Aero Mexico flies direct to Mexico City.... i'm headed there at the end of the month.
Neill
Catherin - looking on kayak, it appears that the direct flight is not daily currently? Glad to see that there are some direct flights coming back after westjet dropped it last fall
Catherin
Neill ahhh yea the direct flight may not be daily. Still can get there daily from YYC on Aero Mexico, which I would recommend over getting myself to YVR and then getting a flight from there.
Neill
Found it! Thank you!

There's a few ways from Mexico City (DF) to San Miguel. You can take the Primera Plus bus from the airport but it only goes to Quereterro. If you want to see the old aquaducts and the city of Quereterro then that would be an option but I personally favor San Miguel much more.
The best way is to taxi it from the airport to Terminal Central de Autobuses del Norte. They have the Primera Plus and ETN bus lines there that have direct routes to San Miguel. They often have many departures throughout the day and availability if it's not a holiday or busy weekend. If one departure is full for one of the bus lines or if you just missed the departure time try to check the other line to see if they have one available sooner (you can go back and forth btwn the Primera Plus and ETN lines to find the most suitable for you and all daily departure times are posted on huge boards by their kiosks).
Remember to keep a close eye on your luggage/back pack and personal belongings at the terminal at all times. If you end up having to wait there are chairs but they are hard plastic ones so not the comfiest.
Also remember to bring small peso coins as the public bathrooms at the bus terminals are all usually 10-20 pesos to use and there is an attendant charging and handing out toilet paper. Sometimes they even have turnstiles gates! Don't only bring 500-1000 peso bills as vendors will not often give you small change even if you buy something.
Watch your belongings as well on the buses. Your luggage goes in the storage under the bus so it's quite secure but if you fall asleep on your bus ride make sure you know where your personal bag is at all times. I've done the bus routes from DF all over Mexico by myself and feel the buses and terminals are quite safe. The buses are also comfortable and affordable.

Thank you for this information-very helpful

Kathy no problem, depending on which month you're thinking of going Morelia which is about a 2.5 hour bus ride from SMD is amazing when the monarchs are there. Xilitla in SLP is also magical to see surrealist art and wonderment of Las Posas in the middle of the jungle although the town itself is small with not much to do but has a few decent hotels (5 hour bus ride from SMD) and I definitely agree with Marie that Guanajuato City is beautiful with lots to see and do and worth it to do a two day trip (1.5 hour bus from SMD). Have a great trip Kathy!

Marie Amaro. Any suggestions?

Kathryn pretty much what Janice said above. Flights are very cheap, direct and quite frequent with aeromexico starting at the beginning of June. Take the bus from Mexico City to San Miguel de Allende direct or to Guanajuato and then on to San Miguel de Allende.
A day or 2 in Guanajuato would be worth it as it is gorgeous and isn't as full of tourists as San Miguel de Allende. Also, soooo many other amazing old colonial cities in central Mexico! I spent 2 months in Zacatecas and thought it was fantastic.
Just stay off the highways at night (unless in one of the big buses such as ETN). There has been a recent surge in violence, but it's isolated to other small towns and cities in the state.

Marie Amaro Thank you
Marie
Kathy no problem! Let me know if you need anything while in Mexico City.

Kathy - there is a FB group On the Road in Mexico that is also very helpful, although the info posted above is spot-on. We have traveled on the buses as well, and they are a very efficient way to move around - just bring a sweater, as many of them run the AC at beyond a full-on cold setting
Kathy
Thanks

There are direct flights to Mexico City, aeromexico but they seem to be seasonal. If you don’t want to drive use kayak to see what flights are available or the executive buses are cheap and very comfortable, again just search executive buses in mexico

Travelling From Calgary to San Miguel De Allende
San Miguel de Allende is a charming colonial city in central Mexico, known for its vibrant culture, stunning architecture, and rich history. If you're planning a trip from Calgary to this beautiful destination, here are some suggestions on the easiest route and transportation options.
Flight Options
Direct flights from Calgary to Mexico City are limited and often involve multiple stops or layovers, making the journey quite complicated. To simplify your travel, consider flying to Vancouver first and then catching a direct flight to Mexico City from there.
Several airlines, including Air Canada and WestJet, offer direct flights from Vancouver to Mexico City, which typically take around 5 hours. This route can be more convenient and potentially cheaper than trying to find a direct flight from Calgary.
Getting from Mexico City to San Miguel De Allende
Once you arrive in Mexico City, there are a few options to reach San Miguel de Allende, which is approximately 170 miles (274 km) away:
Bus
Taking a bus from Mexico City to San Miguel de Allende is a popular and cost-effective option. Several bus companies, such as ETN, Primera Plus, and Omnibus de México, operate regular services between the two cities.
The bus journey typically takes around 3.5 to 4 hours, depending on traffic conditions. The buses are generally comfortable, with reclining seats and air conditioning. Some companies offer luxury services with additional amenities like Wi-Fi and refreshments.
Bus terminals in Mexico City, like Terminal de Autobuses del Norte, provide direct connections to San Miguel de Allende. It's advisable to book your bus tickets in advance, especially during peak travel seasons.
Private Transfer or Rental Car
If you prefer a more private and direct mode of transportation, you can arrange for a private transfer or rent a car from Mexico City. This option offers more flexibility and convenience, but it will be more expensive than taking the bus.
Private transfers can be booked through travel agencies or online platforms, and they will provide a driver who will pick you up from the airport or your accommodation in Mexico City and take you directly to San Miguel de Allende.
Renting a car allows you to explore the region at your own pace and make stops along the way. However, be aware of potential language barriers and unfamiliar driving conditions in Mexico.
Regardless of your chosen mode of transportation, San Miguel de Allende is a captivating destination that promises to enchant you with its rich culture, colonial charm, and warm hospitality.
