Call about a rush passport

Where do you live? You may be able to get a rush passport

Go to your nearest passport office in person. Bring your flight info and photos for your new passport. Do a renewal application. Request same day service for your passport. Surrey and Vancouver offices only.

You could call and try to get a special authorization.

Profile picture of Krista

Krista

How do you do that

Profile picture of Élån

Élån

Just get yourself to the passport office to be sure. They can help, maybe a temporary passport will be issued. It's only been expired 2 months plus you have Nexus.

Do you have the retina scan on your nexus?

Profile picture of Krista

Krista

Yes

Profile picture of Karli

Karli

If you used your passport as a secondary piece of ID when applying for your Nexus, I'm almost positive your passport needs to be valid in order to use your nexus... At least that's what my husband was told when he got into shit for having an expired passport and crossing the boarder

Profile picture of Patty

Patty

This is correct. Your Nexus card is not valid unless linked to a valid passport.

Profile picture of Karli

Karli

He was told they could have revoked his Nexus as well because of this, but they were nice and let him off! They are real sticklers with the fine print.. Which makes sense lol

Profile picture of Élån

Élån

Patty, Nexus is valid still if she didn't use passport as ID to get Nexus.

Profile picture of Élån

Élån

This says Passport, or Nexus.
As long as you didn't get your Nexus using passport.

Profile picture of Krista

Krista

What is unclear about that though is when you use your Nexus card at the kiosk I'm pretty sure you have to scan of valid passport too there?

Profile picture of Hillary

Hillary

Your Nexus is invalid if your passport is expired.

Profile picture of Élån

Élån

If you used ID other than passport to get Nexus it'll be fine.

Profile picture of Hillary

Hillary

Elan Ambrose but don't you need a passport to get a Nexus card? What other citizenship documents would be valid?

Profile picture of Élån

Élån

I thought I posted the list from Nexus site. I'll find it again later for you, if you don't first.

Profile picture of Brandi

Brandi

if you are travelling between canada and the usa then your nexus is good enough . They don't ask you for your passport as well....

Profile picture of Krista

Krista

Is that with the agent or at a kiosk?

Profile picture of Brandi

Brandi

when I have travelled I only use my nexus either at the kiosk or an agent, as well as the United States Customs and Immigration.

Profile picture of Krista

Krista

Brandi such a risk I will take!

Profile picture of Brandi

Brandi

if you are that nervous then I would be getting to a passport office and applying for a rush passport ... I know they have 1 day service for extra fee... when you check in online is there not an option to add your nexus number instead of your passport ? Your nexus card gets you through the security faster as well as the customs line faster and never do you have to show your passport as well.....

Profile picture of Élån

Élån

Krista, Did you use your passport to get Nexus? If you did, it's not valid if expired passport. If you used other ID to get it, Nexus will work.

Profile picture of Terri

Terri

We had forgotten to update the Nexus site with our new passport numbers and they made us go in the office at YVR.

Profile picture of Krista

Krista

I am fine to go to the passport office, but can they renew me today? I tried calling but still on hold

Profile picture of Heidi

Heidi

just go.. with your passport and your flight info. You have to be there to get a rush passport done anyhow, so you might as well head down there

The airports you're flying out of and into MUST be able to accept Nexus or you cannot fly without a passport. I ran into this problem 2 years ago and I couldn't get a passport in time as I realized it was this on a friday night and the ridiculous charge wasn't worth it. So I changed my tickets and flew out of YVR instead and didn't have any issues.

Profile picture of Krista

Krista

Yes yvr. I'm getting mixed reviews, most people say I should be OK..... but it does seem to be a risk. I'm travelling with my two young children who are under the age of four and they have passports and Nexus as well.

Profile picture of Cathy

Cathy

What about where you're going to? Is it a nexus approved airport?

Profile picture of Lillian

Lillian

Krista Are you travelling by yourself with your kid? If so, you may need a letter from the children's father to travel with the children without him.

