Can I Travel to Mexico with a Passport Expiring Shortly After My Trip?
21
November
Question:
Humans say...
Tony
You are asking such important advice on line and willing to risk departure or reentry!
Norma
Tony not risking re-entry. Canada does not require its citizens to have a valid passport
Glynis
While that is true. It is the most common and the most accepted piece of identification, when returning from a foreign country as a Canadian citizen.
Edith
Norma Yes but the Airline may refuse to board you.
Glynis
Lindsay. While that is true to enter Mexico without your passport being valid for six months however, you could not re-enter Canada. If your passport expired during that time, you would have to get a special dispensation at that point.
All government-issued identification documents (Canadian or foreign) must be valid. They cannot be expired.
I see that your passport would expire eight days after your date of return however, what happens if something came up that you weren’t able to get back home on your return date and you had to stay there an extra 10 days or so could be a bit of a pickle
Theresa
You stand the risk of the air line not allowing you to go with your passport nearing expiration. I’d hit up the passport office and rush one. Why risk it?
Stacey
Theresa I agree, especially in the winter, delays and cancellations are a reality.
Jan
Theresa agree, this is the type of risk not worth taking! Remember Murphy’s law
Shelley
Not good. Need 6 months minimum
Amanda
Shelley Campbell no need for 6 months coming home
Shelley
Amanda Marie they would not let me fly with 6 months. Had to get new one before my 2.week holiday
Amanda
Shelley Campbell yes, but she can certainly get back into her own country as long as it is not fully expired. You can't enter or be in most other countries but you can return to your own.
Chris
Similar to Canada and the U.S., Mexico is one of the 42 countries where a Canadian passport technically just needs to be valid for the duration of your stay. That being said, it is a risk that you will run into someone along the way who isn't familiar with specific country entry rules. Such as an airline or perhaps misinformed employee that chooses not to enforce the country regulations shown in Timatic (the database that airlines around the world use to verify travel documents) and just wants to see '> 6 months' (which covers all countries).

I wouldn’t risk it, go to the south office and renew I’ve heard is not a long wait there. My friend got her passport in 5 days without a travel date and no rush so no reason why you can’t do it.
Lindsay
Margarit oh that timeline is great to know. Thank you.
Deb
Lindsay, my husband went to the Calgary office this morning and we’ll have ours by Jan 6. Could have got “urgent” if our trip was sooner.
Carol-An
Deb I lost my passport on Friday and had to cancel and order a new one yesterday. I will have it Jan. 6 without putting a rush on it or paying extra. Why take the chance? Delays are quite possible this time of year.
Chelsie
Just get a new one . It takes like 2 weeks or rush for an extra 20$
Jan
It’s a question of how great the risk is that you are willing to take. There is some risk for certain
Sheldon
What happens if the plane is
re-routed and needs to land in US? The question is why would you take the chance?
Glynis
Sheldon good point indeed
Chris
Similar to Canada and Mexico, the U.S. is one of the 42 countries where a Canadian passport technically just needs to be valid for the duration of your stay (Canada is one of the countries with an exemption for U.S. entry). That being said, it is a risk that you will run into someone along the way who isn't familiar with this rule.

Zoria Not always but the Airline could demand it.

Deborah
If she is a Canadian citizen she won’t be in trouble entering Canada.
Michelle
Deborah good to know!
Sean
Go for it what could go wrong. SMH
.
Marilyn
I wouldn’t risk it
Coral
I was in Florida last year with only 20 days till my Canadian passport expired. No problems
Edward
Just got back from the Dominican. Others at my resort were delayed by a bomb threat and the plane turned around over the gulf of Mexico and landed in the Carolinas. FBI, state police, and a whole lot more. Just a heads up that your flight might not be as direct as you're expecting. Enjoy your holiday!
Deb
Lindsay, I’d highly suggest you get a rush passport. You can even go to the office in Calgary this afternoon and have it before your trip.
Anything can happen. Illness, injury, flight cancellations. I would not leave with such a tight window of my passport being valid.
Do it for peace of mind.
Vicki
They won’t let you board the plane here.

