We are planning on travelling to San Miguel De Allende from Calgary. Looking for suggestions on easiest route / way to get there. Looks like flights from Calgary to Mexico City are abit complicated, so considering flights from Vancouver. Also, how is bus experience from Mexico City to San Miguel?

Aero Mexico flies direct to Mexico City.... i'm headed there at the end of the month.

Neill ahhh yea the direct flight may not be daily. Still can get there daily from YYC on Aero Mexico, which I would recommend over getting myself to YVR and then getting a flight from there.

There's a few ways from Mexico City (DF) to San Miguel. You can take the Primera Plus bus from the airport but it only goes to Quereterro. If you want to see the old aquaducts and the city of Quereterro then that would be an option but I personally favor San Miguel much more.
The best way is to taxi it from the airport to Terminal Central de Autobuses del Norte. They have the Primera Plus and ETN bus lines there that have direct routes to San Miguel. They often have many departures throughout the day and availability if it's not a holiday or busy weekend. If one departure is full for one of the bus lines or if you just missed the departure time try to check the other line to see if they have one available sooner (you can go back and forth btwn the Primera Plus and ETN lines to find the most suitable for you and all daily departure times are posted on huge boards by their kiosks).
Remember to keep a close eye on your luggage/back pack and personal belongings at the terminal at all times. If you end up having to wait there are chairs but they are hard plastic ones so not the comfiest.
Also remember to bring small peso coins as the public bathrooms at the bus terminals are all usually 10-20 pesos to use and there is an attendant charging and handing out toilet paper. Sometimes they even have turnstiles gates! Don't only bring 500-1000 peso bills as vendors will not often give you small change even if you buy something.
Watch your belongings as well on the buses. Your luggage goes in the storage under the bus so it's quite secure but if you fall asleep on your bus ride make sure you know where your personal bag is at all times. I've done the bus routes from DF all over Mexico by myself and feel the buses and terminals are quite safe. The buses are also comfortable and affordable.

Kathy no problem, depending on which month you're thinking of going Morelia which is about a 2.5 hour bus ride from SMD is amazing when the monarchs are there. Xilitla in SLP is also magical to see surrealist art and wonderment of Las Posas in the middle of the jungle although the town itself is small with not much to do but has a few decent hotels (5 hour bus ride from SMD) and I definitely agree with Marie that Guanajuato City is beautiful with lots to see and do and worth it to do a two day trip (1.5 hour bus from SMD). Kathryn pretty much what Janice said above. Flights are very cheap, direct and quite frequent with aeromexico starting at the beginning of June. Take the bus from Mexico City to San Miguel de Allende direct or to Guanajuato and then on to San Miguel de Allende.
A day or 2 in Guanajuato would be worth it as it is gorgeous and isn't as full of tourists as San Miguel de Allende. Also, soooo many other amazing old colonial cities in central Mexico! I spent 2 months in Zacatecas and thought it was fantastic.
Just stay off the highways at night (unless in one of the big buses such as ETN). There has been a recent surge in violence, but it's isolated to other small towns and cities in the state.

Kathy - there is a FB group On the Road in Mexico that is also very helpful, although the info posted above is spot-on. We have traveled on the buses as well, and they are a very efficient way to move around - just bring a sweater, as many of them run the AC at beyond a full-on cold setting

There are direct flights to Mexico City, aeromexico but they seem to be seasonal. If you don’t want to drive use kayak to see what flights are available or the executive buses are cheap and very comfortable, again just search executive buses in mexico
