Question:

Hi Everyone! My husband and I have booked flights to Japan and Bali in August. We are flying into Tokyo, staying there a few night, going to Kyoto and Osaka. We fly out of Osaka to Bali.
We haven't booked accommodations yet and are hoping you can provide us with any input on places to stay. My husband is a sushi fanatic, and I love Ramen! Any recommendations for places to eat would be greatly appreciated as well.
Thank you!!

You can easily find something upon arrival. It's always nice to eyeball a place before committing. Avoid Kuta! I suggest starting in Ubud.

there is a good ramen stall by the tsukiji market on the outside. It's standing room only. Only one type of ramen and not good customer service. But, it's very tasty.

I fell in love with Japan. We just got back from Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. We stayed at The Royal Park Shiodome in Tokyo and Kyoto Century Hotel in Kyoto. Both hotels were amazing and had helped us book restaurants as far as 10 months back and answered my questions via email on the daily. It was a foodie trip. We did 10 Michelin starred restaurants which included sushi, French, and traditional Japanese kaiseki. Having eaten at both cheap and world-class sushi shops in Japan, I must say omakase at sushiyas are by far the best sushi in this world. If you don't care for that, there are tons of mid level sushi shops in Tokyo that are still good, like Bentomi and Yamazaki in Tsujiki or Kyubey in Ginza. Please note, for well known restaurants, they do no accept reservations from foreigners or first timers. We also had Matsusaka beef, which is higher than Kobe, Kobe beef, Yamagata, and Ohmi. It was amazing, but not cheap. Ramen is amazing and an Ichiran experience is a must for ramen enthusiast. We also did Michelin ramen shops in Sugamo. Check out the amazing Michelin guided okonomiyaki in Osaka name Ajinoya, It's near Dontoburi. In Kyoto, Michelin guided Sushitaka was great without breaking the bank and my favourite meals there has to be the tonkatsu at Katsukura in Kyoto Station (so good) and our 2 starred Michelin kaiseki meal at Roan Kikunoi. There are tons of beautiful temples and gardens in Kyoto, but also tons of tourists. Take your time and take it all in. Japan is one of my favourite places, ever. Feel free to inbox me for anything. I'm a food and travel blogger.

Also, Puri Gangga outside is great. The food is amazing, it's close to the rice terraces and there is free yoga and shuttles to Ubud, walks through the local village and right beside a beautiful temple.

In Ubud we stayed at the Kommeneka Tanggayuda (stay in their suite, outdoor shower, private pool outside of your suite and overlooks the mountainside). In Seminyak we stayed at the Ulin villas and spa. Each place had afternoon tea at 3pm (included in your hotel stay) and breakfast included as well. If you need a reco for a driver that can pick you up and drive you around, shoot me a PM - the driver we used was recommended to us by others and he was fantastic. Oh make sure you go to babi guling for authentic cheap food!

If you want some beach time, there's ku de ta beach club and potato head Bali beach club. Get a cabana and chill out all day in the sun.

One last thing, make sure you go to Jimbaran bay for dinner on the beach and go to the uluwatu temple and watch the show they have at sunset. It's incredible

When we were in Tokyo we stayed at Kimi ryokan. If you want to sleep on futon, in a Tatami room for a reasonable price, check it out!

Bali - if you stay near the airport the first few days before going to Ubud, i suggest you stay in Seminyak area (even the drivers told us Kuta is more rowdy and it's well known as a partying area- if you're not into that scene, Seminyak is a better option; Seminyak beach is also very nice! less people when i went around November/december)
Sushi - go to Tsukiji Fish market; bunch of sushi places. Sushi there is a bit pricey but I kid you not, it is worth every penny!
Ramen - since you're in Tokyo, i would recommend Hajime in the Harajuku district. I found it randomly on my first trip to Tokyo (you have to walk down steep stairs) and loved it. Went there again the 2nd time i went to Tokyo. Their BBQ 'chashyu' is yumm. You order from a machine and give your ticket to the guy (he/she may ask what size - S/M/L; same price); TRY ZAKU ZAKU on Takeshita street. the dessert is awesome and the line looks long but it's pretty fast.

Osaka - like another user mentioned, you need to try the okonomiyaki
Kyoto - temples galore; Also if you're interested in possibly spotting a real Geisha or Maiko (geisha-in-training) go to Gion. They'll be in the full make-up and keep to themselves and walk fast-paced too or they'll be in Taxis (apparently that's how you spot a real one)
**if you have some time in Kyoto, maybe try visiting Nara for their free-roaming deer. Once you get those crackers, they'll swarm you with their wet noses

I didn't pre-book anything in Bali and had no problems finding gorgeous accommodations with pools! If time permits take a boat to any of the Gili Islands and stay in a coconut hut on the beach for ~$20/night and enjoy the freshest seafood and laid back atmosphere. Also Any restaurant in Ubud is amazing, try for accommodations close to monkey forest Rd. And go see the fire dance in Ubud!