Message me i work for the airline and i can help u with ur enquiries

We are in Mexico right now on vacations and it it’s confirmed that they need 6 months validity

Donna
When we arrived at airport with my husband's passport valid for the trip but not the 6 month, stewardes was going to refuse us, but her manager said, let them fly and put the onus on Mexico to send them back. Mexico had no issue and we had a great holiday.
Andrews
Look at weather what happen if flights are cancelled or you have travel through the states they will not allow you in
Beverly
Andrews unless the cancellations take over a week OP would still be fine.
https://help.cbp.gov/s/article/Article-619?language=en_US
Lindsay
Beverly thank you, this is what I’ve seen and I was there in November with no issues. I was looking for someone with a personal experience that was denied. Since this is so close. Wasn’t sure if maybe someone could have a bad day and not let you go.
Andrews
Beverlywe travel every month all over world it isn't a game I play with passport. Each country is different and laws mexico is very unstable with the law.
Beverly
Andrews you specifically said the states, my comment is only referring to the states.
Alli
No way I would risk it. Heaven forbid there be something that delays returning.
Millie
We just flew to Mexico. Mexico no longer requires the paper FMM form for immigration. They have gone paperless. Nevertheless, american airlines still handed out the paper FMMs. Just pointing out that, even though you technically may not need six months on your passport, there definitely could be some airline employees who wouldn’t let you board. Why risk it?
Ignatius
If your passport renewal is urgent due to travel they can complete it within 1-3 days what’s the big deal of renewing it.. what if you miss your flight because of them Mexican cocktails and have to rebook through another route
have fun!
Ken
And praying you don't get ill? My father did in the states and I was stranded there for 3 weeks (hadn't realised mine ran out during that extension) while it was all sorted out (at considerable expense).
Lisa
Pay the extra money to.get.your passport picked up the next day. It's worth ut!
Wendy
Just remember Covid. Is it worth the money and the worry if you can’t come home for some reason ?
Iva
Don’t risk it. My daughter got her passport in two weeks just recently.
Jackie
Do not mess with Mexican law. No matter what you have heard. Period!
Glynis
Lindsay, at the end of the day I would really be interested to hear how you make out. Merry Christmas and have a great vacation. PS I’m sure ultimately, you’ll probably be just fine.
Jennifer
You are a Canadian citizen they can not deny you
Jessica
Jennifer but the airline can refuse to board.
Risky move.

So common sense would be to renew your passport unless you never plan on travelling again.
A.I. says...
Passport Validity for Travel to Mexico
If you're planning a trip to Mexico and have a question about the validity of your passport, you've come to the right place. Many countries require that your passport be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay, but Mexico has a different policy.
Mexico's Passport Validity Requirements
According to the Mexican government's official guidelines, your passport only needs to be valid for the duration of your stay in Mexico. This means that if your passport expires after your intended departure date from Mexico, you should be allowed entry without any issues.
In your specific case, if your passport expires on January 23, 2023, and your trip to Mexico is from January 12-15, 2023, you should be able to travel without any problems as long as your passport is valid during those dates.
Personal Experiences
Many travelers have shared their experiences regarding passport validity for travel to Mexico, and most reports align with the official guidelines. Several people have successfully entered Mexico with passports that were set to expire shortly after their trip.
However, it's important to note that entry requirements can sometimes vary based on the discretion of the immigration officer you encounter. While the official policy allows for passports to be valid only during the trip, some officers may still request additional validity as a precaution.
Recommendations
If your passport is set to expire soon after your trip to Mexico, it's always a good idea to renew it well in advance of your travel dates. This will not only ensure a smooth entry into Mexico but also provide you with a valid passport for any future travel plans.
Additionally, it's recommended to carry a printed copy of the Mexican government's passport validity guidelines, just in case you need to reference them during your entry process.
Overall, while personal experiences and the official guidelines suggest that your passport should be valid for your upcoming trip to Mexico, it's always better to err on the side of caution and renew your passport if possible.

I had a quick question. I know that Mexico does not enforce a passport needing to be valid for 6 months. I am due to head there January 12-15. My passport expires Jan 23/2023. From what I’ve read, as long as it’s valid for the duration of my trip I’m good. But does anyone have any experience with this??