Profile picture of Krista

Krista

Update, I was able to call the customs line at Vancouver airport and explain my situation and they said it's no problem, the officer may ask about my expired passport and I just have to explain my situation and I would be OK , So here is hoping, thank you very much everyone for all your help

Profile picture of Cathy

Cathy

I brought my expired passport with me too just in case but never had any issues. You will be fine. But it absolutely puts you in panic mode realising it's expired.

Profile picture of Élån

Élån

Krista, did you use your passport for ID when you applied for Nexus?

Get a Rush passport.

Profile picture of Janine

We flew Calgary to New Orleans via Houston a few years ago with Nexus only. No problem on the way down at all, but when we went to fly back it was a bit trickier since the kiosks wanted us to scan our passports which we didn't have. It all worked out so you should be fine, but I always bring both now.

I have travelled to US using nexus only no problems..

What all these people are failing to mention with nexus/global entry is that it must have a valid passport behind it.
Yes I have gone down with only nexus, but my passport that links to my nexus card was still valid.
Hopefully you ignored half the advice here and followed the other half that suggested going down to the physical passport office to get a rush passport

Good point, forgot about that!

Yet, I mentioned it multiple times lol

Anyway...

And when you get a new passport you must go back to the nexus office and have the new paraprofessional and its number linked to the nexus. That also holds true for the credit card you have attached tot the nexus card. If you have a new CC - you must go and have the new card linked to the nexus. They have the right to refuse you entry using your nexus if the numbers are not up to date.

Profile picture of Terri

Terri

You can do all that on the GOES website yourself without going in. So much more convenient!

Profile picture of Paula

Paula

Thanks for that info - I will check it out! When my hubby got a new CC - he was told by the border guard he had to go the the Nexus office to change the info.

Profile picture of Danielle

Danielle

I don't know if you can still do it, but you used to be able to go to a large centre and pay a lot of money to get a passport in a day. I know in BC we could get them in Vancouver. Look at the website and see if you can still do it and if you can get to the nearest large city.

Profile picture of Bruce

Bruce

If you used your passport as Id for your nexus application then the nexus expired when the passport did. Or at least that is what the agent told me at the border when the same situation occurred with me. But that was the only time I had ever been asked for my passport while using my nexus card. Just random.

Profile picture of Krista

Krista

Will see what happens I guess! When I called YVR today and transfered to customs international he basically said not to worry and just explain my situation to the agent if they ask and I'll be ok - hope that's the case as I'll have my family with me. Renewing as soon as I get back!!

I was almost denied entry in Las Vegas with my Nexus card as their Global Entry machines were not up and running. I had to go to a supervisor and then into 3 different rooms where I was eventually let through after being lectured by everyone. To fly with just Nexus you need to be flying to a place that is set up to receive it. Good luck, I hope you don't get held up!

You do not need your Canadian passport to travel to the United States if you have a NEXUS card, assuming you aren't a dual citizen. I am, and even though the NEXUS card was designed specifically so Canadians and Americans can travel to each others' countries without a passport, the NEXUS card only states your citizenship is one country, and since I was born in the US, it says my citizenship is American, which means I have no proof of my status in Canada. It's idiotic. My wife, who is a Canadian citizen ONLY travels back and forth to the US with just her NEXUS card all the time. You'll be fine.

Nexus rules say you must always have your passport with you.

Profile picture of Élån

Élån

Passport can be expired though.

Profile picture of Karli

Karli

If you used your passport as secondary ID during your Nexus application, therefore having to keep that information up to date on your Nexus records, then your passport cannot be expired when using Nexus. My husband almost lost his Nexus while crossing the boarder and his passport was expired. If you did not use your passport as your secondary piece or alternative proof of citizenship on your Nexus application, then sure it can be expired as it is not linked to your Nexus

I had my retina scanned at the airport and that lets you travel by air with just a Nexus card using one of their booths. My passport has been expired all year but nobody said anything to me *shrugs*

My husbands passport was expired at least 6 months, and had been travelling to the states numerous though the boarder crossing, before anyone bothered saying anything to him lol
