Splitting Time Between the Andaman and Surat Thani Islands: A Good Idea?

Question:

Profile picture of Simmi

Thailand question: Trying to decide if we should spend more time on the Andaman sea islands (i.e. krabi, koh phi phi, koh lanta, koh lipe, koh jum) or split our time between this side and the surat thani islands (i.e. koh samui, koh phagnan, and koh tao). We don't plan to go to the full moon party. Looking for nice beaches, relaxing, hiking, snorkeling! We have about 8 nights. Thanks in advance!

based on what you're looking for, I'd go Andaman.

My understanding is it depends on what time of year you're going. I'm going in November/December and all my research says that the Andaman/Krabi is better at that time of year and the Gulf of Thailand/Koh Samui side is still rainy.

Stay on the andaman sea side. In my opinion the beaches and weather are nicer.

Holiday Inn Resort in Phi Phi is amazing but so Is Koh Samui. It’s such a short plane ride I’d say do both!!

We really enjoyed Koh Tao. Went to all 3 of the eastern gulf islands and that was our favourite. Stayed at Sairee Beach Cottages...great location and amenities.

Koh phi phi tends to be party central but is lovely. Just read the accommodation literature carefully for what they promote.

From my experience the west has the best beaches and clearest oceans... And would depend when you’re travelling, I am currently in Phuket, and it is very stormy

Good point! We stuck to the East because it was monsoon season in the Western islands (August).

West coast is best for snorkelling. Krabi is a cool place, stayed in the South, lovely beaches, good prices. Spent 30 days in Chang Mai, Pi etc was great but the last 2 weeks in Koh Lanta were Awesome. 8 days split. Lots of tours from Krabi to the islands also.

Thailand: Andaman Sea vs. Surat Thani Islands

Trying to decide if you should spend more time on the Andaman Sea islands (i.e. Krabi, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, Koh Lipe, Koh Jum) or split your time between this side and the Surat Thani islands (i.e. Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao)? We don't plan to go to the full moon party. Looking for nice beaches, relaxing, hiking, snorkeling! We have about 8 nights. Thanks in advance!

Andaman Sea Islands

The Andaman Sea islands are known for their stunning limestone cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and white-sand beaches. Some of the most popular islands include Krabi, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, Koh Lipe, and Koh Jum.

Krabi is a great starting point for exploring the Andaman Sea islands. There are several boat tours that depart from Krabi, and you can also rent a kayak or longtail boat to explore the islands on your own.

Koh Phi Phi is one of the most popular islands in the Andaman Sea. It's known for its beautiful beaches, clear waters, and lively nightlife. However, Koh Phi Phi can be crowded, especially during the high season.

Koh Lanta is a quieter island than Koh Phi Phi. It's a great place to relax on the beach, go snorkeling or diving, or hike in the jungle.

Koh Lipe is a small island located near the border with Malaysia. It's known for its pristine beaches and laid-back atmosphere.

Koh Jum is another small island that's great for relaxing and getting away from the crowds.

Surat Thani Islands

The Surat Thani islands are located in the Gulf of Thailand. They're known for their tropical beaches, lush jungles, and laid-back atmosphere. Some of the most popular islands include Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao.

Koh Samui is the largest and most developed of the Surat Thani islands. It's a great place to relax on the beach, go shopping, or explore the island's many temples and waterfalls.

Koh Phangan is known for its full moon parties. However, there's more to Koh Phangan than just partying. The island has some beautiful beaches, lush jungles, and waterfalls.

Koh Tao is a small island that's popular with scuba divers and snorkelers. The island has some of the best diving and snorkeling spots in Thailand.

Which islands are right for you?

If you're looking for stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and limestone cliffs, then the Andaman Sea islands are a great choice. If you're looking for a more relaxed and laid-back atmosphere, then the Surat Thani islands are a better option.

Ultimately, the best way to decide which islands are right for you is to consider your interests and budget.
