express train that's air conditioned to Sorrento or regular commuter train which is busy and sweaty but cheap. Pompeii is on that route worth a full day go early it's very hot in August lot of walking to do no shade if you're sensitive to heat I was okay but I could see how people may struggle. Sorrento was a good base for Amalfi. Buses up and down the coast are cheaper but on the way back you can be waiting forever. The ferry was a bit more expensive but great way to see the coast and cool off with the breeze. Need a ferry to Capri. Capri had a nice ferry around the island but overall the town wasnt feeling it lot of expensive shops that cater for the rich. Amalfi town was cool so was Positano of all the towns were my two favourite. 5 days there was enough for me personally. Rome 3 days is rushed I'd have preferred more time my favourite part of Italy so much to see and do.

Niall thank you! Spending a month in Europe this summer. Starting and ending in Portugal (our FAVOURITE). Doing 4 days in Rome. I’ve booked a hotel but would love to know your recommendation. Train to Sorrento after that for 5 days. Doing ferry trips to Positano and Capri. Where did you stay in sorrento? Flying to Barcelona from Naples after that and ending with a week in the Algarve

Niall thx. We go to Lisbon every year, sometime 2x a year. My husband is dual Portuguese/Canadian! We’ve traveled most of the country if you’d ever like any ideas. Our youngest is getting married in a 17th century villa between Lisboa and Cascais this July

The train to Salerno might be a better option depending on where you’re staying on the coast.

I was there in August ; Took flight from Rome to Naples and then bus outside the airport to the Sorrento . A plenty of options are there in the town as per your budget and preferences. A day tour for Capri is a worth memorable experience . You can get fast boats from the Sorrento and they all are really visitor friendly . Staying in Positano is expensive so you can go there by bus or rent a car or bike . The whole coast is very beautiful and you can spend as many days as per your convenience. I spent 4 nights there and I guess it was enough . Good luck

We stayed at a bed at breakfast in Sorrento.Villa Oriana Relais. Very hospitable and breakfast was great. Sorrento boats offers private boat rentals with or without a guide.

Traveling to the Amalfi Coast with a Teenager

Planning a trip to the Amalfi Coast with your 17-year-old daughter can be an exciting and memorable experience. Here are some recommendations and advice to help you make the most of your 2-3 week stay:

Accommodation

Consider staying in a centrally located accommodation option in one of the main towns along the Amalfi Coast, such as Positano, Amalfi, or Ravello. This will give you easy access to the local attractions, beaches, and restaurants. Look for accommodations with a kitchenette or a fridge, as this will allow you to prepare some meals and save on dining expenses.

Getting Around

The Amalfi Coast is known for its winding roads and steep cliffs, making driving a bit challenging. Consider using public transportation, such as the local buses or ferries, to get around. This will allow you to sit back, relax, and enjoy the stunning coastal views without the stress of navigating the roads.

Activities

There are plenty of activities to keep you and your daughter entertained along the Amalfi Coast:

  • Beach days: Spend time relaxing on the beautiful beaches, such as Spiaggia Grande in Positano or Marina Grande in Amalfi.
  • Hiking: The Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei) is a scenic hiking trail that offers breathtaking views of the coast.
  • Boat tours: Take a boat tour to explore the coastal towns and the famous Emerald Grotto.
  • Cultural attractions: Visit historical sites like the Villa Rufolo in Ravello, the Duomo di Amalfi, and the ruins of Pompeii.
  • Shopping and dining: Explore the charming streets of the coastal towns, indulge in local cuisine, and shop for souvenirs.

Day Trips

While staying on the Amalfi Coast, consider taking day trips to nearby destinations like Capri, Sorrento, or Naples. This will allow you to experience more of the region and immerse yourselves in the local culture.

Tips

  • Pack comfortable walking shoes and lightweight, breathable clothing for the warm summer weather.
  • Learn a few Italian phrases to help you navigate and interact with locals.
  • Be prepared for crowds during peak season and book activities or restaurant reservations in advance.
  • Stay hydrated and carry sunscreen for protection against the strong Italian sun.

With proper planning and an open mind, your trip to the Amalfi Coast with your teenage daughter is sure to create lasting memories and strengthen your bond. Embrace the breathtaking scenery, delicious cuisine, and rich culture that this region has to offer.
