Seeking advice on choosing the right airline for a week-long visit to Singapore on a budget.

Question:

Hi, I have friends I can stay with in Singapore. I am considering the end of February for a week visit. There seems to be significant price differences in fights. Any advice about airlines would be much appreciated. I’m an easy going traveler, trying to fly on a modest budget. However, if it’s worth going with a particular airline, I’d be open to hearing what you have to say.

We enjoyed EVA via Taipei. Korean and Cathay are also great. The Chinese airlines are very cheap but unreliable and don’t have great safety records.

Alex I appreciate the information!

I’ve flown china eastern and had 4 really good flight segments. Limited anecdotal evidence, I know, but I wouldn’t hesitate to fly them again. Even had an amazing time on an 8 hour layover in Shanghai and went to the fabric market, got dumplings, and some other cool stuff.

Just took this flight on AC this summer. Routes through Hong Kong are severely prone to disruption given the protests. We were fortunate as flights were grounded before and after the day we passed through.

I didn’t like AC as much. The seats are better for tall people though. I’m short and find I fit into Nippon (ANA) seats better. AC food was pretty blah too.

Compare the price to Bangkok. Bangkok to Singapore flights are cheap.

Haven't checked recently, but Singapore Air use to offer some great freebies and deals for exploring the tiny country. The night Safari at the Zoo is beyond awesome

Barb Yes, their stopover package is a great deal! But, you need to be on a layover (transiting to another location - not a return flight) and in and outbound flights need to be with SA or their affiliates like Silk.

Second EVA. Arrives in SIN mid-day rather than at midnight. Aisle seat H is the way to go for comfort in economy.

I second ANA. When there’s a deal I think you can get it below $800. I prefer ANA rather than Cathay because the flight to the stopover is shorter. I think it’s 8-9 hrs to Haneda instead of 12-13 hrs to HK. Then another 8-9 hrs to Singapore. I cannot stand that long in the air. And also the Haneda airport is awesome! The drawback is the stopover is 6 hrs (which might be too long) but you can use the time to travel ard the city for a while. It’s workable.

Friecca I also did Ana to Singapore... Returning froM BANGKOK $604 Can. Layover Tokyo use their Lounge... Connecting flight to SIN.. 5+ hours

I’m from Vancouver island, but I’m living in Singapore currently. We like Nippon (ANA). Super service, very polite, good food (Japanese), very good with food allergies. My mom just got $850 rtn flights via Tokyo with them.
singapore airlines has a new direct flight from Seattle to Singapore. They’re considered the best airline in the world.
Many people are avoiding China and Hong Kong for layovers right now.
Play with your dates generally 6-10 wks before your travel date is the prices. Also longer stays tend to be cheaper 3-4 wks.

I am from the island too, we are looking at vancouver to bangkok, what s ANA? I have found flights on China air and EVA air?

Profile picture of Becky

Becky

Rhonda you will likely see it as “Nippon” when booking. Their acronym is ANA which you will likely see in the airports.

Becky can you recommend a reasonable hotel for one night stay as we are just flying in and out the next evening?

I like EVA better than ANA but that's just me. As ntransit, I also prefer Taoyuan to the older Haneda. Both are good. ANA has cheaper prices most of the time than EVA (who's low season is prob Jan - Mar). I don't usually book CX for long haul (ie past 7h) - food looks like it's out of a can, and hasn't changed for years.

can one get out of the airport at Haneda (luggage booked to destination) for a few hours?
I wanted to meet a friend and the AC flight attendant said I would have to check my baggage out and in again!
Does EVA fly from Toronto

I had a 6 hour layover in Haneda — both segments with ANA, from 6pm to midnight. I went into Tokyo for 4 hours and had no problems. Immigration lines were very quick. My one recommendation is to get out Japanese yen in Canada because the rates at the airport are expensive and credit cards are not super widely accepted. (Example: you have to pay cash for transit from the airport)

My hubby and I travelled with Eastern China 4 times in the last 8 months between $600-650 and we have not had any major set backs. Food is not great but for the price , that was not our priority. If your schedule is flexible, Playing with dates can get your ticket as cheap as $550. Of course it depends on the season. I use Trip.com to book our Asian flights. Good luck !

Flying to Singapore on a Budget: Tips for Smart Travelers

Singapore, the vibrant city-state in Southeast Asia, is a popular destination for travelers from all around the world. With its blend of modern skyscrapers, rich cultural heritage, and delectable cuisine, it's no wonder you're considering a visit. The end of February can be an ideal time to explore Singapore, as the weather is generally pleasant, and it's just after the peak tourist season.

Airline Price Differences

When it comes to booking flights to Singapore, you've rightly observed that there can be significant price differences among airlines. This is primarily due to various factors, such as airline alliances, route networks, and pricing strategies. However, being an easy-going traveler on a modest budget, there are a few tips that can help you score a reasonably priced flight.

1. Be Flexible with Travel Dates

If your travel dates are flexible, try searching for flights a few days before or after your desired travel window. Airline prices can fluctuate based on demand, and even a slight adjustment in your travel dates can sometimes yield significant savings.

2. Consider Budget Airlines

Budget airlines, such as Scoot (part of the Singapore Airlines group), AirAsia, and Jetstar, are known for offering competitive rates on flights to Singapore. While they may have fewer amenities than full-service carriers, they can be an excellent option for cost-conscious travelers. Just be mindful of any additional fees for checked baggage or in-flight meals.

3. Explore Airline Alliances

Major airlines often form alliances, such as Star Alliance, Oneworld, and SkyTeam, which can provide access to a broader network of routes and potential discounts. If you're a frequent flyer with a particular airline, check if they have any alliance partners offering competitive rates to Singapore.

4. Book Early or Snag Last-Minute Deals

Booking your flights well in advance can sometimes yield better prices, as airlines release discounted fares early to fill seats. However, if you're flexible and willing to take a chance, keep an eye out for last-minute deals, as airlines may offer discounted fares to fill unsold seats closer to the travel date.

Considering Airline Quality

While budget is a priority, it's also worth considering the airline's quality and reputation, especially for longer flights. Singapore Airlines, for instance, is renowned for its exceptional service and amenities, making it a popular choice for many travelers. If the price difference is reasonable, it might be worth splurging a bit for a more comfortable journey.

Ultimately, the choice of airline will depend on your personal preferences and priorities. By being flexible, exploring various options, and considering both price and quality, you'll be well on your way to finding the perfect flight to Singapore that fits your modest budget and travel style.
