I have never tried using atm in mexico but i have from other countries. the charges are crazy. So I would bring cash or exchange it at the bank rather than using ATM.

When I was in Mexico City five months ago, the exchange rate at the airport was better than here in Canada.

We do both. It’s nice to have some on hand when you arrive for cab fare or what not.

You can use USD as well.

I go to calforex in Chinook or downtown location and exchange money. I wouldn't use US$$ as exchange rate is poor. Pesos are accepted everywhere.

Def atm there

I found the exchange rate to be better at a Mexican bank atm rather than an atm in a resort! Airport exchange in Mexico was also better than some exchange rates here !

Take enough pesos to get you started then use the ATMs.

Mexico City int airport offers way better exchange rate than any Canadian bank! Cancun, I'm not sure.

Pesos enough for bus, tour stuff on side roads, shops. Many Mexican restaurants take credit cards.
I'd say take 60$ Can in pesos...atm for more.
Really depends on how much you eat at the all inclusive hotel.

We exchange some before we go, so that we have some pesos. It is easy to get money out of ATM's. Go to a bank like Scotiabank or Baconomer, etc. though, instead of a small ATM somewhere. It is cheaper and way more secure. You don't need to go into the branch, just the ATM at the bank

Take American $ and change it at resort

Consider getting a tangerine debit card - this is what it offers “And, if you love to travel, Scotiabank's membership in the Global ATM Alliance also means you'll pay no surcharges or access fees when you withdraw cash from over 50,000 cash machines in over 40 countries worldwide. Surcharges and/or convenience fees will be applied on ABM withdrawals made at non-participating financial institutions. “. Best exchange rates too

Just take Can$, no need to convert to US$ and then to Mex pesos. You will be paying an exchange rate premium twice. Mexican banks can exchange Can$ just as easily as US$. If you are a Scotiabank or tangerine customer, take your client card and use it at the Scotiabank ATM, and you will pay no transaction fees other than the exchange rate. Check before you go to see if there is a Scotiabank ATM near where you are staying.

Go to calforex in Chinook Mall to buy your pesos. Their rates are usually better than the banks here. the ATM's in Mexico give you the daily rate for pesos as well. Don't take Canadian as no one takes or wants it there.

Should You Exchange CAD to Pesos Before Traveling to Mexico?

Are you planning a trip to the beautiful country of Mexico? One of the most common questions travelers have is whether it's better to exchange their Canadian dollars (CAD) to Mexican pesos before leaving or simply withdraw cash from ATMs once they arrive. Let's explore the pros and cons of each option to help you make an informed decision.

Exchanging CAD to Pesos Before Your Trip

Pros:

  • Convenience: Having pesos on hand when you arrive in Mexico can be convenient, especially for things like paying for transportation from the airport or tipping porters.
  • Potential Better Exchange Rates: In some cases, banks or currency exchange services in Canada may offer slightly better exchange rates than those you'll find in Mexico.

Cons:

  • Higher Fees: Banks and currency exchange services often charge higher fees for converting cash, which can add up, especially for larger amounts.
  • Limited Flexibility: If you exchange too much cash and don't spend it all, you'll need to convert the remaining pesos back to CAD when you return, potentially incurring additional fees.

Using ATMs in Mexico

Pros:

  • Better Exchange Rates: Generally, you'll get more favorable exchange rates when withdrawing cash from ATMs in Mexico compared to exchanging cash beforehand.
  • Flexibility: You can withdraw cash as needed, reducing the risk of carrying large amounts of cash and allowing you to adjust your spending as you go.
  • Fewer Fees: While ATM fees do apply, they are often lower than the fees charged by currency exchange services or banks for cash conversions.

Cons:

  • ATM Availability: While ATMs are widely available in major cities and tourist areas, they may be harder to find in more remote locations.
  • Foreign Transaction Fees: Some banks charge foreign transaction fees when using their cards abroad, which can add up if you make frequent withdrawals.

Conclusion

For most travelers, using ATMs in Mexico to withdraw pesos is often the more cost-effective and flexible option. However, it's always a good idea to have a small amount of pesos on hand when you arrive for immediate expenses. Consider exchanging a small amount of CAD to pesos before your trip and plan to use ATMs for additional cash needs once you're in Mexico.

Regardless of your choice, remember to notify your bank about your travel plans to avoid potential issues with your debit or credit cards, and always be mindful of your surroundings when using ATMs for safety reasons.
