Derrick
Quick Google search says that is during cherry blossom season so I would try to see those for sure.
Lots of good food everywhere. I went to Tokyo and if you have kids at the age that would enjoy Disneyland then Disney Sea was a wonderful experience.
Kayla
I would definately check out the digital art museum by team labs. We spent hours in there, so much to see. Within walking distance of that is Divercity Tokyo Plaza with a giant Unicorn Gundam.
Jill
Kyoto is amazing, better than Tokyo - we used it as our Homebase and used JR Pass to go to Hiroshima and Nagoya and Osaka. It's about 4 hours from Tokyo on bullet train.
Kyoto - Fushimi Inari, castles, and Gion district for geishas, Nara is a quick trip for the infamous bowing deer
Hiroshima - Atomic bomb dome and peace memorial park, very cool shopping arcades, Itsukushima floating torii gate on Miyajima island is a short and free boat ride away
Osaka -Amazing aquarium, Lego Land, Universal Osaka
Tokyo - there a billion things to do here but I recommend Ueno Zoo, checking out Harajuku shopping area, Akihabara, Etc
Marlenne
Jill awesome thank you for your recommendations! I’m excited !
Alison
We are in Kyoto right now and it's spectacular. Not as hectic and overwhelming as Tokyo; full of nature, history and amazing food! Would recommend Gion and Fushimi-Inari as must-sees.
Alison
We are staying in the karasuma-oike district in the Grand Bach hotel. A little different - as it's just the 2 of us - but the area is fab. Close to train and a little bit quieter than some areas. Everything still 10 mins away.

What's the weather like Alison
Alison
Nettie it's mild and cloudy. I think we got up to 15 yesterday, today looks like rain.

Debating whether to pack my coat or not

Carmen
Team lab planets in tokyo! Conveyer belt sushi in tokyo! An arcade, like round one in Kyoto!
Gemma
Check out the robot restaurant in Tokyo. You will have no idea what you just experienced but you will enjoy it
Matthew
Do people just buy a ticket without a plan and then ask the internet to plan their trips these days? Lol
Marlenne
Matthew actually I plan based on reviews or experiences of travellers and things I research .. that’s in fact the main reason of this group, advice community.
Desraie
Matthew Disagree completely - if a seat sale is on for cheap, I'm not going to sit and waste time trying to figure out what I would do at there, I'm booking the ticket and working out the details later. Or if it's a place I want to go, why wait?
Vella
I am a planner so I don't go on any vacation without a plan/itinerary.
Pat
sounds as if many do!

We visited Japan for 3 weeks this past April. We absolutely loved our entire trip, we saw lots of cherry blossoms! Be prepared for large crowds because of the cherry blossom season but it’s definitely worth it. Don’t miss the Takayama Spring Festival, it’s amazing! If you want some ideas on places to see, I blogged our entire trip. You can take a look at: www.free2explore.ca
Enjoy! Japan is wonderful

We were also in Japan during the Cherry Blossoms. The timing also coincided with kids school break so it was extremely busy especially in Kyoto. So be prepared. I highly recommend getting a pocket wifi. You can get it at the airport. We would have been lost without it. As well, before you leave, install the Hyperdia App on your phone. Amazing app to provide route and timetable of the railway in Japan. We also purchased a JR Pass from the Nippon Travel here in Calgary. You don't have to but we just wanted the convenience of not having to buy a pass each time we ride the trains.
Marlenne
Vella thank you! Very good recommendations
Jen
A traditional bath house was interesting but I think you better check about kids. Definitely check out where they cook eggs in the mountain springs. Because of the sulphur they turn black!
Jen
In Tokyo there’s Gardens that are worth checking out.
Jen
We went on a train ride through the mountains. Heck if I can remember the name! Also black sesame ramen is delicious. Don’t be afraid to try Japanese curry!
Phoebe
Hey we are planning on going to japan in 2021. Just wondering if theres a point on waiting for a "deal" to fly to Japan. What's a good price to book around march/april?
Marlenne
Hi Phoebe! I got the deal that was posted in early November $500 round trip and available dates where lots from January to July if I’m not wrong, not sure if the deals come all the time around end of October
Marlenne

Marlenne
Phoebe there’s a deal going on now!

Also rent a pocket wifi - they are great - wifi wherever you go - there are quite a few companies that provide them - even deliver to your hotel upon your arrival - google pocket wifi Japan

Visiting Japan in April for 2 Weeks with Family
Japan is a stunning destination, offering a unique blend of rich culture, breathtaking landscapes, and modern marvels. April is an excellent time to visit, as it's the peak of the famous cherry blossom season. Here are some recommendations for a family of six visiting Japan for two weeks:
Where to Stay
Tokyo
: As the capital and one of the most vibrant cities in the world, Tokyo is a must-visit destination. Consider staying in areas like Shinjuku, Shibuya, or Asakusa, which offer a variety of accommodation options and easy access to major attractions.
Kyoto
: The cultural heart of Japan, Kyoto is home to numerous temples, shrines, and historic sites. Staying in the city center or around Gion, the famous geisha district, will allow you to fully immerse yourself in the traditional atmosphere.
Cities Worth Visiting
Tokyo
: Explore the bustling streets, visit the Imperial Palace, experience the neon-lit nightlife in Shinjuku, and indulge in the city's diverse culinary scene.
Kyoto
: Immerse yourself in the ancient beauty of temples like Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion), and Fushimi Inari-Taisha with its iconic orange torii gates.
Nara
: A day trip from Kyoto, Nara is known for its friendly deer roaming the city and the impressive Todai-ji Temple, home to the world's largest bronze Buddha statue.
Hiroshima
: Learn about the city's tragic history at the Peace Memorial Park and Museum, and explore the beautiful Miyajima Island with its famous floating torii gate.
What to Do
Cherry Blossom Viewing
: April is the peak season for cherry blossoms (sakura). Explore parks like Ueno Park in Tokyo, Maruyama Park in Kyoto, or take a hanami (cherry blossom viewing) picnic in designated areas.
Experience Traditional Culture
: Attend a tea ceremony, take a calligraphy or origami class, or watch a traditional kabuki or noh performance.
Visit Museums
: Tokyo has several world-class museums, including the Tokyo National Museum, the National Museum of Nature and Science, and the Ghibli Museum (for Studio Ghibli fans).
Food and Shopping
: Indulge in Japanese cuisine, from sushi and ramen to tempura and yakitori. Don't miss the vibrant shopping districts like Harajuku, Akihabara, and Shinsaibashi.
With careful planning and an open mind, your family will create unforgettable memories while exploring the rich tapestry of Japanese culture and natural beauty.
